  1. here you go.
  2. it will take at least a year for the timber to air dry at 1-1 1/2" thick. is it just shelves or a bookcase?
  3. finished all those bowls at last. 48 in total for my fair Sat 15th in Eton College. 6" up to 18". burr elm, ash, walnut, pagoda tree, zebrano, olive ash, cedar of lebanon, padauk, catalpa, wych elm, brown oak and sweet chestnut.
  4. yew is much harder.
  5. softwood species all come from the gymnosperm side of the plant family.
  6. for burning either douglas fir or true cedar (not western red) as it chucks out some heat...
  7. looking for a person who can mill a 2' tree for me 6-7' long. i don't want chains to waste too much as it's not often you get to mill a pagoda tree. some time this autumn/winter as there is no hurry.
  8. i need a bit of info on this one like i there a scent, its hardness cleavability and a good shot of the bark would help. can you clean up the endgrain and get a good snap of that? my first guess is that it's a bit of judas tree that has heart discolouration that makes it look like this. with its normal colour it should look like this. there are more pictures here. http://www.hobbithouseinc.com/personal/woodpics/redbud.htm
  9. here is a job i did for the landmark trust. one of their grand houses that was designed by lutyens no less has a skittle alley and i was asked to skim the balls back to a useable sphere. i also sold them one of mine which was a huge 7 1/2" ball i got from ebay. the pic of 6 are theirs, the dark single one was mine and there is a before photo too and a pic of the biggest and smallest then i thought i'd line them up from 7 1/2" down to 4 1/2"
  10. not everyone likes them and they are bloody expensive. called durapin and i think they are cast nylon which is very resistant to abrasion.
  11. yet more pins and balls.
  12. these days they are just cut from a wider board but traditionally they would have used part of the tree that had a limb to keep the integral strength of the wood.
  13. £300 might be ok just for the lathe but you will need the tools to go with it. here are a couple of examples i found on ebay. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Wood-turning-lathe-Record-CL3-with-larger-Bowl-Turning-Attachment/132755430153?hash=item1ee8d71b09:g:2PAAAOSwXIhbfwIP https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/AXMINSTER-AWVSL-1000-WOOD-TURNING-LATHE-PLUS-ACCESORIES/142913395719?hash=item21464d5c07:g:oA0AAOSw01JbfXKf https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/AXMINSTER-AWVSL-900-VARIABLE-SPEED-WOOD-TURNING-LATHE-CE-SINGLE-PHASE-230v/263889755533?epid=24021541559&hash=item3d710e1d8d:g:6igAAOSwSrxbTv0H if you have time you are welcome to view my setup and i'll show you the basics that you would need. i live in burnham but the shop is in windsor.
  14. looks nice but as a joiner i see so much more potential...
  15. finished my balls now. thats 66 for now.
  16. here is a good set of tools to keep an eye on. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Wood-lathe-chisel-set/273418142640?hash=item3fa8fdc3b0:g:UEwAAOSwqLxbesZB
  17. older is usually better i agree but i would not go for a shopsmith if you only want a lathe. what's your budget dan?
  18. most lates will be able to turn those sorts of things the only limit being their overall capacity and power so i suggest you buy a small but decent lathe off ebay and have some fun till you discover what road you wish to go down. i'll see if i can find a few for you to look at. what is your location?
  19. welcome to the weird world of turning mate. the machine you want depends on what exactly you would like to turn. a good second hand one to start you off is the best way to go. i'm on my third lathe and have had it for ten years.
  20. only a small tree...
  21. balls balls and more balls. what a load of balls. i'm sick of my balls. i've made about 50.
  22. when do you need them done? i'll be looking for jobs to do after september and i'm only in windsor.
  23. looks like it's the same species as that bit of huisache i got from the states dave. a hard pinky brown wood. presuming you are in the country are you bringing any back with you??
  24. pictures then?
  25. i was tired when i wrote that and obviously not looking...
