  1. I used fireboard to back our fireplace with double skin fireproof plaster board as the recess lining for the sides. Where the flue goes up through the ceiling its in a ventillated fire-stop.
  2. Thanks, I was thinking around the £180 to be fair. Think it will only take a couple of hours and then making good the ground. Should lead to a bit of landscaping work as a follow on. Fingers crossed.
  3. Anyone give me an idea how much to charge for stumpgrinding 6 12-18" leyllandi stumps from rear garden. Trees felled 2 years ago! Want to charge a fair price as it will lead to other work, hire of grinder is £55 for day.
  4. RSPB have said Buzzards are the most common bird of prey these days. Wasn't long ago it was the Kestrel that was seen hovering along the motorway verges. We are lucky enough to have 4 buzzards, two adults and two of last years young roosting in trees across the field at the back. We have a bird table out back and a peregrine that comes in low across the field and as the birds on the bird table see it, normally last minute, they try to fly off only to be grabbed and sometimes thrown at speed into the patio doors by the Peregrine. Often come down in the morning to a bird imprint on the glass and lots of feathers on the floor.
  5. NIce work mate, well done.
  6. Many thanks Ian, will keep you updated on the progress, just off to check you tube.
  7. Hi Ian, Been mostly using hand saw, hand held jigsaw and model makers small fret. I'm just building the workshop and will be investing in an Axminster/ Jet band saw. Did you cut the the drawers using a bandsaw? Do you cut the core out and then put a blank in the base? I have an Axminster Jet Lathe and have been really impressed with the build quality.
  8. Try the Ariens. Good robust mower starts first time everytime 21" cutting width and goes at 4-5km per hr. Bag is a good one too. Only down side is it doesn't do stripes but it does mulch.(Handy come the autumn for the leaves). You can sort the stripes by attaching a rubber strip to the back plate.
  9. Great stuff. It was great yesterday not to be chasing around and to just take some time.
  10. Hi Si here's one from yesterdays walk.
  11. After a busy past few months it was such a nice day yesterday so I packed up the gear and took the dog for a walk on the beach.
  12. I'm 50+ Got made redundant and now run my own garden rescue landscape and general domestic maintenance service. Should have done it years ago, its hard graft but everyday is different and I don't have the monkey on my back. Go for it and good luck.
  13. Hi Ian, great bowls. Can I ask how did you cut the drawers from the boxes on your facebook page, every time I try to do that it ends up as Firewood.
  14. Quality job there, bet the client was pleased.
  15. Seriously though thanks guys, good discussion and some great points. Does give me something to think about when pricing in the future, especially if the work keeps coming in at the rate it is at the moment.
  16. Sorry, but I'm happy with enough, not that might not make good business sense but it suits me. As I said earlier if I can make a small profit all the better. I simply could not charge £500 for what was undertaken. As for the sleeping bit I would'nt touch her with yours:lol:
  17. Good one. I've been passing back to the client as reduced fee most of the time and sometimes they simply say keep it as a tip which is a great feeling.
  18. Just keep an eye on the batteries, as they take 6 of the cell type. You can get them cheap too if you have a Home and Bargain type store nearby. My lock is on the cage side of the trailer and I simply set it when I go in and turn it off when I move on to the next job. Some kids Knocked it the other day and it scared the S@*t out of them, but then again that might of been me armed with my Sandvik clearing axe responding to the alarm.
  19. Why not try BTCV and get it done as a task in the local programme? If you are interested I'm sure you go join in to learn how its done for the future. Thats what I did many year ago, was trained up by and old boy from Lancashire and then spent many weeks on National Tasks teaching others. Great work when it comes up.
  20. Good on ya mate. I hate having to go back to the customer and ask for more than originally quoted but sometimes its a must especially for the unforeseen such as your cracked post. Its a ball ache but sometimes it has to be done. Like the contingency plan, do you use a percentage of the overall fee or just add on x? Also if you don't end up using the contingency do you pass it on to the customer as a reduced fee?
  21. I've invested in a wheel clamp and hitch clamp for trailer as the glistening eyes where circling the other week. I've also bought an alarmed motion sensor lock that sends out a deafening shrill at the slightest movement of the trailer, really handy when working in the back gardens. (Pack of 2 Heavy Duty Steel Padlocks with Built-in Piercing Alarm £20 0n ebay)
  22. All good stuff. The guy who did the original work hasn't been asked back. I prefer to price reasonable and get repeat business and recommendations than price high and get 'one off' jobs.
  23. Sorry to hear that, your dog must be up for Arbor dog of the year. Try running a steel cable through the handles of all your machines and then lock them all together. Use a lock that has a built in panic/ movement sensor that can almost wake the dead. Locking them together means they have to move them all at once which is not possible. It would take them time to cut the cable and silence the tremble alarm. What these scumbags want is to be in and out as quick as possible.
  24. Thanks guy, interesting to see the range of opinion. Guess the difference is that I go to work to make a living not to make a killing. I'm lucky enough to enjoy what I do and as long as I make enough to cover the bills, make a small profit and keep customers happy then thats fine by me. I'll leave the big bucks to the big boys and hope they get the same satisfaction from the work they do. After all every day is a good day when you wake up stretch out your elbows and they aren't touching the satin lined wooden sides.
