  1. I have a board of ash in the shed that would probably fit the dimensions given. Flat as a pancake and .air dried for about 15 years. Not sure on transport though as I am in Devon. Can get some pics tomorrow if of interest
  2. I thought the press on the whole was fairly good to start with but now the gloves are clearly off. It cant be good for the mental health of many with the endless and pointless "what ifs" being thrown around. As I see it the government were pathetically slow out the blocks but have done the best they can since then.
  3. If you have had to buy logs at full market rates its always been cheaper to use your oil/gas heating but that hasn't deterred folk from a fire.
  4. It's not easy Andy. Social distancing is a two way thing. Trying to help a slightly muddled ex sub mariner who at times forgets he is supposed to be keeping 2m apart is difficult. Dad backs me into corners when I am over there sorting things out. Also there is more to stopping it spread than just social distancing. We take all his deliveries which we clean before giving them to him, all the food shopping gets cleaned, paper and mail gets set aside in a hot space before taking it over etc etc. Even harder keeping him safe when my better half is treating Covid 19 patients so a higher risk of us being carriers.
  5. Me my neighbour and countless others in our nation. We do our best not to be carriers but they struggle containing this virus in hospitals with all their skills and equipment so jo public will be far from 100% successful of keeping the vulnerable safe.
  6. Because they are cared for by the less vulnerable who will be far more likely to be infected if we go back to "business as usual" Seems there a plenty of asymptomatic carriers out there.
  7. You serious? That will lead to hundreds of thousand s of our most vulnerable dying prematurely plus plenty of the rest of us. I buy into this old saying "How a society treats its most vulnerable is always the measure of its humanity." Time for us to show our humanity IMO
  8. I wish. My main outlets have shut. Used to sell from the farm gate from an honesty box but there is now no passing traffic and I dont want provide a vector for virus anyway. Others are doing a booming trade apparently.
  9. Interesting graph but not seen any others that give me much hope rather the opposite. All I see is the UK public dont understand about avoiding contacts as our case levels have barely dropped while many of our European compatriots get it and have considerably lowered their cases. If we dont come into contact with others we cant catch it. Do that for three weeks and it's gone. If we keep on being so daft we wont get infection rates down so will find it hard to lift lockdown.
  10. Once but that was because I opened it just a few hours after removal from the retort. It felt cool but soon started reigniting with air. Lid back on pronto. Normally leave it overnight to play safe now
  11. I will have a go at getting the videos up on youtube. Took me longer to upload 10 short videos yesterday than it did to make 2 barrels of charcoal ? Seems youtube is quicker to upload to than facebook so I will add them all here
  12. Hi all. This is a page about our little retort https://www.facebook.com/groups/412541675960816/
  13. Is it? Sorry for the guys losing their jobs but its great that we are finally getting less dependant on oil and moving to renewables in a big way.
  14. Agree with most of that other than it also makes great firewood as well. Yes there is lots of sap but this is still heavy and if not left outside to rot off its great stuff. Had a large one come down on the farm and read mixed reviews of it but one of my best customers who heats and cooks on wood asked if we had "any more of that rocket fuel"
  15. As said look after yourself and rest. Not resting is clearly not good for those infected if the PM is anything to go by.
  16. Just seen that and when you see this from the Guardian its not good "Data from the Intensive Care National Audit and Research Centre (ICNARC) showed that of 165 patients treated in critical care in England, Wales and Northern Ireland since the end of February, 79 died, while 86 survived"

    Covid-19

Heard Matt Hancock recently and it sounded like they ordered a whole pile of test kits that when tested gave false readings so back to square one. An inaccurate test is worse than no test
  18. Indeed. That looks like a mighty handy implement

    Covid-19

Bear in mind what they we call a lockdown and what China did are not comparable. My Nephew is out in China and not in a badly hit area but he basically did not go out for 2 months. They have a nominated shopper who bulk buys for many in one go. Get out on the street and have your temperature taken and you wear a mask at all times when out. Nothing like that here so we wont be able to shut it down in the same way unless we are prepared to go that far.
  20. Honestly I gave up on air dried and moved to kiln dried. Air dried in this part of the world was still some way off what is required in a home if you dont want the wood to move. When I was buying air dried and kiln dried I went to Bedford Timber in South Moulton. Steven was very knowledgable and explained how for the best boards you want trees grown in valleys away from prevailing winds as trees that were growing in windy spots had tension built into the boards which would show when planked and dried through warping. The air dried as you says needs to be stored dead flat and beautifully sticked. Never too stressed about the sealing of the ends as there were always cracks on the ends painted or not that would be cut out and ditched. Avoid direct sunlight which is brutal to fresh cut boards. If I make furniture now I use European or north American timbers that have been kiln dried as the consistent quality allowed me to buy unseen saving so much time driving to yards to checking on quality. Sad but thats how it is
  21. Think he had a woodmizer but not been there for years. He has a very large barn for storage of the boards. I thought you said you were short on storage space which will limit your market as for furniture you really want nicely dried boards IME

    Covid-19

You think so? Dreadful video as far as I am concerned but for what purpose I have no idea. The spurious "they" used here and there. The UK the WHO the papers who knows? Just an example where he says how flu data has been removed. Really? Annual flu reports - GOV.UK WWW.GOV.UK Public Health England publishes overviews each year of influenza surveillance results from the winter period. Again I am bewildered by this playing it down. Much of Europe sat on its hands as they came to us all and is now is frantically trying get the jack back in the box with the lockdowns. They are not killing their economies for laughs but to save lives. I will nail my colours to the mast and estimate that by the time this has been through the UK it will have left between 250,00 and 500,00 dead.

    Covid-19

A great explanation of how epidemics spread and can be controlled
  24. Ah yes. It looks so much better now!
  25. Post the data from the next 2 months or so and it wont look so harmless. Coronavirus has barely got started on the worlds population I have no idea why people keep playing it down. Death rates are estimated between and 1% and 3.4% and 70% of us need to have it before we get herd immunity. World populating is 7.7 billion and 70% get it thats 5.46 billion people. If just 1% die that is 546,000,000 people dead!
