  1. What are the pros and cons of the above chain types? Thanks

Single skinned leftovers. One bits enameled and another is SS. Don't think HETAS would be very impressed I'm looking at one of these for my next workshop stove as they are made of 3mm plate. Don't know how well they work though 12 Kilowatt wood burning workshops stove

Thinks it's just because being top loading and round they don't sit well in them. My work better in the larger models.

Have the R2 or R3 version in my workshop. Its great with sawdust, chips and small offcuts but less so with logs. On my second as they do rust out around the flue connection. When my current one dies I will be looking for alternatives with thicker steel.
  5. That's what I hoped
  6. Spent some time recently laying a Devon bank which has a lot of Elm on it. It lays better than any wood I have had the pleasure of hedging with but how does it usually respond with it's subsequent growth after laying?
  7. Birch?
  8. Use the hook for just dragging and tongs for when an end needs lifting. More bending required using tongs. I didn't know I needed them until I had them
  9. Yep got the middle sized one and it's brilliant. It's used all the time when processing roundwood.
  10. For tipping you could try this Ben http://arbtalk.co.uk/forum/firewood-forum/64594-low-tech-ibc-tipper.html Can't say it's fast but it does work.
  11. Haha I am getting rougher around edges working in this trade.
  12. No Jon not less than a m3 when level. Being precise I measured them at 1.13m3 when level.
  13. 1.2 if you mound them up. Bit less if level
  14. Love the chain put on backwards in the sixth picture
  15. Bought some nice roundwood of a tree surgeon last year at £40 per tonne roadside. Nice timber but had no access for lorry so happy to sell it to me. Picked up with defender and Ifor. You need some good stacking or large trailer to get 3 tonne per load. I weighed one large load and had just over 1500kg on the 10x5 trailer and 500kg of rings in the back of the Landy 90
  16. "Yes the cost of unleaded has come down but has the cost of your health? The cost of repair labour? The cost of replacement parts? Using Aspen fuels makes your business, your equipment and yourself more efficient!" Steady on Eddie. I run three saws part time and have NEVER had an engine related breakdown so no labour or parts required. I applaud the work you do promoting what undoubtedly is a very good product and far healthier to boot but regular clean fuel and quality oil can also keep the machines running sweet
  17. I put ember build up down to bark content ie small diameter stuff. As to oak not burning as well as poplar you got me stumped. I work by these simple rules. If it's dry it will burn and a dry heavy one beats a dry light one. Never found any exceptions to date.
  18. Now your pulling my leg J
  19. Something going on with that tree Big J. Never had oak be anything other than excellent firewood apart from being slow to dry.
  20. "So i'm wondering what techniques people on here use? Do some of you then rip up your through and through boards and put them through a thicknesser?" Exactly this. Often get faults close to the centre anyway so can cut these out in the process.
  21. Love a bit of dry oak as it burns hot and slow. Some of the best firewood IMO
  22. Lot of heavy snow showers today Jon. Left the moors with a covering but only slush down here. Quite nice between the showers when the sun came out.
  23. Didn't get around to a BBQ the other night but had a quick play in the workshop with an old oak offcut. Look forward to trying them out
  24. Bang on The cost of training for part time/occasional users is simply too hard to justify.
  25. Then there is hope As said sand with grain unless you can get your hands on a good random orbit sander.
