  1. Unless it's noticeably expanding its range and out competing other sp (naturally, not from where it's been coppiced) then I'd be inclined to leave it alone for now. If your ash coppice doesn't like the Chalara (which it almost certainly won't) then Aspen is going to be a good sp to have on site from a habitat continuity point of view, as it's shown to fulfill many of the same same habitat elements for a woodland ecosystem (which Ash currently does). There's a JNCC report coming out soon which gives all the detail. Any stump treatment should be tackled with caution as many of the Aspen stems will be linked. Sounds like a nice site which NNR?
  2. Billets all the way for me - a great example of German efficiency
  3. It really depends on what other saws you run and whether you'd want to press a new saw into any other work. I run rear handled 200's and a 201 (14" / picco) for coppicing and scrub work, for which they're excellent. I also run 200 top handles so like the fact that many parts are the same, making common spares and interchangeability a big plus. The 201 hasn't been great, what with its hesitant throttle (even when warm) but I think Stihl have got on top of this issue now. If your just after a light weight coppicing saw then this would be it. In addition if your already running a 50-60cc saw then it'd make sense to get the 201. As for the 241 i've had one for a few months now (again running 14" / picco) and it's light enough for use all day on scrub and coppicing but it's got enough umph for other stuff - it's a weapon on snedding and small softwood thinning. If you want more versatility and the option to tackle larger stuff than coppice then go for the 241.
  4. Ash bark beetles (Hylesinus fraxini) are very common on felled timber. If the central maternal gallery (5-10cm long) is twice as wide as the offshoot larval galleries (2-5cm long), then that's a sure sign. They're native to the UK and pose no danger to your timber.
  5. Not hijacking your thread, but here's a couple of pics of my 461 in action. Like I've been saying for months now - it's a good saw:thumbup:

  7. Not sure what you've heard but I've been having no issues .. .. wrote this a few weeks back and had one since feb. The only thing I'd add to this, now it's properly run in, is my god it's a torque monster:biggrin:
  8. I can't imagine for one minute that it won't be released in the UK. The 660 is nearly at the end of its production life and has been a very popular saw over here so the will replace it with the 661. Regarding a release date, the UK always seems to be last in line so who knows . ..
  9. Hi Rob Have you received the shipment of Sugihara bars yet? How much is/will be the ? Cheers
  10. Ah yes I meant to say the best of any current Professional chainsaw:001_tongue:
  11. Sorry my info was slightly wrong the 661 will weigh 7.5kg not 7.4, but I've just calculated that on those stats it'll have a power to weight ratio of 1.38 vs the 660's 1.40 - which is the best of any current chainsaw.
  12. It's out in Lithuania Ginalas - Katalogas STIHL Motoriniai pj?klai Benzininiai pj?klai Motorinis pj?klas STIHL MS - 661
  13. Well if the 461 is anything to go by .. . it was released in (the rest of) Europe in about June 2012, then US & Canada in about October/November 2012 and then UK February 2013, so that was approx 7 months after the rest of Europe. I'm pretty sure it's literally just been released in Europe, so maybe September this year for us. Who knows though as Stihl UK seems to have a bizarre marketing policy. Although I think part of the wait for the 461 was cause they had such a massive stock of 460's to get rid of first. One benefit of this long lead in time is that you can pick up on the general vibe of opinion, from overseas chat rooms, on what these new saws are like which can help make you decide whether its worth waiting for.
  14. from what i know the 661 will have the following: Power output - 5.4kw / 7.3hp:thumbup: Cylinder volume - 91 cm 3 Weight - 7.4kg Vs. 660 which has the following: Power output - 5.2kW / 7.1hp Cylinder volume - 91.6 cm3 Weight - 7.3kg I think it's just been released in some parts of europe.
  15. I've had a 461 for a few weeks now and been using it on felling and processing some biggish sycamores . . . in short Stihl have won through with this saw and if you like the 460 then you won't be disappointed. it's got good balance, rapid throttle uptake, not lacking in torque and as the anti vibes are the rubber type it doesn't feel like a 441. The manual states you can run 16, 18, 20, 25, 28 & 30" bars although I've only been running 20". The feel, weight and look of the saw is very similar to the 460 and it obviously shares some of the same parts. I'm really glad Stihl have released a new saw which immediately feel and runs right, straight out of the box . . .just like the old days. To cap it all off the exhaust is the same so you can retrofit a dual port front cover from a 460.
  16. Thanks for all your opinions, good to know.
  17. I'm just wondering if anyone's got an MS241 and if so what they think to them? + . . . -'s etc
  18. Sad as I am, I timed them both to be 21 Seconds . . .
  19. Granted the 201 has been a disappointment but all the ending in 1 saws haven't been - the 361 was a great improvement on the 360 - not sure why they bothered with 362 though. From all accounts the 461 is a 460 but just better so lets just wait and see about the 661, I for one can't wait for an improvement on the vibe emissions and an upgrade to flippy caps. As for mending things that aren't broke, unfortunately EU regs on 2-strokes are forcing their hand.
  20. It's supposed to have the highest calorific value of any wood. I had loads from a clearance job and it burns real well. Not the easiest to process but as most of it is small dia it doesn't need splitting. If cut green and then stored off the ground it'll season within a year, but if it gets wet, and is kept so, then it won't last long at all.
  21. Just found these on american ArborSite. Now that looks like a serious tool . .. I cannae wait
  22. Unlike the ms201 the ms461 isn't a completley new saw, it shares many parts, including cylinder & piston, with the ms460 - it's just had an update; lower vibes, lower fuel consumption etc. Get the 461
  23. My 201's the same - press the throttle hard down straight from tick over and nothing happens, it needs to be feathered into operation like a cold saw. I've got 3 200's and the 201 is a disappointment in comparison. I'm just hoping it gets into it's stride in the future with more use, has anyone found this to be the case?
  24. Duro (carbide tipped) chain can only be sharpened with a grinder and you'll need the correct disk for such a chain. Duro chain is worth it for cutting timber with a lot of soil/grit on it (ie skidded lengths, stumps down to ground level) as it won't dull as easily as standard chain, but for any other application I wouldn't bother.
