  1. Provided I can get it running right, which really should not be a problem, I will be looking for £275. It is however only a push model (not SP)
  2. The exhaust gases exit through a little pipe on the side of the exhaust. This unscrews and the arrestor is a closed cylindrical element on the end of the pipe.
  3. Most mowers we see through the workshop are well used, and well abused. They are usually filthy on top as well as beneath. Just a few owners keep them clean, but we have never seen one as clean as this before. This 2007 Stiga Pro 50 mulcher was traded in today against a new one. It has been used weekly in a fair size garden for 9 years, but the owner cleans it completely after every use. He does all his own maintenance and even has a special 'cleaning bench' in the corner of his garden. He traded it in because of a small carburation issue which should be easily fixed. Now to find a buyer!
  4. The question should really read "are there any collector mowers that do a reasonable job of mulching"

At last, someone gets it!!! I try to say this to some of my contractor customers who inist on using a rear roller all year round, then grumble about repair costs:banghead:
  6. The John Deere JS63V mulches surprisingly well, even in long grass. It outperforms even the Stiga in long damp grass, though the Stiga leaves a finer finish in short grass. A 6.5 HP B&S drives a 21" blade and rear wheel drive. The only weakness are the rear wheels and gears, but even they are fine if regularly greased. It also has side discharge. All for around £740 at a JD dealer near you.
  7. To be honest, Hitachi bought Tanaka a few years ago because they wanted to sell quality 2 stroke equipment and did not make any themselves. The Tanaka name is well respected, but in some markets has been replaced by the Hitachi name. In the UK we fought hard to preserve the Tanaka brand as sales would certainly have suffered had name changed, and were successful in keeping the Tanaka name alive. Another range was launched in the UK consisting of similar products, under the Hitachi brand, but never really took off, its still the Tanaka name that sells most. On the whole, the current line up is still pretty much Tanaka based with just a few Hitachi influenced machines dotted around.
  8. Any of the options in post 1 will not last long in that nature of work, that are just cheap domestic quality machines. The Hayter Condor is a great choice but the new price is massive so the OP would need to secondhand with the possible issues of buying used equipment. A field and brush mower such as the DR would be much more affordable and well up to the task, but for a new machine the OP would need to budget closer to the 2K
  9. If I am honest the TCG22 EAS is the entry level machine from Tanaka, and although it does punch well above its weight it is only intended for the domestic market. It carries a 2 yr domestic warranty, but only 90 days for commercial users unlike some other Tanaka models which carry 5yr domestic and 2 year Pro User warranties. You can fit a TPH200 hedge trimmer attachment to it, but don't expect it to last like the more expensive offerings from Tanaka do. The Tanaka brand is seldom given consideration on Arbtalk threads, but in reality is extremely competent and reliable kit. I have sold Tanaka for nearly 30 years during which time I have sold thousands yet only submitted a few dozen warranty claims. It really is incredibly good and I would not sell any other brand in preference. But, as with all brands, there are many models and its important to match the machine to the task rather than just buy on price.
  10. The profit margin on Aspen is a little low for dealers considering the logistics of storage etc, so there are some dealers who "mark up" the price to increase their margin. This is a perfectly normal practice, but not one that I agree with. The RRP of Aspen 2 is £18.98 for 5litres (high enough as it is) and most dealers will sell at that price, but considering the low profit margin, please understand the reluctance to offer discount on small quantities. Don't forget that we supply Aspen nationwide, which works out cheaper than a special trip just to get fuel.
  11. My interest in oils has been stimulated by TDC's in depth of lubricants, and a bit of research does show that using Polyol ester base stock does indeed create a higher grade 2T for extreme use. This may be a bit belt and braces for out industry but if it gives an operator confidence then that is great. I was also pleased to see that Rock, whose 'groundsman' 2T oil we sell, also use Polyol ester based stock in their racing two strokes. Could this offer another alternative for those wishing to step up from Ultra, and Rock is British! Incidently, we have never had an issue from customers using basic semi synthetic Rock Groundsman 2T oil.
  12. Alas, No. Although there are very many common parts there are also several differences. One example is the crank, which comes in different diameters and stub length. Pistons vary, as do conrods. The sump oil seal is pretty much always the same. Its essential when ordering spares to quote the Model, Type and Serial numbers.
  13. "probably very average" is hardly a scientific answer though. Ok, so RL use a quality 'base stock' but do we actually know that Stihl use a lower grade base, or is it just supposition? The RL video bangs on about high detergency and clean pistons, and this is also what Ultra claims to achieve. (TBH, how often do you find a piston as black as the one in the video, whatever the oil?) It seems that Ultra is good enough for our industry (along with the other synthetic oils designed to cope with the more demanding modern engines) so do we really need to be rubbishing them without documented proof that others such as RL are any better? Let us see the specs.
  14. I do not dispute that Redline Racing Oil is a very good oil, but is it really any better than any other very good oil? If so how? Stihl Ultra is meant to be very good too, so what makes Redline better? I am not trying to be argumentative here, merely inquisitive.
  15. A local customer decided he did not need my services this year, and would repair and service his own strimmer. The primer was leaking so he came in to buy one and fitted it himself, this was on Good Friday. But he came back yesterday as it would not run since fitting the bulb and asked me to look at it. The running issue was simple, he had pulled too much intake hose from the tank whilst fitting the bulb, but not pulled it back later. So it was kinked double, blocking the fuel. I straightened it, and started the machine first pull. But it jumped around all over the bench so I killed it instantly. A quick check of the cutting head showed he had sharpened and refitted the blade. No proper flanges or cup, just a couple of random washers. It was lucky he could not start it or he may have lost a leg!
  16. I have plenty of small, 'man in a van' contractors using them and they are as good, if not better than anything except the Kaaz. If I am honest I have only sold the standard R range, and they are very good, but there is also a PRO range which is even better and is really what contractors should use, but most will not pay the extra.
  17. I have sold very many over the last 14 years, and have very many satisfied users, so can't be too bad. I am very fussy about what I sell and sell JD alongside Kaaz as my premium brands. They are pretty well matched in quality and price, but JD have a bigger range to offer. As with any brand, there are one or two models best avoided, but most are excellent. And they are without doubt the best at collecting long or damp grass.
  18. See you haven't got your toilet working yet, still using the back of your lockup I see:lol: Nice collection of mowers, after another manic week, I think I may get a bit of a weekend this week:thumbup: Weekend off Steve??? whatever next....4.30 finishes?? I was hoping to get Sunday off, but as usual something comes along to ruin the plan. My main mechanic has been off for the last two days to look after her sick kids (well, they are kids that are ill, rather than simply 'sick kids') so I have to find an extra two days before wednesday to get that little lot serviced in time for the van delivery.
  19. If I could get Parcel Force to ship you Simon, maybe you could clean my mowers prior to service. Just spent 3 damp hours washing yesterdays intake. I hate some parts of my job:001_rolleyes:
  20. The New Stiga Twinclip 55 SV H 53cm 4 wheeled mower has at last arrived in stock! And I have to say that I am very impressed. Well designed, well built and with a good 'feel' to it. If you are in the market for a tough 53cm mower that comes in around £250 less than the KaaZ, then give this one some thought. It has a 2 year Pro user warranty too....
  21. Not using a torque wrench Steve? Tut, Tut, what would Megatron say? I have a high tec, super sensitive torque wrench built into my right arm. I use it all the time and its very accurate, or so I believe.
  22. When I first started out on my own in 2003 I asked advice from my then accountant, who suggested two businesses, one non VAT sole trader for service, and another, Ltd, VAT reg business for sales. Within 18 months I had a visit from the VAT man (actually a lady) who was not impressed. But she was helpful and fair. The result was the integration into one VAT reg company and a change of accountant.
