  1. Are you felling everything or just tidying the site?
  2. Our woodland mills hm130 doesn't get used a lot but it's probably done 40cube and is easy enough to use and well built. It also helps that it was (relatively) cheap.
  3. Do you want to do a bit of video editing for fun or 4k semi professional stuff? That's what you'll need most power for. Whatever you're doing I would get an SSD (solid state drive), they've dropped a lot in price and they'll speed up everything from turning on to moving files. If you get one built you can pick and choose components and you'll be anywhere from £500-2000 for top of the range for the main tower. You can play around on the build your own websites if you know what you're doing. 4. Best thing is to go to an independent shop, you'll get less junk installed on it that way and they'll generally be able to better advise you. Apple is no better than other brands, it's just marketed differently and it doesn't run Windows. I don't know what you're using now but you'll have to upgrade to Windows 10, it can be a big change but if you get it set up for you it can basically run like older windows. Also it's worth getting one with a disk drive so you can install old software - most new stuff, including office, is subscription based so you'll have to pay as long as you use it instead of once.
  5. Quads are great and very flexible but, as said, they don't weigh enough for towing unless you're on good ground. The most I've towed with our Yamaha 550 on steeper ground is half a ton and that was on the limit. You've also got to stop. ? I wonder how much weight you could carry on the blade of a small digger? I've seen it done with stakes for fencing and it works well. If you could weld up a frame for it you could load yourself up and carry with one machine. Or just tow a trailer with it. Obviously for speed and carrying tools a quad is better.
  6. Fair enough, just different preferances then. If I go out to do any work it's nearly always people I know so I'm happy to take a hit if they do. I know on a good day we'll both come out well. If I wasn't sure I would bill hourly, nothing wrong with that either.
  7. I think we might be working for different types of people. ?
  8. That's the way I like to work, bit of flexibility from both parties. Too many people try and take advantage of day rates which is why I would only do them with people I get on with.
  9. I said a couple of hours either way. Obviously if you're doing 17 hours you would want more (although if it's a one off these things happen, I've been stuck working after breakdowns). I just expect a reasonable amount of give and take, it's part of being self-employed. If in doubt I bill by the hour.
  10. If you're on a day rate and it's not regular I think it's fair to get a full day if you finish an hour or two early but equally you shouldn't then expect more pay if you have to do another couple of hours to finish the job. If you're able to get all your work done in half days consistently I would personally be asking for more work each day, hopefully it would prove your value and lead to more work/money in the future.
  11. About 40% of our firewood sales are cash (50% cheque, 10% online) so it just gets banked in our business account. The fees are small with Lloyds and I would choose cash over anything personally. Our biggest problem though is that our nearest bank is 25miles and despite insisting you use them their money counters are never working properly...

    Business video

Thanks, yes we've had kramers for years. The pin that the tilt ram pivots on ripped out through the bottom of the arm and it snapped while tipping a bucket, it went upwards weirdly. I can't complain though, it's got an adaptor plate because the hitch is slightly different to the bigger loaders which probably throws out the balance and it tends to get used with the bigger buckets and forks a bit too often.?

    Thanks, really appreciate it.

Haha thanks, unfortunately our loans and finance say otherwise. ?

Thanks everyone, I was trying to balance showing everything we do with not making it too detailed and boring people. It's always interesting to look back at old photos and realise how much we have changed.
  16. Hopefully nothing comes from this (and I don't think it will), fireworks are truly unique and they've lasted hundreds of years, there's no reason to ban them now. I still love them now but I'll never forget watching them as a child and you can see children enjoying them the same way now. Obviously there's people who don't like them but we would have nothing left if everybody who complained got their way. The noise is only as bad as a thunderstorm and as long as notice is given it's easy enough to protect animals.
  17. As it's a new decade I finally got round to going through our old photos and making a video for our Facebook page. Hopefully it's of interest to someone. ?

    Quad bikes.

Yamaha's are pretty reliable, our two 550s are still going strong and I have a friend who's (heavily abused) 550 was just sold after 25,000 miles which still worked but needed a lot of structural welding because it had been rolled too many times. In terms of performance we've had a few Polaris bikes over the years and they're the best I've riden but I would prefer Yamaha for work. Admittedly my current Polaris1000 scrambler isn't very practical though. ?

    Gas is banned

I'm going to take a guess that it's a waste product not a herd of cows that are walked in one at a time. ? Edit: Thinking about it I expect it will be fat like the cars that can run on chip shop waste.

    Gas is banned

We originally looked at pellet boilers when we put our 200kw (commercial) boiler in but we went with chip in the end. Apart from space it was the far better option and with pellets now twice the price of chip I'm glad we did. I'd be interested to hear more about the animal boiler. Is it slaughterhouse waste? I imagine that would be a nightmare with transport and paperwork but a good renewable resource if it worked.
  22. We sell firewood but if I had to buy in with my own best price it would be £75 a cube including delivery so at most £2250 a year. We have an 18kw woodburner in our front room which, apart from an oil Rayburn for hot water, is the only heat in our 4-500 year old farmhouse. In reality we mostly burn the rubbish odds and ends that we can't sell so it only costs a little bit of time and a bit of heat for the kiln.
  23. It's worth going to a dealer if you're not sure, you would probably find one in that size but there's also variation in the bolt holes where it mounts on the saw that you would need to know and that isn't always clear online. You could try posting the saw model here in case someone else has it or knows it.
  24. If you were attaching to a frame or trailer you could probably make your own with only a grinder and a drill for very little money but for the price we bought one because it has legs and galv.
  25. Been a pretty good few months for us, similar to last year in sales. Probably averaging 70 cube a week which is about our limit with drying. I'm actually hoping not to have a Christmas rush this year but no doubt we'll have the usual people phoning on the night beforeChristmas Eve for delivery before Christmas.
