Hi, I’m new here and I don’t like technology much so this may not go right, but here goes.

I am thinking of replacing my Makita top handle saw with either a Echo or an Efco as I get on well with both the local dealers, but I could do with any advice / help offered on what make to buy.  The Makita has been a good saw, but is now showing its age (it will be retained as a backup).

    Thanks

Which model Makita you got 222 or 3410

From web research I'm liking the look of the Woodland Mills WC 68 & 88.

Both reasonable prices and look to be decently put together .

I do note the 88 says min power requirement of 30hp which may steer me to the 68.

I have 2 tractors I can use for this, 35hp & 80hp with the 35hp machine having big flotation tyres so I can get into the wood in the winter and not cause a mess.

Any personal experience with either of these machines?

The chains are the exact same, just more links/longer... the bars are different shape, size and pattern. For example a 3/8 0.058 in 18" for your 6100 will be a 64 drive link chain, but the same chain is 68 drive links for the 7910 18" bar...

You don't change anything on the saw - leave it alone.

The 6100 will 'take' the bigger bar but it certainly doesn't fit properly! (Been there done that with my 6800)

I have 3/8, 1.5(0.058) on all my blue Dolmars running from 15" right up to 28". For the reasons you are thinking about - you only need 1 file etc for sharpening.

This is  it in a nutshell , there’s an option on new saws .325 or 3/8

Most times a new one will come with a bar and two chains

don’t worry about drive sprockets there off the shelf and easy too get the Dolmar bars are pretty robust and will last a decent time

  5. Yeah the 6100 isn’t as nimble as some of the huskies that size and probably not the best for smaller softwoods it’s ideal for hardwood

And  logging , a useful saw on 20” 24” bar

I’ve put a few of them out there mostly in hardwood felling

and chestnut coppicing everyone seems too get on ok

Hey Wallace I gotta mastermind 6100 coming over soon

look forward too see how that’ll perform

    Thanks

Passed my CS32...... It is am monster of a Chainsaw and just chews through wood without any effort... Only down side to the 7910 is that it is a little heavy for Snedding... and a Dolmar 6100 might be a better option for that aspect.. Or.. I will just have to man up....?

I was wondering if anyone has used or knows about the larger Makita saws? Specifically the EA7901prz. Are they worth anything, or am I silly for even checking out?

No you won’t be disappointed with that Saw they’ll rip and at the moment there cheaper than most of the leading brands 60cc saws
