  1. promises promises, soon be spring.
  2. we went down the route of the 2.4m posch splitter, you can get guides to bridge between the channel and the splitting blade for short logs, we tend to split the bigger rings on this 25"+ split into 4 and then finish them on a vertical. theres a video from about 7 years ago when we were experimenting with it.
  3. just the first year at 100 tons you will soon put a value on your labour, it's not just 4k for the timber and then there's the machinery cost new saws, ppe for the family splitter, tractor. presumably you have basic learning of the saw but what about the other machinery not that I'm a fan of hse but I have seen people do some stupid things. I didn't mean buying seasoned timber from a merchant but getting one on hire to process it for you as several people on here seem to hire themselves out. their experience should get it done far quicker than your going to manage on a weekend, or at least getting the bulk of it done with a bit left to play with. I might have missed size of timber your going to cut I see talk of 24" bars I would call that mid level and a big saw would be once your over the 30", we use 15" and 18" for 60% of what we cut 24" for about 35% and 36" and 48" only if there's no other options. it can be fun to wield a monster bar for a half dozen cuts then you want to go small again.
  4. if the daily express is right last week, we have a winter coming to rival 1947 where we had snowdrifts here 18 - 20ft deep, ill be happy with just a long frost get me out of this mud.
  5. but if the gulf stream was to change and the flow from the north atlantic drift changed we would also have colder winters.
  6. 100 ton a year + the equipment + the education time to learn all the mistakes you can make, would it not be better to do a few more hours at the day job and buy your fuel from a merchant. gotta be cheaper for someone to come on site with equipment and you can get your exercise from stacking the pile they create.
  7. we get the same thing and after you explain to them about weights and volumes, moisture contents etc they still go and buy from the cheapest load they can find, quite satisfying when they call you up 2 weeks later because those logs don't burn. I do think half the stupid calls we get are other merchants trying to be sneaky fishing for information instead of just saying im joe bloggs from down the road, we are not holding nuclear secrets we would still answer their questions.
  8. made a deal with euroforest about 6 weeks ago for all the hardwood on one of their clearfells due to start soon, drove past the site today all felled and cleared without a stick appearing in our yard. also discovered 2 new merchants in the area yesterday, think that's 5 new firewood merchants this year alone within 20 miles of us, all chasing the same timber 2 estates and 3 farms.
  9. your price doesn't seem expensive to me, I wholesale £65 + vat for 3/4 cube if you take 100 bags, otherwise £70.80 + vat or £94 retail. £120 for a cube bag.
  10. we have done the same thing 1m extensions to lift the height, 3ft mesh around the base extra wide openings so no doors unless custom made, hang some old tarps just to keep the worst of the rain out. beech which in march you could literally watch the water running out the end of the timber is now measuring 18%.
  11. 1 trade customer
  12. 75m3 on order yesterday. still waiting for some frost we are still hovering around 12 degrees daytime.
  13. paper ad just run out and won't be renewed, about to turn google ad words to £0, post a bit on facebook and twitter, word of mouth seems to be the only thing still working.
  14. same here it's price before quality. I delivered a bag to a customer on Friday, hes been buying off me for 3 years but every year he still buys a load of green timber because it's cheap. tried pointing out to him it's the same quantity at the same price as my own stuff it just comes in a tipper and is 10 to 15% more in mc.
  15. so are you saying all meters are wrong and the only way to give a moisture reading is to put it in an oven? I use 2 meters a £10 aldi and a £400 delmhorst and I show the customers the readings using 2 meters to me is verification, theres generally a 2% difference between the 2 meters. If you think the advert is false I would say go ahead and report, the firewood industry is becoming so bad because nobody wants to report anything and the amount of people on here admitting they work for cash or beer money without fear of reprisals is quite amazing. we are very reluctant to take cash payments and I'd say 99% of our customers now pay bank transfer and the rest are cheques, we get maybe 3 or 4 people a year who don't pay within a couple of days, also saves us arguing with traffic wardens when were trying to pay in at the bank.
  16. monofilament and close knit from s g baker
  17. I tested some of mine in august and was getting 9%-13% now they are back up to 18-21%
  18. absolutely agree.
  19. you can't build a business basing it on free wood you have to price based on buying it on so you can offer continuity of supply or your screwed imo.
  20. it doesnt help every man and his dog think they can start up a log business on the side for a bit of cash & the public like nothing more than a bargain, so they will always try the cheap loads even though deep down they have a pretty good idea they will get garbage,it seems they just cant resist trying it.
  21. you didn't say the size of bag your using 0.6m3, 0.75m3, 1m3 as mentioned above with 0.75m3 hardwood mine weigh in 220kg to 290kg depending on species etc. you could put 1 bag in and take it to your local weigh bridge
  22. looked like we were almost getting going then died a death again. just done my BSL return 97m3 for the quarter.
  23. last quote I had for a pallet into the highlands was £180. just sent one to Guernsey was £236.
  24. I would cut it to 8" lengths throw into a bag and leave it or next week have a little bonfire
  25. drawback with crane on the flatbed is reduced capacity we can only get 680kg payload on the truck but then if you put it on a trailer your limited to tacho hours.
