Chip is cheaper than pellets and simpler especially if you have your own wood. If you want g30 chip you just need to have a screen to make sure that any big stuff gets chipped again. If you think of the chipper as part of the installation costs it doesn't seem so bad, it's what we did originally but as others have said you can save money and hassle with breakdowns etc by hiring one In. Our heizohack will chip 10-15 cube an hour but that's a relatively small chipper conpared to what you can hire in.
  2. Haha. It's actually surprisingly hard to come up with something good. I guess that's why we gave up and went with our name. Good luck though. On a side note after reading the name certainly wood for a few years I recently realised that it's a pun.

I assume you mean 30mm chip. Heizohack do a 12inch chipper that's suitable and it's around 25K +VAT I think. It needs 120hp. You can go second hand but be careful with chippers. Wood boilers are cheaper to buy but more work in the long run.
  5. It depends what percentage of your wood will fit through the processor, I think the ones you mentioned are around 27cm diameter so if most your wood is bigger you're probably better off getting a decent saw and investing in the splitter unless you're doing a lot. The advantage of the processor is you've usually got a 6 way splitter and a conveyor so it will be easier on your back.
  6. I think you would be better off getting it extracted first if you want a decent price. Hardwood for firewood is 45-50 a ton /cube roadside assuming it's a decent amount then any tidy pieces, (large,no rot and straight) you could sell separately or possibly hire a saw mill in for and sell or use the planks.
  7. Since reading this thread I've noticed just how many old trees there are in fields around here. There's some really nice old ones around the prince's estate and a lot of new ones been planted. I didn't take pictures of those because I didn't want to get in trouble. Ironically the fields we had with trees on their own we planted completely with saplings but we still have a few around and a lot in hedges.
  8. We've had this old stihl 08 and parts of a spare one in a shed for years. I doubt it's worth much but it might be a bit of fun to get it running. Then I'll go back to modern saws and keep my limbs in working order.
  9. Ours is the same, we season and dry our wood so haven't cleaned it in 10 years. Can't beat 96 though.
  10. To be fair to the farmer that area has clearly been left before. For all we know they've just down a shallow area of ploughing to replant grass for maximum grazing.
  11. Trees are usually left because they provide shelter for animals or its not worth the time and effort of digging the roots out and of course it's nice to see big old trees in a field. As a tractor driver I hate trees in fields, I would rather they were in hedgerows but as a livestock farmer I like to see them, especially on rough grazing land that isn't ploughed or used for silage. My bigger worry is where the next generation of these trees is. I would be interested to know if that ploughing was just to reseed grass as it seems like a lot of effort. The only other thing I can think of is a cover crop for pheasants.
  12. Alternatively you might be lucky and near to Rob D in the topic below this.
  13. Depends on the scale you're looking at. We use a Ryetec 40 ton to split down the big stuff and that will take up to 4ft diameter. The downside is it costs around 15K but you can probably halve that if you don't want it trailed or any extras. There's a few companies but we went with ryetec. They'll also build smaller machines for you. Only picture I have of ours;

I like mine, it's a good saw, if a bit heavy. I run mine on a 20inch bar and it's mostly used for blocking oversized logs that don't fit through the firewood processor. I went for it over a 372 because the vibrations are less.

Sorry, I missed that. That's exactly what I was thinking of.

Fair point, it's not much effort. I only mention it as I worry sometimes when I put a few pictures in a post. Just a thought, could you put a download button in that puts the entire inbox into a text file that you can save on your pc?

Do private messages add up to much storage compared to the 10 years of photos here? That must be a huge amount. I really appreciate that we're allowed to upload photos here by the way.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure that a standard hilux is quite a bit smaller because we've had a couple of people who pick up wood with one but add 6 inches to the sides and you should be OK and you can always heap a fair bit more in. We've got an Isuzu tipper now with slightly higher than standard Sides and a fitted tarpaulin so we can really heap it without worrying.

Yes the one in the picture we used to fill with 1.8. We've actually got one slightly bigger now but do the same size loads for simplicity. Changing the pictures is on my list but I want to clean it up before I put a photo up.

Thanks, I have emailed them, hopefully they get back to me tomorrow. I'll be sure to back things up first to avoid any disasters.

I thought so but when I log in I only get a stripped down version of wordpress (presumably because I'm not the admin). I have the latest version of wordpress on my pc but I can't edit the website with it.

Thanks. I've just realised that I can only edit text and add pictures without going back to the original designers who host it so I'm a bit more limited than I thought.

    Our website

As I'm bored out of my mind after an operation on my wrist I've been trying to improve our website. It was originally set up by someone else so I'm still learning my way around but any feedback especially on obvious mistakes is welcome. Be gentle. 24. Thanks, the drying has really helped sales. We've got a lot of different organisations looking at the trees so with the variety we planted and the monitoring that's already been done we'll hopefully get some information on trying to prevent the die back. Feel free to stop by again.
  25. Nice video. On a side note did anyone get a picture of the chainsaw at the APF last time that had been cut in half.?
