I haven't bought a new blade in years, I use a cheap diamond needle file to sharpen ours when needed, its quite an easy job to follow the original grinding angles, cheers Dave

I was kind of wondering the same but more about the soil and all the bugs that live in it, for some farmers it must be heart breaking, it could have taken years to build up the soil fertility and then bang, thats it, all dead, or am i missing something, Dave

Been folowing this thread with interest and i think the lowest price was £900, from what i have seen most of the gears etc should be off the peg items but the cutting heads would have the be farmed out to a metal fabricator. The length of log is determined by the diameter of the cutting heads and ALL gears will have to be keyed or splined onto their shafts to keep them in sequince, the trailing blade looks like it does the final chop then flicks the log out of the machine, Dave NE ex clockmaker

I am not in the trade, just a happy wood burner. I watched a vid on youtube recently where a bloke has worked in the woods for most of his working life, he stated that he cuts his logs etc into 36 inch lengths, when he gets home he then cuts them into 9 inch lengths so each one yeilds 4 pieces. I have a Dunsley 5 and it can take a 12 inch log but smaller is better, i would rather have shorter lengths than have the hassle of finding long logs which have to be carted around and then re sized to fit, Dave

I have been making some for home use, i use an old biscuit tin on a home made rocket stove, i use Indian red wood in the tin and pallet wood to cook the tin. I am in a residential area so have to keep the smoke down but it is far better quality than shop bought, Dave NE
