  1. Hey Drew or anyone else using the Beeline Blue. If you're using a sewn or spliced eye & eye then what's a good length for VT under the RW using this 10mm cord on say 11.7mm rope? I've been using a 26" 8mm Bee-line with a 3 wrap 3 braid VT but thinking that 28 or 30" would allow the same VT configuration with the fatter cord. Steve
  2. Hey Jaydubb, I've just picked up a couple of Sena SMH10 units and looking to put one on a Protos like your own. Did you drill/machine a small groove at the top of each ear muff so that the wire to the speaker can sit behind the ear pad without damage? Can't wait to have clear communication with at least one person on the ground. Steve
  3. Have had old vertex–great helmet–and now on a vertex 2 which is a pain because the head strap loosens so have to keep adjusting during the day. Even worse if I have gopro mounted on top. Splashed out on a Protos Integral - love it.
  4. And they forgot to paint those flash cuts too...
  5. I caught my three year old going chainsaw crazy in the backyard.
  6. Nice vid. But what's that piece of junk hanging off your harness at 03:57?
  7. And cloggers shrink in the wash too - especially the arbormax. With chainsaw pants you get what pay for - see if you can find any complaints about Pfanners...
  8. I use the Stihl black plastic piston stop on small saws MS200T MS260. Starter/pull cord on bigger saws MS460, 395XP. Have heard of someone shearing crank on MS200T using an impact driver to remove the clutch.
  9. Just be sure to make or purchase some kind of stiff tether. Without a stiff tether ascending is a PITA.
  10. I'll wait for the 2HP version - twice as much pun...
  11. Yeah, never heard of anyone else breaking a gaff either. What's more I didn't feel it happen. I.e. no major twisting in the ankle assuming the gaff really was stuck. Who actually manufactures these? Can't seem to find any link to the German manufacturer - Distel?
  12. Broke the end of a Gecko gaff while removing a dead Eucalyptus yesterday. The tree was struck by lightning over a year ago which apparently makes them even harder and boy was it hard–like climbing a rock. While moving around the trunk after a cut I noticed the spike on my left foot slipping–broken gaff! Must have got caught in crack. Luckily had some spare gaffs (short) to swap in. Hopefully can resharpen the former long gaff into a shorty so then I'll have a spare of each.
  13. Great vid and explanation. Just hope Jared watches it sometime. That swaying you get when spiking up the dead fir sounds like resonance. I guess you don't want the tree turning into a [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j-zczJXSxnw]Tacoma Narrows Bridge[/ame].
  14. Certainly the largest Pinus radiata I've seen in terms of timber volume. Must have been lopped +50 years ago. I don't believe the client could afford the ~$20,000 for complete removal so they settled for 5 days work instead. All the timber/foliage has to be dragged across sloping ground 50m to the back of the chipper. If they plant some Ivy next to the trunk and wait another 50 years it should just fall down the hill.
  15. Not my job so I had time to take some pics of a friend working a big Pinus radiata in Katoomba, about 100km west of Sydney Australia. This is half way through the third day on the same tree. He has only quoted to remove the foliage...phew
  16. You'll be looking for an air filter filled with saw dust on the Stihl
  17. Now I'm waiting for the next video - 'Getting into Hennessy Hammock at 100ft'. That would be something to see.

  20. Thanks for all the replies. I just never seem to hear any other climbers complaining about the ever loosening waist strap on their harnesses. Great harness except for that minor issue.
  21. I should have asked this question 2 years ago when I got the harness. Does anyone else with this harness (it's not a 3.1) have trouble with the waist strap slowly working loose during a climb? Very annoying when you've swapped to a big saw and it suddenly feels like the harness is about to slip off your waist. The original bits of elastic are still intact but stretched beyond usefulness. Not sure they ever prevented the straps from working loose anyway. At the moment I just use some insulation tape to stop the buckle from sliding. Maybe the quick release buckles were improved on the 3.1 version? Steve
  22. Here's a free download from the Victorian Tree Industry Organisation: Working the Angles Very good stuff
  23. The for those without easy iplayer access...
  24. Ah, that second picture explains things a bit more...damn steep.
  25. Aren't the statements 'over the track' and 'difficult access' oxymoronic? A couple of DOC workers and a chainsaw would have made less mess. Guess they had permission from Mighty River Power to blow something up in the vicinity of a power station albeit the smallest on the river.
