1. as far as I am aware if an excavator has a lifting hook or eye it is covered by loler regs but if used with a grab or bucket then it is classed as materials handling or earthmoving and is not classed as lifting equipment,in the construction industry at least.
2. the one in the pic is a thwaites but I agree with the type you mean a lot more stable.
3. company I work for at mo has a 1960's jcb 1 in their collection, these were also known as "grave diggers".
4. good idea but watch out for side slopes as they have a high centre of gravity and will tip over at the drop of a hat!
5. I remember reading a jcb accessories catalogue a long time ago and there was a "grave digging bucket" listed,no picture though and can't imagine what one would look like?
6. I was told many years ago to always lay uphill as that's the way the sap flows, logical really if you think about it.
7. general rule is no deeper than top of tracks as slew ring is vulnerable to water/dirt ingress.
8. Thanks, doesn't seem to mind hard or soft with 20" on at the moment. I was thinking of going bigger for the rare tjmes I need to cut big rings mainly windblown timber on farms.
9. hi all, I've got an old stihl 048av that I use occasionally with a 20" stihl bar. I was wondering what longer bar size the old girl would handle? the manual says 36" but I think this may be a bit optimistic!
10. A467 at cwmcarn roundabout near sheedy's scrapyard:001_smile:
11. While out and about yesterday in my land rover I got directed by police into a checkpoint set up with police, vosa and hmrc,I couldn't believe my luck! Anyway after having my id checked, diesel tank dipped, and vehicle given a cursory inspection I was allowed on my way. phew !!! After all the checks I was told that the operation was targeted at the high sided transit touring club and scrap metal fraternity, looking at the several vehicles parked there I imagine a good days hunting was had! Is'nt it good to see something being done for the honest people among us?
12. I've still got a 951 I bought new in 1996, gone through 1 piston and several 18"bars/ chains in all that time. cut tons of firewood with it without many problems other than the oil hole blocking up in the original bar (Oregon).
13. Put some in my land rover recently no result yet but fitter in work says it could take 500 miles to have an effect.probably being a bit optimistic, after all it is a land rover!!
14. As a plant operator of over 20yrs,I agree with eddie wholeheartedly regarding the monopoly and profiteering of certain card schemes. For years I held cards for excavator 360deg and excavator 180deg. Now I need excavator360 below 10 tonne, above 10 tonne tracked. excavator 360 above and below 10 tonne wheeled, excavator 180 above and below 5 tonnes. All this needs to be renewed every 5years with proof of 300 hrs operating per category Now to add to all this I need all the above with "lifting operations"!!! I always am of the belief that you cannot teach or buy experience.
15. bit like closing the proverbial stable door but somewhere there is a number you can call that will arrange an engineer to scan/plot/mark out their apparatus free of charge! might be worth looking up for the future.
16. I have used my jackall like this a few times, it has a hole in the underside of the toe that you can attach a small shackle to,hope this helps.
17. Got a capstan winch on my s111 landy, will run all day,is quite forgiving of off line pulls as no rope storage to bunch up on one end of drum great tool just a bit slow.
18.
just curious, I'm from cwmbran myself. Is there much work around at the mo?

19. I was operating a 360 excavator on a construction site right next to a main line fence some years ago, within 1/2 hour of starting work the transport plod were there ordering that measures were in place to prevent possible slew/swing over the fence! Btw this was around 1992 so I imagine todays h&s obsessed culture would make a big deal over your work nearby.
20. Think i'll try £100 and see what happens, can always haggle down.
