  1. its a tp150 in a ifor williams trailer. i bought it with no running gear, was on back of a hilux. loads of space for fuel, rakes, signs, etc. now its in a trailer.
  2. hi jon never tried the customer service so dont know. wouldn't surprise me though. never taken it to a main dealer, too expensive. they are more expensive to buy than other 4x4s, maybe for a good reason, they are good. but i think other cheaper 4x4s can do a similar job in chip/log moving. you are right they all need looking after, most get a hard day!! Cheers.
  3. not personally, but the guy who i work with has a 90. loves it but spends more time fixing things than me. they are good at what they do though and look nice!! much better gvw and train weight than other pick ups i believe. also as mentioned hold their value very well. you would still have to wrestle me out of my rusty hilux though...
  4. buy a hilux and put a tipper on the back. all the time you save not being under the land rover or under the bonnet, can be spent doing other things!! i bought a 97 single cab 4x4 hilux in 2001. its done 225,000. it got to 200,000 on the original clutch!! dont know much about the newer ones. it carries the weight well as it had air ride fitted! plug in a compressor and watch the back rise to a normal looking level. will get it fitted to a new truck when the sad time comes. get a 4x4 though, the closer you get to the trees the better, fields, parks, lawns etc. makes some jobs possible. plus you can tip logs or chip in muddy conditions, you get to have fun in the snow to. good luck
  5. is that mistletoe?? dont think i would park under that.
  6. dont think i can offer advice:confused1:, only admire:thumbup1:. great looking signs, top job!!
  7. my old man was in the army most of his working life. he still says that he recons politicians should don full kit and go out on patrol, in the heat/cold with them, just once. share the fear/excitement. might make them less trigger happy in the future!! put this photo on general tree pics the other day, we do work for the commonwealth war graves commission. morning mist. i would be proud if my sons went into the forces. how i would feel if they went to war?? hope never to find out.
  8. i disagree. ive used a good rope and just put wraps round the truck if too heavy. nothing broken, so far...less links in the chain, loads of suitable knots to use. there seems to be too many gadgets now. any thoughts??
  9. i am not religious but that's what i thought. you can just make out the military headstones on the right. always forget my camera and have a crap phone! remembered it that morning.
  10. pine take down in the sun:001_smile: morning mist with felled cypress
  11. Hi, Just wondered if anyone knew of a loler inspector in or around Reading? Also any good log splitters to hire in the same area? Thanks.
  12. Hi Tim, I would say go for it. There seems to be a lot of negative feelings about tree work. No one says you will be rich, be dry and cool or its easy work. Trees are heavy! Ive been doing it since 95 and still enjoy it. set up business with a friend in 2001. Been flat out at time and been quiet at times, same as any business. Grab as much training and tickets off the government as you can, you have earnt it the hard way to and deserve it!! Where in oxfordshire are you? Get climbing as soon as you can!! Find a climber who will give you a bit of time. Climb, even for fun at the weekends. stay safe and good luck.

    softwood?

thanks everyone, i know people around me sell softwood logs as i see them advertised. Dont know if i will be able to sell it as very new to logs, but tempted to bring the timber home and split. Other than the extra diesel of pulling it all home, i should get 20 ton for free. At least if i am left with a load of logs i have not spent too much!! Should i mix with other softwoods or have just pine loads? Thanks again
  15. You could always ring your local tree surgeons and ask them. Remember it will almost certainly be green and make sure you know what it is. You dont want sweet chestnut on an open fire or be told its oak when its willow . It might be easier with smaller loads though. i give away some logs if it makes the job quicker, just take a full load home at the end!

    softwood?

    Thanks, good idea.
  19. Just wondered if there was a good market for softwood? Doing logs for the first time as to wet to climb and have wood coming in. Have got a contract to fell 10 big Scots pine. Will come down in rings. Would normally leave on site but wondered,as going home everyday anyway, would it be worth logging and selling? Do people only want hardwood? Thoughts and advice appreciated. What price could i expect from a pick up load (mine is 1.3 m3) Thanks
  20. thanks i am sure they will!! going to get a moisture reading thing just to see what works and what does not think what gensetsteve says about getting the right species will help thanks for your replys splitters?
  21. Hi everybody, new to this firewood business and have a few questions. i would like to process about 25 tones of bought timber and my arb waste. outside storage is no problem but limited shed/barn storage. should i cut the arb waste into logs and stack in shed ,then cut the timber into billets and stack outside with tarp or ply on top? would a little petrol splitter (7 ton handy etc) cope with splitting 1m lengths or will i need a bigger one? if stored correctly will logs split now be ready for this winter? I live at the top of a hill so its always bloody windy. hats of to you lot!! having done some simple sums, its not an easy way to make ends meet. still at least we are outside playing with wood and toys:thumbup: thanks for your time.
