  1. hi all, i split about 8 m3 of holm oak and stacked with a few inches between each row at the beginning of last year under a small well vented shed. was green when split. at some point the rows fell and lent against one another rather than fell in a big heap. now i have got to them there is blue mold on the cut edge. they burn ok but i want to start selling logs in the future and they don't look good. i know its stupid but from what i gather on the forum people want clean looking logs?! is air flow the only key to keeping it down? can i really split green wood into a vented bag? thanks.
  2. sounds good, spent ages before flicking the rope back when fork is far from the climber. might look into them. top job again, lowering bits like that with all those fruiting bodies is always fun. well done to your team.
  3. good job, well done. bet that lump rocked the boat!! silly question but is all that rigging at the bottom a lowering device? we just put a wrap around the trunk a few times. do they work well? take long to set up. i always figured less links was safer.i.e. just a good lowering rope and fork in the tree. not too old to change though, might be worth a go.
  4. if its not rotten in the middle a wood turner might want cubes or lumps?? or sick it on a big bonfire!! there must be some interesting grain in there.
  5. I have had a tree officer send me a photo of a tree, with a red semi-circle around the canopy saying they want it to look like this!!?? I would like to think they make life harder for people who do poor work, rather than a contractor who's work is known to have the trees interest in mind as well. We have all heard stories of felling being done on a Sunday in a sensitive site. Or ring barking loads of trees. If I don't do it, someone will blah blah... Maybe the council should keep lists of good contractors and bad, rather than rely on the arb association. Didn't mean any offence in previous post mate, just fed up with seeing hat stands as trees in towns. The customer has no idea about trees, its left to whoever is quoting to go through the best remedy, for them and the tree.
  6. If its too big for it position, long term i think it would be better to fell and replant with a more suitable species. i would not want that at the bottom of my garden in 5 years. i take trees down, when needed, for payment not fun!! i dont hold up a table tennis bat to get a shape. that, all be it my opinion looks bloody awful, more like a large rose bush than an ash. would look better in log shed
  7. never seen more than 2 before on anything. nice bit of wood kentjames, are they common? ive been working with trees for 20 years?!
  8. why not thin and lift it? might be better for the tree and look more natural what is it?! Lime? Like the anchor point in the middle, left for who ever comes to fell it in a few years!!
  9. use a steel strop when its a stick, use you main line underneath as a back up and to get saw down etc. dont think it would stop a 44 or 66 but good for flicking round and ivy!! always good to have a route to the ground with a rope. tell him to have a go with no spikes. personal choice, lot less pegs with spikes.

hi everyone, can i split green logs into vented bags or will the middle not season? thanks.
  14. :thumbdown:me to. 2 new handles and cant tune the bloody thing. worst saw ive ever bought. if and when my old 20s die i am off to the dark side. my clutch springs are ok, maybe because i use my old one more as its better. dont try chasing a back cut with one, it takes 5 seconds to start going!!
  15. :thumbup1:new carb kit all the way. 200t is a great saw, havent used a husky top handle for 15 years or so. sure they are better now though. my 201t is crap. only had it 1 yr and can not tune it, 2 new handles and gutless. fixing all my old 20s!! back to question find an old 200t or try a new husky. you get what you pay for in the end... good luck.
  16. thanks everyone looks like some time with the axe then!! a gap between the lines of logs seems a good idea, most times ive tried that they all fall over in a big pile anyway, like bloody dominos! thanks again.
  17. hi everyone, seems lots of advice but would be grateful of some input. whats the best way to store fresh cut logs? stack in a line or throw in a pile? pile sounds easier but mold? from what i have read vented bags are only good for already seasoned logs, is that true. its mostly beech and about 10 tons. would it be better to season in cord and rings? then pile it up in shed when split (its arb waste) thanks.
  18. looks great, could you pm me details, thanks:thumbup1:
