  1. mark, you are going to need a chuck to do a vase mate. get used to the tools for a few weeks before you tackle a bowl or vase. you will also need proper hollowing tools for a vase.
  2. the last of the great music hall and variety acts has gone. glad i got to see him live, one of the funniest nights i'd had in ages.
  3. to a degree. the legs are made of two halves and you can't have a joint going up the length of the handle which can be as little as 28mmm wide meaning that the strength really is only as good as 14mm and nowhere near enough for swinging. there is also a length issue as the middle legs have a huge notch out of them are simply not long enough. even corner legs have plenty of holes for bolting the things together. another plus means that you don't get any surprises when you turn down the wood and find an old knot or something like that which would mean it could not be swung. i turn the handles from the offcuts so there is very little waste.
  4. just danish oil mate...
  5. thanks, genuine mahogany is bloody dusty at times mate but it does come up looking the dogs wotsits once oiled. it should eventually darken off to that classic victorian deep mahogany you see on antiques.
  6. the meels start out looking like this. you can see the square sections behind it then i turn it to the cylinder you see here and then glue in a handle and leave for a few days to dry. and yes, they are old snooker table legs and are genuine mahogany hence why they look so good... .
  7. 5 pairs of 3kg, 5 pairs of 2kg, 2 pairs of 9kg, 2 pairs of mini clubs and 2 round things called gada's.
  8. the customer picked these up today.
  9. you'll need a bigger one than that jon.. as we are in the thames valley right at the bottom we've had a grand total of nearly 2 (yes you read it right) inches and then it was gone this morning.... in 35 years the most i've seen is 4" in 2009. i've been told that there was some when i was 3 years old but that was only 3-4" again.
  10. i finally finished a rolling pin i was asked to make before the move and it's now with a happy customer. 24" long is a big rolling pin.
  11. the move is done thanks. i never want to move again... i'm trying to get back on my feet and turning again which i've just about managed to do.
  12. could it be a hop hornbeam??? Ostrya carpinifolia
  13. what genus would you attribute it to then??? i can't get a pic myself at the moment as the bus does not stop there, that's why i went to google street view.
  14. i think so but which species???
  15. started using the bus recently and i pass a tree that i am unfamiliar with and would like someone to put me out of my misery. it has catkins that were purple to start with and what i thought were berries at the ends of some branches. i presumed it was in the alnus genus but am unfamiliar with these trees so don't know what species it is. can any one identify it from this image. https://www.google.co.uk/maps/@51.4782258,-0.6066823,3a,62y,265.82h,102.22t/data=!3m7!1e1!3m5!1stwyedKVoEcVHA9k-KcXt7w!2e0!6s%2F%2Fgeo3.ggpht.com%2Fcbk%3Fpanoid%3DtwyedKVoEcVHA9k-KcXt7w%26output%3Dthumbnail%26cb_client%3Dmaps_sv.tactile.gps%26thumb%3D2%26w%3D203%26h%3D100%26yaw%3D172.32924%26pitch%3D0%26thumbfov%3D100!7i13312!8i6656 it has quite a rough bark and i thought alders were smooth.
  16. the customer got a joinery company to get that done. they arrived to me in octagonal form ready for turning. i do have a picture of the table he made somewhere but i can' find it.
  17. here are the technical drawings. Table Leg Details.pdf Finished Turning.pdf
  18. i don't think that i've posted this up here before and i can't find it in this thread so i thought i'd put it up now. came across it whilst going through some old computer files. one pair of large pedestal table legs basically.
  19. surely this method can only get the volume of the tree fairly accurate??? the weight of the wood will be variable due to species, timber density along with moisture content and probably the time of year too along with the fact that different parts of the tree will be different densities to start with and given the volume of some trees could end up being way off.
  20. here is what it has been replace with. .
  21. here is the old one. .
  22. update time. i bought what i was told was a direct replacement for the capacitor that has bust. i've wired it in exactly how the other one was as i'd taken photos of it before i took it out and it still won't work. can anyone say why???
  23. don't mistake keeping calm for dispassion... i never feel guilty even when i get dodgy strikes. here are a couple with a bit more passion.
  24. i'm no gentleman. here's some video evidence...
  25. other than the above mine was on june 26 in 2012. when i got my first 300 at tenpin bowling. as you can see i also got my first 700 as a scratch series. i also had my best 4 game series in october the same year. there's nothing like the thrill of getting a good strike...
