  1. Here Here. Thats exactly what I've been doing for the last two years. Its been hard graft but my customer base is all sourced now by word of mouth.
  2. Im running my gardening services. I had a car and trailer for a year as I built up my client base, it proved extremely useful when taking cuttings to the tip as no questions, no need for a permit etc. I now have a van and a permit.. I use the same gear, machines, PPE etc as the pro tree surgeons and I know my limitations when it comes to tackling trees. I'm lucky to have the support of a couple of pro tree surgeons if I get a query from a customer re trees that need climbers. I'm happy to pass the work on. I do stump grinding and have to hire a grinder from the local tool hire when needed. I do a pro job and have seen some of the results of not so pro tree surgeons. I get regular calls to rescue gardens after the cheap and cheerful have been in and hacked the place to bits, sometimes they include the not so professional pro tree surgeons charging a grand to cut chip and take away.
  3. Like you Im also like a bit of auld leather at the time of year. I've used Deet, eaten Garlic and recently used the Citronella but still get bitten... must be good blood or the alcohol from the night before that they are attracted to.
  4. I am constantly being bitten by Mosquitos when out gardening. I have tried repellents but they don't work, hell I get bitten even in the winter. I was bitten today and its knocked me for 6 as my leg is now swelling and feels like its gonna split. What do you guys use to stop the bites?
  5. Had to stop cutting grass in most of my customers gardens because the lawns are all on sandy soil and the grass has baked dry as a bone. Had been cutting on a higher setting too.
  6. you know its gonna be a good day when you wake up stretch out and your elbows aren't touching wood lined with satin.
  7. I use an Ariens 21" because it goes at 4mph and can mulch as well as cut. Very handy on big lawns and also for collecting up and shredding hedge clippings so they fit in the green bin. It runs on unleaded so no mixing and cuts clean and tidy.
  8. Not sure if its is water stress Gnome, been noticing it for the last month or so. Had a couple of evergreens in a couple of gardens in good health one week then next week shrivelled and dead. Noticed the same with a couple of holly... Was lucky enough to be in Paris at weekend and noticed lot of the boxed avenues of chestnut, elm and maple in the parks all dying back too.
  9. Anybody else noticed that evergreens, hollies in particular are dropping leaves like no tomorrow. Been doing a lot of gardens where the evergreen shrubs and trees are dying back.
  10. Out on the Sefton Moss, not far from Ormskirk.
  11. We tend to get good sunsets but tonight it was unusual
  12. Just bought a 14ft set, and its brill, bit of a pain to transport but well worth it. Only downer was got mine for £300 and spotted on Skylands that they do same for £220 aaaaagh! The extra money would have paid for the carving bar that I want to get.Hey ho:001_huh:
  13. Been working in gardens the last two weeks where the trees are in full bloom, the shrubs are in full flower and the borders are also in bloom. The one distinct thing that is missing are the bees and other pollinators. Any one else noticed.
  14. If you can get hold of a copy try Waking Ned or Blue Juice, the latter is well worth it just for the image of Catherine Zeta with the strawberries, wait and watch and you'll see what I mean. Also try Limitless.
  15. Got mine (Hudson Pro)from Jewsons £45 bargain and they are brilliant, packed up in the back of the Ford Connect and brought out on a regular basis
  16. Bowl of porridge at 7am then a couple of tea spoons of honey from our bees keeps me going all day. Sadly thats about to change as we have lost all five of our bees colonies. All died off in the past month, soul destroying.
  17. Brilliant, well done mate.
  18. Thanks guys, its already saving me an hour a day as I don't have to unlock trailer, load it up and the same when I get home. I simply take the power tools out and jobs a good un. Its good on the mpg too and is sweet on the motorway.
  19. Bit the bullet and bought a Ford Connect 08 230lwb high roof and its brill. Thanks guys for the advice. You where spot on with the parts, got the cambelt replaced as part of the deal cost the dealer £35. Did I mention it has a reversing camera and its reversing beacon sounds like a duck ... lol Now looking for a roof rack and towbar.
  20. Last year I went Friday and it was still busy and lots going on. Although did get the feeling that the place was just warming up, many of the carvers hadn't really got started etc. Still I'm hoping to go Fri again this year.
  21. Was in the Garden Centre today and came across bird boxes made from Silver Birch Logs. Basically 8'' diameter log had been hollowed out and hole cut in front for entrance. They haven't been band sawn.Does anyone know what they used to hollow the log out?
  22. Thats terrific, well done.
  23. Ball park on the mpg mate if you don't mind, its a big factor in the decision which is to be made this weekend.
  24. Yeah it was damn ugly but we bought it when they first came out and boy did it cause a stir especially amongst teenagers who thought it was cool coz it was UGLY:lol:
  25. One of the key issues for our bees last year was that they simply couldn't get out of the hive to feed and collect pollen, the reason being due to it being almost constantly raining. We have fruit trees in the garden and the apples, damson and greengauges all failed to produce fruit simply because few insects could fly in the wet weather therefore no pollination. Combine this with crops coated with potential harmful chems and then a barrage of spraying on top. Bees will only fly at 8 degrees or above and already this year that temp has not been consistent until the last week or so. So it might not be just the neonicto's but more a case of wider global issues such as the change in our climate
