  1. Best too handle, t540 or 201 (unless you can get a mint 200t) Why do you need one!? If your working for yourself I get it, but as your learning why do you need a saw? As others have said, best to be 100% saw competent on the ground before you think about taking one up a tree. And as for all the "pieces of paper" warriors I've met lads fresh out of college with every ticket under the sun, who could walk out and buy a top handle with their shiny new "tickets" but they have no experience! Have made no mistakes, have no idea!? Vs guys I know that have been climbing for 10-20 years, no tickets. I know who I would be more worried about selling a saw too. Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App
  2. Very true, kept my chip box build to a bare minimum just to save adding weight. But having said that, seen any arb trucks running round with legal loads recently!? Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App
  3. Had exactly the same! Was on a ladder cutting a hedge, groundie holding it stable for me. Lad walking past with his mates shouts " excuse us mate, you got any work going" but he doesn't even slow down! Keeps walking with his mates, whilst I try and pick up a conversation, gave up pretty quick! How does anyone think they will ever get anywhere acting like that!? Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App
  4. Hard to say what you should charge as we don't know your situation/overheads. But as a guesstimate from pics, would take us about 2-2.5 hours, thats If we ground the stump out. Don't mess about digging it out, could be half a days back braking work! And when you say cut it off below ground level hoping you don't mean using a chainsaw!? It can be tough pricing stuff, but as people have said its not so much a case of how much to charge, it's how much do you need to charge to make it worth while? If your overheads are fuel to get there, and sarnies for the day! £100 is happy days! But if like us, you have wages, insurance, fuel, wear and tear on kit etc etc wouldn't be worth it for £100 Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App
  5. I run NKR 3.L Great truck, pulls well, carry's weight so well. Bad bits! No room in the cab, drinks diesel, top comfortable motorway speed 60-65mph. And with no weight on it, has a harder ride than a bucking bronco! Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App
  6. Sycamore on a very skippy roof! Every time I breathed it slipped closer the edge! No anchor point except the conni next to the house! Over swimming pool and wooden deck of all things !! Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App

  12. Absolutely agree, and for my first two years when I was mainly grounds maintenance and hedge cutting my overheads were minimal, but as demand grew I had to get someone on board there simply weren't enough hours in the week! And we were working with a van, trailer and chipper before which was a massive pain and I think we didn't have the "proper image" so I forked out for truck and chipper. Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App
  13. I would live to think that my customers would wait u till feb for work due sooner, but something tells me that I might just end up losing work ? Live the golf club idea, got loads locally so come next week I will approach them with as you say an attractive day rate. Thanks for the advice! Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App
  14. My guy is on a 0 hours as and when type of understanding, and I've been open with him from the off that there may not be 5-6days a week for him over winter. Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App
  15. Well as things are at the mo were fully booked untill December ish, I have planned to take at least 2 weeks of in jan as I haven't stopped all year! Old mill, I don't blame you for thinking I'm fool hardy for going into this with what I guess could be viewed as a running before I can walk type of attitude, but I believe that no risk means no gain, and if I want to get where I want to be, maybe pushing forward while others hold back could give me an edge..... Or send me bankrupt! Just looking for any methods people use to attract work over the quiet months, don't really want to go as far as nocking on doors ! Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App
  16. There's an old 6" greenmech on the bay somewhere waaaaay north that has appeared about 3/4 times now! Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App
  17. Hi All! So this year I've gone all out in perusing my dream of running my own Arb firm, So far I've sorted all insurances, a truck, a chipper, full time member of staff and much more! Feel like I'm finally getting somewhere.... But! Now I'm concerned that with winter approaching, this will be my first winter with new much higher overheads. Also will be my first winter focusing on mainly tree work. Any of the wise men of arbtalk got any tips for keeping us going through winter? I'm going to continue advertising in my local magazines which have proved useful over the busy season. Thanks everyone Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App

  19. Had the same thing at a shell garage, tried to fill up two combi cans, girl comes out says you can't fill that up..... I'm not proud to say I was less than polite when informing her of there purpose, but was allowed to fill up. Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App

  22. Knut is a good knot! Also what length e2e are you using? I use the shorter oceana. When tying your vt try playing with the amount of wraps and braides you have. Ill dig mine out and send you a pic of how it's tied! Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App
  23. Thanks for your advice breezeblock! Now concerned about bottom roller spindle! As I thought the pressure springs for the top roller had lost their tension as they don't seem to provide enough down force!..... Now thinking it could be due to the lower roller? Had a look at the anti stress box today, plenty of loom to move it Only thing was its bone dry inside, it decided to have a real moment today and wouldn't work for about 30 mins! I will Pm you re supplying a spindle. Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App
  24. Awesome reply! Thank you so much for the advice I will do exactly this! Very kind of you to offer advice on the phone as well. Anything I should watch with this chipper? Haven't had it all that long, but it's fantastic for a small chipper when it's all working! Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App
