  1. Think you are over estimating what a cube of dry logs weigh. I would be surprised if 3 cube of dry larch was more than a tonne.
  2. Cook quite a lot. Nothing very flash roasts, lasagne etc. If we have guests probably do a tarte tatin. Pastry, sugar, fat and token bit of fruit; what's not to like
  3. I'm hoping this will ring true
  4. Hang in there TCD Lots of potentially cold months to come and hopefully all the small cheap outfits will be sold out soon.
  5. Rather regretting my support for the Met office today. Forecast was a few showers soon dying out. Reality was showers on and off all day
  6. A few of 1 and none of 2 Most of ours are 3. and 4. 3. Professional types who have a nice new stove and want a quality product having had wet carp off others. Never complain about small diameter logs and a bit of twist hedgerow stuff. 4. Seriously wealthy incomers who fancy the a taste of the country life which means having a good sized stove or even biomass boiler. Both 3 and 4 just want a dry logs at an agreed time. Never have any hassle over price.
  7. Jon how big is The Tuckers Grave?
  8. BBC Weather - What is a weather 'bomb'?
  9. Met office for me. At the end of the day they provide most of the information and others just interpret it. At least that's my understanding.
  10. It was good Jon. Went to a woodfuel event. A place called Race down Farm in west Dorset. A chap was getting a large proportion of his timber for his log business from his farm hedgerows. Interesting hearing how to manage the hedges for fuel. Also got to chat to a hedge laying chap called George Pigeon who sounded like a real expert at it. Saw some of his handy work and it was real class.
  11. Fingers crossed for you today Bob We are off to Dorset where we are expecting winds of 15mph
  12. Thats my current thinking. Giving the brash a quick trim before branch logging it. Probably taking the tips back to around 20mm diameter. Just using a homemade retort.
  13. Thanks Tommy. Is it more bendy than ply? It is not really supported as the boards need easily removable Edit Haha those replies came too fast for my typing Thanks guys guess it may not be the material for the job.
  14. Good little map of the winds here Wind Map - Britain Observations
  15. Blowy Jon but nothing serious. From what I have seen on the forecasts I would be more worried for Bobh and others up on the west coast of Scotland. Looks like it get pretty ugly up there.
  16. All guaranteed washed logs here thanks to the horizontal rain we are having. So can I charge extra for them then
  17. Wanting to make some more permanent greedy boards for the truck. Current ones are some cheapo 12mm ply. Anyone used Stokbord or similar? Does it stay flat as the boards would be pretty much unsupported for the length of the load bed? Thanks
  18. Made some charcoal from our branch loggings this year and it was nice stuff but sales were slow. Want to put a bit more effort into it this year and I am presently cutting wood and not sure what size makes the best charcoal. Bare in mind the max diameter the branch logger can do is 75mm and I have no say in the lengths it cuts them to but this is around 100mm Pictures of what I made this year. I did not trim off the tips of the branches so there is quite a bit of charcoal as seen on the right of the picture. Is it worth me trimming the tips before branch logging or do you think it is saleable? It all gets put over a 25mm seive but few of the little sticks fall through. Many thanks.
  19. Nice one Silky
  20. You got to hand it to the Likes of Makepeace and Savage. They are selling art that is made of wood and can charge accordingly. Do you show your turning work in the guild?
  21. Agreed I like it aswell. Didn't meen to disparaging about it only the price
  22. Did he show it in the Devon guild?
  23. Thanks all for the advise. Been out with the Alaskan and cut an 8" slab to raise the table. Will give it a go at that. Had a close look at the PTO angle and can probably raise the splitter off the floor 4" if need be.
  24. £1500 could buy a fair bit of insulation and draft proofing. Not always easy but could be just the ticket.
