  6. sounds to me like lip service from the government so their rich/developer mates can do what they want. no! i dont think replacing ancient woodland by planting in other areas will compensate very much,as it will take many years to get back lost diversity etc

I wouldnt expect anybody to "run" back from the chipper, but not arse around and i agree that you can drag more than one branch, unless its heavy. im 42 and often get younger guys working with me,youve just gotta try n teach em the best you can. ie pass on experience, its up to them whether they take it on.

  12. the Allerton oak is over 1200 old and stands a little way down the path from the back of the house. It has many local legends attached to it and was one time used as a local court.

  14. i think the wood could eventually be affected by repeated, yearly attacks from the pathogen and bark splitting causing cracking, maybe?

  17. id go with it being bark canker! ive taken a few down with it over time,this looks like its had it for a fewyears.

  20. i often have to stay off work to look after my kids if one of em is ill! theyre very resilient kids and can often appear fine. i think if a parent feels they need to take time off work to take care of their kids they are well within their rights too.

  22. thanks tony! yeah, ive come a cross it on a stem of crack willow with some decay. it had several brackets on it. i broke a piece off and it had the buckskin like flesh and hard upper surface. havent managed to get photies of it, i might try.
  23. Just a question! Does Fomes fomentarius occur on willow?

  25. it maybe retrenchment, suggesting the tree has some sort of issue, possibly to do with the site. whats the ground like? is it wet or dry? it is also important to check wether the tree it self is suffering from fungal or insect attack.
