  1. Did doncaster and Folkestone and back today admittedly I started at 0340. But four and a half hours each way, just proves north south is so much easier than east west in the UK. I sat at 65mph on cruise control, got to get good mpg when being paid mileage.
  2. I have a chipper which is used infrequently and a mate said; well change your insurance and offer it for rent. He is making sense I know, but my tools get looked after and last as a result. For instance on a wet day the chipper hopper + feed chute and saw bars get dried and oiled before going away. Even the truck gets wax oyled every year. Can't bring myself to do it. If a real mate borrows something they know it comes back as lent or is fixed/replaced and I reciprocate. Hate people abusing other peoples hard earned belongings....don't get me started on stealing!
  3. Got an ms 460 ported by spud and it is fantastic, pulls a 25 no problem lives on an 18 most of the time and on the 18 cuts as fast as you can move the saw. You may be able to pick a second hand one up reasonably cheap, even before porting it was good so may be an option if your budget doesn't run to a new saw.
  4. Bit far for a length of free rope as I am in South Yorkshire. Have a look on fr jones they do rope by the metre. The stuff I use is the cheapest 16mm 3strand/ hawser laid it's under a pound a metre easy to splice and work with. Also cheap enough to change regularly and i find that you get much better traction on three core as opposed to modern kern mantle stuff. Others may disagree as it runs rough compared to modern stuff but for your purposes is just the job I reckon.
  5. Winching tends to be cable or dyneema not standard hawser or kern mantle rope. Where are you? I have a length of 16mm hawser laid nylon Marlow lowering rope which would do you. I prefer the timber hitch for ground work as it's so easy to tie and undo. Not good for lowering as it loosens if the tension is lost.
  6. As the title suggests does anyone have an 08 ranger which blows the headlamp bulb on the drivers side constantly? It's got to the point I carry two spare m4 bulbs and a bag of nylock m6 nuts, oh and the 1/4 drive with a ten mil on it in the central armrest. I am reluctant to dig into the issue as it could get expensive as it's only a two minute job and I pick up bulbs for two quid each. Thanks fella and lady arbs
  7. Looks small enough to attach with a timber hitch with a rope similar to what Steve said then use the towbar as a redirect at a distance of say five metres and pull the rope form what you deem a safe distance by hand. Does that make sense? Oh and don't loop the rope around your hand for extra grip incase you need to let go in a hurry.
  8. That photo makes it look awkward, not kept the undergrowth down at all reckon that will cost em.
  9. Done it before and got them to collect from my house where none of my kit or timber is stored. The house is alarmed and defended by a jack Russell and a black lab. Like you a little cagey of new customers wanting to see the set up. Smells to much like a theft reconnaissance.
  10. That conveyor idea is great, but probably a bit pricey and heavy on on my ranger super cab tipper. A towed agricultural conveyor would help raise the price on those awkward drops though...... Where is the next local farm auction. Best not tell the Mrs!
  11. As has been said I find the good old fashioned list and diary very helpful. If I go to bed worrying I get up make a cup of tea and list the tasks associated with what is bothering me, down to; change insoles in your boots. If I can't put a finger on what is stressing me and keeping me awake the act of getting up making a brew, re-checking the doors and going back to bed seems to work. If you can't work it out go and speak to your doctor, they are genuinely very helpful or at least mine was. As Mr Collins said their can be underlying issues or the issue itself which in the world of modern medicine can be fixed.
  12. Doobin, I had one of the early 241's and returned it as the chip would decide to reset and take half a second to do it randomly. Sounds like nothing until you are back cutting leaning larch chasing the hinge when it's too small to dog tooth and it does so as the tree starts to move. Removes money when the first four foot is barber chaired due to the saw throwing a fit. I am sure it has been fixed by now. Other than that it is a lovely saw, well balanced and cuts well on a twelve bar, so light and easy to handle. I just didn't trust it with my safety.
  13. Agrimog I agree with you but it takes a certain set of experiences to develop the "I am safe therefore all is good" mentality. A mindset I wouldn't like to acquire afresh but now I have it I use it as it sounds do you. EOD op, hats off dude never fancied that job i am to clumsy and not brave enough.
  14. Do not know your relationship with the seller so please do not take any offence; if it has it's serial number on it call indispension and check it is not listed as stolen. Seems to be in good condition and looks to be about 8 by 5? If the answer to the listed as stolen is no and my question is answered yes then..... Call them right know and grab a well priced trailer!
  15. Just come from Libya and they run 70series all over the place. Fantastic bit of kit. Will be there to chat about import potential. From time in Africa etc when people say Toyota is indestructible they mean 70 series.
  16. Just on your 110 and cruise control, the MOD ones that have been fitted out as radio HQ vehicles have a mechanical advance and retard which you can set from the driving seat. Not meant to be for driving but just for generating more from the alternator.... However they do work as cruise control, not that I've ever done it you understand. Sure one of the big auction places will have one specc'd appropriately and cheaper than normal ones. Just to caveat this would be unsafe as no electronic or mechanical cut offs, you have to physically release the mechanism.
  17. Spud, Thanks again for pulling it out of the bag at short notice, my apologies again. Ian, My 560 flies on a .325 15, so ported would be an animal if the dr knows where extra is to be found, too much me thinks..... Or maybe......
  18. Promised Spud I would give a review on me newly ported 460. It has way more torque so as you know cuts faster especially when leaned on with a small bar and has the grunt now for when climbing to avoid needing a bigger saw when a 25 bar or perhaps a little more is needed. Fuel consumption seems slightly higher but productivity is way higher so economy, if you don't leave it idling unecsarily, is much improved. Oh yeah it sounds great, revs and picks up like a demon..... And makes you smile.
  19. Should say tax mans cut not kit, sorry.
  20. Sure it has been said but; I have worked out what I need per hour to break even in terms of replacing kit and paying for my family to exist I have then added on my profit, obviously including the tax mans kit. I use that to work out my quote, including kit hire etc which I provide to the customer in written form explaining; a. What they requested. b. My proposed method. c. My proposed end state. I also include any alternatives which may be cheaper or more expensive and then state why I chose my main quote over these. I feel that providing that detail leaves no ambiguity and avoids negotiation, the competition who are way cheaper will not provide such detail.
  21. Just got my 460 back from the saw Dr and tomorrow it is getting put to work. Quite excited because when I picked it up spud decided to disturb his neighbours, it sounds fantastic and picks up very very quickly.
  22. Thanks Albert, will give him a call when he goes back to work tomorrow.
  23. Thanks for all who have had a read, think you have just identified to me a gap in the market maybe time to do a course...... Or maybe the demand is low.
  24. I run an ms 460 on an 18 or 25 and it cuts no problem with either bar but the 25 can feel a bit pedestrian. Hence it's been sent to spud for a good talking to about manning up! I couldn't fault it and have only ported it because I can and to stave of buying something bigger a whole longer. I should add I have not used other saws in this category so cannot compare, but love the 460 it starts it cuts it stops when asked like ronseal.
  25. Being picky now but it can be annoying when you're nice and clean in your living room and pick up a lump with a bubble of sap. This then gets on your hands and the missus reacts none to well as you put black marks on kit. As for your issues the web of your hand then gets stuck to your beer glass as you put it down to refill! But it does indeed burn hot and smells quite nice.
