  1. Yes, even though we now have oil fired, so no risk of CO, we always open the kitchen window before putting on the extractor. It is so powefull that it will pull doors open if not latched fully just to get replacement air. If the window is opened far enough the fan will pull it shut. Little wonder it pulled air down the flu.
  2. We once had a multi fuel stove which we kept in at night with anthracite or similar. We had good double glazing. This was in the living room ( thats 'lounge' to the posh) The kitchen had a powerful extractor fan over the electric stove. One morning, the wife preparing toast in the kitchen, the multifuel stove still banked in, and me outside filling the log basket. I came back in to find the wife and kids slumped in the kitchen, almost unconcious, flung open windows and doors. Everyone eventually made a full recovery The windows in the house were all closed and the extractor fan must have lowered the air pressure in the house and reversed the flow of fire fumes in the flu as it was the only way in for replacement air, filling the house with carbon monoxide. We are lucky to still be here, a CO alarm would have alerted us earlier.
  3. Did one this morning and it fell apart when I was clumsy. The problem was the same, in my case the problem was at the carb end of the choke rod. The short link from the white crank to the choke had come out of the top of the rear white crank, but is not easy to notice. Look in top left of spuds 1st pic. Great idea to build up picture library Spud. Must keep my camera on my bench, but I am rubbish at close ups. What camera do you use?
  4. The only good lawnflite machine is the Pro, because its not made by lawnflite but by KAZ. Its basically the same as the old Honda HR series which were made for Honda by KAZ, prior to them bringing out their own plastic deck machines. It now has a Kawasaki engine. But for less money you could have a John Deere, just as good but with better collection, brilliant in long or damp grass. With B&S or Kawasaki depending on the model. These are the highly respected SABO mowers, JD now own SABO.
  5. Briggs and Stratton Quantum engines and the new Dove engine are in my opinion very good engines, far superior to Honda GCV engines ( the GX engines are brilliant but seldom seen on mowers these days. Some mowers, such as JD sport the Kawasaki motor which is fantastic. But, all these engines benefit from an oil change around every 50 hrs, which can be every couple of weeks in peak season for commercial users. They should all give good service if the get this oil change, but very few get looked after properly. They then let their owners down. A good, lightweight, economy mower is the AL-KO. To me its just another steel deck machine, although better built than most, but my pro gardener customers think they are marvellous. Good durabilty and excellent collection.
  6. most of these stories certainly beat mine:scared:
  7. Thought you would never ask! My wife and I were decorating the living room in an old farm cottage. I was hanging paper and she was pasting the next bit. The logburner was going well and the room was almost too hot. I was just smoothing out the bubbles from the piece I was hanging. I had my back to my wife. She was about 3 metres away. I sensed something behind me and the temperature fell instantly. I turned to see what I can only describe as a person size, 3 dimensional shadow, moving towards me and past me to merge into my piece of wall paper and dissapear. The room instantly warmed up I looked over to see my wife staring in disbelief at the spot on the wall. We were both speechless for a while, then both said, 'what was that'. We had both seen and sensed the same thing. I dont know if it was ex-human, alien, force field or superman. I do know that prior to conversion of two rooms into one, the outside door used to be where that piece of paper was. We lived there for several years afterwards with no further sightings. Maybe it did not like the pattern on the paper and had to get out.
  8. It was in 1980, we have never come up with an explanation, or even looked for one. There was no doubt that something was there.
  9. So, when two fully functioning minds who not seeking anything, both see and feel it at the same time?
  10. Thats what I thought,......before!
  11. Does anyone believe in ghosts? I saw one, so I do.
  12. Wot Spud says:thumbup: And dont get thinking about new carbs yet, yes they do give trouble, but not this trouble if your description is correct. You will almost certainly fix the bogging down with Spuds tuning of L, but be aware that if you are masking a fault such as a split in the inlet manifold, then the WOT will be weak. You really dont want this so either check it if you are able or get it checked by someone who knows. (someone like Spud)
  13. The trouble with all the hedgecutter gearboxes, not just Stihl, is that they do lose a lot of grease. When I have one in for service I always take the bottom plate off and have a good look at the workings. Top up the grease before putting it back on. I use a cordless drill driver, so it only takes a couple of minutes.
  14. My Sunday at work turned out more productive than I had hoped for. Turned round 12 mower services. Just cant get that sort of work done on a weekday cus of interuptions. And I managed to keep an eye on the thread of the day, looks like many of you did'nt leave the keyboard.
  15. Aspen 2T is mixed with the high grade and well respected Aspen 2stroke oil at 2% ( 50:1) This will offer the same, or better, protection as any pump petrol mix with oil such as Stihl ultra at 2% When changing any fuel, even different makes of pump fuel and oil it is as well to check the tune. The same applies to Aspen but there should not be much difference if any.
  16. It surpises me how many of the non believers have to defend their non belief by putting down the believers. We dont have to belong to any particular club, we just have to be ourselves. I dont believe in god, but consider myself a reasonable member of society and let the others get on with their lives. If we are not christians, we dont need an alternative title.
  17. I am at work now, just having a cup of tea. I have worked every day since christmas and probably will work every day until easter. My work does not bother anyone except my wife, but she is part of the business so understands the need. What is the need? It is not about greed, although the money is going into the retirement pot, but about keeping on top of the workload. I am not busy enough all year round to justify employing help, but so busy at this time of year that I generally work 6.30-6.30 on 6 days of the week and 9-5 on sunday. Coming from a farming backround I take long hours as the norm and am perfectly happy putting in the time. Today I will knock around 10 mower services off the list but am still fully booked for the next month.
  18. Its really good to oil the blades regularly during use. You get longer blade life, more revs, use less fuel, take the strain off the gearbox and the whole thing sounds better. Use engine oil (new) in a squeezy bottle. WD40 is ok for cleaning and water expulsion, but rubbish for lubrication
  19. Yep, stand corrected, of course it was Dave Allen.
  20. maybe best to sit and watch, it has probably been happening for years. Possibly not a good idea to fall out with the neighbours before you have got to know them?
  21. its anti social to shoot someone before 10am on a sunday down our way.
  22. In the words of the late James Allen (irish comedian from the 80's) "Goodnight, and may your god go with you"
  23. Sorry Matt, there dont seem to be that many. I would like to think you can start another thread along the same lines that will this time only be answered by like minded people. I hope that that if you do, then the large band of 'un-christians' (including me) will respect you and not reply Edit, sorry, relates to the OP.
  24. I believe Aspen were updating their list, but obviously have not done it well enough. TFM are present on the list, but not showing on the newer google map on their website. There is however a dealer at Newtown,Powys. Might this be closer to you?
  25. Maybe I should not have asked! I think I will stick to my vintage Atterton & Ellis grinder, less chance of losing my prescious digits. The problem with throwing sand in, is that it will take the leading edge off. For it to work the cylinder would need to rotate backwards. In essence, this is what we do when we 'backlap'. We rotate the cylinder in reverse with a variable speed drill, set the cylinder down to the bottom bar and add grinding paste. The result is a perfectly matched cutting edge. Just remember to wash away all traces of grinding paste before turning the cylinder in the normal direction, or you will take the edge straight back off.
