I've a piece of alder sat on my desk awaiting dissection to observe the pseudosclerotic/sclerotic/melanin plates and breakdown of lignin due to a Gano colonization, so I thought I'd do a bit of research (I googled it! ) to see what to expect. Last year galls seemed particularly prolific, in certain areas where I really looked, every oak had them. I wondered if the milder preceding winter had allowed a population rise in the causes agents?

This tree was known to a consultant, whether directly in that he'd carried out a survey isn't clear, and he's comment (which I've just received) is that it was a good, healthy looking tree, with no recent excavations (known within the last twenty years) around it. Any fungal activity certainly hadn't manifested itself. Trees fail. We do the best that we can with the knowledge and the resources that we have to identify those with a higher potential to fail. It looks that there was nothing to suggest any problem with this one. -

Up around 6, coffee and fags before getting into work for around seven or so. Half seven, more coffee and fags while discussing the day’s job(s) with the lads. More coffee and fags while driving round looking at jobs, site meetings, stuck in office or on site with lads. Get home between five & seven, after walking the dogs, coffee and fags while doing my own reports before dinner around nine or so. Doughnuts, buns or a bit of cake ( with a coffee) if I get peckish during the day. Maybe I should cut the sweet stuff from my diet?

Not hard to improve the economy by cutting tax and encouraging growth, in the short term. Donald doesn’t have to worry about the long term, not even the next four years cos he’ll either be impeached or found unfit due to mental instability long before then

It’s a well known fact that all big trees are dangerous, maliciously waiting to fall over and kill someone. They all need cutting down, I tell you! -

How far does that crack extend, diametrically and longitudinally? I think that it quite possible that the ivy is holding the stem together like ratchet straps. What to do? The ivy above the crown break will be adding to the loading on the tree, most importantly the dynamic load when it's windy. If the crack is extensive and not just to the surface/outermost rings then the higher ivy is very detrimental and probably best removed or at least severed, but retaining the lower stuff around the stem. My best guess based on the photos.
