  1. The number crunching is sort of irrelevant when we get things like double the normal rainfall in a month. I wonder if they dont just number crunch the stats and think flooding only affects X percent of the population and cant justify the spending for so few. Either way its not an option to leave things as they are. Dont the insurers opt out of flood damage claims in flood hot spots ? Bob
  2. The slewing on the 650 is really strong, the slew rams are about 4" in diameter. We have a timber trailer that goes behind the mog and thats got a Botex crane on it. Plenty of reach but sadly lacking in lift but then you can have it both ways, something with loads of reach and lift would probably be too heavy. You cant see the push out on the 650 because its retracted but it goes out to about 6mts. The mog ended up with a pto driven pump on the back to operate the crane, that livened it up a bit Bob
  3. I use a top seat 650 Hiab on our trailer and it serves us well. As said above they are slow and are a bit short on reach but for what we do its not a problem. Its got enough grunt to lift a 3` diameter oak stick 20` long which is ideal for what we do. Brick grabs give more reach and are normally a lot cheaper but they dont fold up.The upside of the 650 is it will handle a monster of a grab ,ours opens up to 8`, the trailer runs a donkey engine for the hydraulics. There is a stream that runs through my place ,the EA used to send 4 guys down here every year with cutters and hand tools to clear all vegetation / debris etc. Its nearly a mile long and it was my responsibility to gather up and dispose of the arising. I have not seen them in 20 years now so I just do it with a 360. Some knob stopped me a while ago and told me I was destroying the natural habitat.What could be worse for the banks habitat flooding or me on a machine once a year? Bob
  8. These guys that head these departments are running with their shoe laces tied together . The red tape and B@llS@@t mountains soak up most of the funds for these works , the paperwork involved in getting the most basic projects of the ground is mind numbing. If and when the governments ,councils and other works departments cut this utter nonsense we may see value for money structured services return. Until then most of the funding for any work on ditches, rivers and roads will be used up by paper pushers. Bob

  10. I have had a good read up on this and an "expert" has come up with this. To the OP: If your engine has a DPF then do not add 2-stroke oil as it will foul it up. ULSD (Both Euro and US) is additized with lubricity enhancers to make up for the lubricity components which were removed along with the sulphur. Currently the max wear scar rating on US ULSD is 520um and Euro ULSD is ~460um(IIRC). Lower is better. Diesel common rail manufacturers add coatings to the internals of their HPFP pumps when they're going to be fitted to vehicles which use diesel that has a little lower lubricity. US for example. As for additives there is a plethora of products out there, but IMO nothing works better than biodiesel @ 2% (B2) for lubricity. It's just enough to be more than adequate and not so much that it'll cause problems if it's not up to par in terms of quality. So its plain old cooking oil at the rate of 200:1 , now do we go for Mezola or Crisp and dry @ £1.50 ish a ltr Bob
  11. January of last year was the change over point for derv. Until then Ag diesel was old school, it was changed over to low sulphur on that date to meet modern tractors common rail inj requirements. The only difference now in red to road derv is the colour and whatever Shell/BP or whoever like to blend in with it. Cetane is diesels equivelant of Octane and i know different suppliers play with the content of that, also a few other burn clean bits and pieces go in there. Old school pumps will benefit from a tad of oil but quantities and grades are a contentious issue. Ordinary engine oil is ok to use but would need a thorough mixing prior to going in the tank, two stroke seems to be an expensive and unnecessary addition. Bob

  13. Our old Nuffield winch tractor goes places our 4x4 tractors and Mogs cant get through. Many occasions its had to drive through where they are stuck up to the belly plates and winch them out. I think its more to do with the fact they weigh nothing and are sat on a relatively large footprint. Bob

  15. We have a weighbridge just across the road so I think i will take the transit over there empty and again when loaded just to see if we are running the thing overweight. Will let you know how it fares up. Bob
  16. Tack this onto the end of this thread if you like. This snotty load of poplar will be going on the weighbridge tomorrow. Its not tearing the tyres off the rims like it does with oak and beech and is only about 2/3rds loaded because of the silly way it was cut. I wonder ???????????????????   20. Ugly load of poplar that a mate of mine chopped up in 5`6" lengths for a customer that wanted all he could bring. One transit load later she said that was all she wanted.   21. Our H&S policy states we must have at least one qualified first aider on site at all times and the first aid kits are numbered to support the amount of workers they are effective for. ie a five man kit, in our case it must also include the eyebath and large wound dressing. Bob
  22. I dont know what make our grab is but its brilliant. We added the paddle`s to the arms and shoved some extra forks on and its really universal. Its happy picking up massive sticks as well as brash. Bob

  25. Rolson have these chains in their warehouse near reading for about £12 +vat but there is a minimum spend when you go there. The ebay ones are more expensive because of the p+p weight. Beware there are two different weight chains on the market, we use the heavier 3/8 chain and not the 5/16 one. The shorteners come off in seconds, they are only held on with a clevis pin and split pin. I have chopped them up in different lengths for loads of different jobs.
