  1. That was for Eggs, ?
  2. You must have been very small for your age!
  3. Put all traffic police on motorcycles. "Sorry mate, I didn't see you!" is a good enough confession.
  4. The ‘water demand’ category is very simplistic and only came about because insurers and builders wanted to classify things. The categories were based on subsidence events, the probable trees involved and distances from affected properties. (The Kew Root Survey). Even the writers acknowledge the problems of how data was collected and recorded and how it was then used afterwards, but it’s the best that we’ve got. Has your engineer got the results of a soil test to input into his calculations or is he just working on the probability that the soils are of low, moderate or high shrink/swell potential cos they generally are in your area? That would also influence foundation depth where trees are retained or are going to be removed.
  5. 'A' big house, or 'the' big house? Do tell!
  6. Falling over because of the instability of the stand itself or because the point of attachment fails to hold it in the log? Looking at the video and photos, it doesn't look that well designed to get a great grip of the end grain (the end grain of down-a-while sycamore is usually getting soft) particularly something freshly felled or like oak. It doesn't impress me that much.
  7. I'm not generally envious of others, but on certain days....
  8. Karma sucks don't it?
  9. The two f+@@wits that have pulled out me today definitely need their eyes testing!
  10. Still looking
  11. One thing also mentioned about imported kiln dried logs is where they are actually coming from. I’m not a great believer that, particularly in certain parts of the world, they’ve been produced from renewable and sustainable sources.
  12. It’s the internet...
  13. Jeez, I never realised burning stuff was so complicated!
  14. It seems that people, suppliers and sellers, may be forced to rely on imported kiln dried logs the ways round wood prices are going.
  15. Post some 'after' photo's please!
  16. We know this, but... Being pragmatic, timber prices will continue to rise until either firewood suppliers give up or customers stop buying. Something's going to have to change, more softwood usage, less supplier overheads on drying/storage, improved cash flow. I just can't see that the current practices are sustainable.
  17. You'd have to be seriously more efficient to make up for any significant under-pricing though. Hedges take as long as they take, I haven't found many ways to do them more efficiently and have reached the stage of explaining to some customers that they'd be paying arb rates for a job that could be done by a decent gardener/landscaper. At least that way, the owner doesn't think they're getting ripped off if they get a price off of next doors gardener which is half ours. Horses for courses.
  18. If you go cheap the first time, lose out and then raise the price the second time, the customer thinks you're taking the proverbial and then shops around someone else and, worse, bad mouths you to all their mates. It's not a good road to go down. Some of our customers comment when we're twenty quid dearer than two years ago!
  19. Do you, or anyone else, actually positively promote a change in your customers buying habits?
  20. If it's something that's been getting worse. it could be oils levels, fluid leaking past the seals in the ram etc. It could also be on the electrical side with poor earths/connections not providing enough power to lift the load. Try cleaning the connections up before getting to involved, the pump and electrics are normally sited such that that get covered in road spray and rust.
  21. Was knackered the technical term that you used in your report?
  22. Lack of use impairs performance - might be worth a try.
  23. Most clients start off with "It's not a big job"
  24. 125 years? Did you get a long service medal?
  25. It’s okay, when Brexit gets sorted, all these foreign plants will be forced to leave...
