  1. You say you are doing a big reduction by taking 10' off. How big are they then? I can show you lots of pics of anything up to 70' top off a 90' tree that survived and flourished. That is a big reduction 10' off a 15' tree is a big reduction I guess. They will be fine
  2. Worst case scenario is that they might survive.
  3. And what do you want it to do? Take the chill off a modest, well insulated modern house or be the sole heat source in a 12 bed mansion?
  4. This is mine. Stove is a biscuit tin with the fire in it, coffee pot on top. I've got a Kelly as well but prefer this. If I did summat different it would be a billy can that stores inside the stove. You say such and such a stove is quicker, this takes just long enough to give me time to sort my cup out
  5. I've got snow tyres on the back of mine, that made a big difference. I'm using mine to cart my apples to the farmyard from the orchards, over 20 tons so far and hasn't spun the wheels once yet, never mind get stuck. Usually towing an Ifor Williams trailer too.
  6. I have had a few Cabstars over the last 20 years or so. One thing about them is they are particularly crap on anything slippy. I do have to point out that I am a farmer and expect to go down the fields in them, not really what they were designed for. I have not had one with an LSD but often wondered if the diff out of a Terrano would be a good idea. Do the newer models come with an LSD option then?
  7. This little bit of oak isn't having the best of times.
  8. Got iTunes? You got a U2 album. Here's how to delete it. - BBC Newsbeat
  9. Ooh what a horrible thought! Not them, they are all present and correct. They don't smell much better but they are noisy enough to know they are alive. I think one might have bad teeth, or he has been eating some of whatever it is in my log pile. Am I the only driver that has to have the air vents blowing in my face?
  10. I am all in favour of grassing. To my mind not "grassing" is the same as saying it was OK to do that. I think thrashing him with the flex would have been more appropriate though.
  11. You wouldn't know what you might find in my woodpile. There is definitely something dead in there, and I'm thinking mammal of some sort. From the smell my guess would be approximately horse sized!
  12. No tax doesn't mean no insurance, if it did you would be done for no insurance too. Even with no MOT your insurance is obliged to cover you third party at least. Again, if this weren't the case you would be done for that too. I was done for no MOT once, £30 fine no points. Bummer was that it had an MOT, I just couldn't find it.
  13. Well, because it is dry I'd say
  14. What's all the fuss about the PO not being open when you want to tax your new car? Never ever bothered me to drive an untaxed home and still not bothered. Years ago when times were hard I was running a car with no tax, eventually got pulled and fined (I blame the missus for insisting we went to town shopping on xmas eve, always were roadblocks back then) Fine was less than the tax I hadn't paid! Ran one car for a fortnight last month with no tax, other car has done about 1k miles this month with no tax. Seen plenty of police when out with both. Tax will be paid and it will get backdated, nobody loses out. Same with new system, just the selling cars with tax bit that bothers me.
  15. Because the rotten wood is dry and crumbly?
  16. That is what I thought, thanks.
  17. Some of the wood I bring into my house has partially rotted away due to dry rot (I am assuming that is what it is). The firewood is dry, usually 17% or below and has been kept under cover for 12 months or more. What I want to know is am I fetching masses of dry rot spores into my house and risking causing dry rot, or is there so much dry rot spores floating about and if the conditions are right it will occur anyway?
  18. The only calls I get from a withheld number is the police.
  19. Sorry to contradict but that isn't true. Apples can and do produce fruit even if the pH is quite a long way out. There are plenty of things that matter a lot more than pH and fertiliser. Pruning, freedom from pest and disease, light, drainage and water are much further up the list of things that matter to an apple tree. Get those verticals cut out or tied down as mentioned above and they will crop again. Top tip with Bramley: you don't need to cut into the branch to tie it down, give it a damned good twist and it will bend without breaking. My personal policy with free growing Bramley is to let it go up, it will come down with weight of fruit eventually. Much better than trying to prune it down to position, that just makes it grow stronger. Even better is to use Cultar as a growth regulator, I wouldn't entertain the idea of growing Bramley commercially without it.
  20. Different cousin, different aunt. Cousin lives in Alaska and had posted on FB that last night she had been eating beaver. Obviously all the sniggering you would expect got posted on there. Next day I happened to bump into my Aunt, her mother, and mentioned I had been talking to her on FB. Oh she said, how's she getting on, we haven't spoke for a little while, I must call her.... She's fine, says she has been eating beaver. Ooh! says my aunt, "I'm not sure I would fancy that at all." "I would imagine it to taste of fish" I just wet myself without any change in expression whatsoever.
  21. I was being asked by an aunt why one of my cousins was living with a younger lad. Everybody knew they were gay but for some reason nobody had told Aunt. Well I think they are just friends I said. Maybe he doesn't like living alone I said. Maybe he helps out around the place I said. Question after question. In the end I said does it really matter why. Oh no she says, it just seems a little queer.
  22. Did it flower? No flowers equals no fruit. If it did flower and no fruit then pollination, damage to flowers from hail, insects etc. Apple should fruit on 3 year old growth as long as there are fruit buds on it, vertical shoots tend not to have fruit buds. Without seeing the tree I expect there is a rush of new growth all growing strongly and vertically. Removing these and favouring/leaving any that are growing away from the trunk and are at or below 45 degrees from vertical will help. Fertiliser won't matter unless very very deficient.
  23. £100 fine? Why couldn't they just point out your trailer had no plate, you apologise and fit the plate immediately and off you both go on your separate ways? Why does it have to cost £100? Just more poxy tax on working folk, that's why! My lad rode round in a Cabstar pickup with no back plate for ages. I kept telling him about it, how it stood out like a sore thumb and how he will be stopped and fined. His reply was that without the plate the truck looked just like a gyppo truck and no copper would ever stop him in case it was. He even said he had a copper behind him in town for a good while and he never bothered. So next time don't just forget the trailer plate, make sure you take all of them off.
  24. I have just been off all week on "holidays". Haven't actually gone anywhere which is always a mistake. I have woken every single night at 4.30am stressed to Hell! Haven't got back to sleep some times either. When I am working I wake when the alarm goes off and rarely before. What's that all about?
