  4. Yeah, I thought that too, but it really does seem as firmly fixed and flexible as a new one, so I am going to risk it and let it go back. The saw only lives about 400 yds away from my unit, so its not the end of the world if it comes back, but I am really confident it wont (famous last words) The question is " will I tell you if I'm wrong?"
  5. The skyline view half a mile from my window is changing daily as large areas of larch are being felled. Every morning for 25 years we have sat in bed in the morning with a cup of tea and watched the sun rise through the hill top woods, now within a week the hill seems much lower, and the view vastly different.
  6. I had a non starter MS260 in today. T'was that pesky little impulse pipe again. It had worked its way off the connector to the cylinder. A nifty bit of work with some long nose pliers had it back on and it starts and runs perfectly.
  7. Use your chainsaw, ruin loads of chains in seconds, then take them back to your dealer and complain that they have gone blunt and only been used for a few seconds. Only joking of course, but I have several customers who have done just that.
  8. Just run it on a good quality, low ash oil at 50:1. It may smoke for a while but will eventually clear up and dry up. Only if you have running trouble in the form of not reaching full revs will you need to think about de-coking the exhaust.

I know I should not really ask this, as I am sure you know how to fit plugs and I do not wish to offend, but assuming the first failure was just one of those things, could the next two be due to fitting with a poorly fitting spanner, which if twisted just a little, could crack the insulator. It does happen.
  10. And, when a customer who usually comes in on his own, comes back with his wife, you know they are going to have a moan about something, and she is there to lead the assault.

  12. Isuzu troopers were prone to this when the injectors leaked diesel into the sump, filling it up. There was a story ( maybe only that) about one on a motorway which started to burn its sump contents and accelerated away, overtaking a police car, which gave chase. The story has it that the driver was so confused that he did not think to knock it out of gear and stayed in the outside lane for some time with the police chasing until it ran dry. He was supposedly done for speeding and creating smoke, but I doubt that bits true.
  13. Blimey, I'd forgotten I'd asked, did you remember or did Spud tell you? I suspect it involves a certain little pump and some JB weld though.
  14. I was hoping you were using rubbish plugs and I could have said 'dont use rubbish plugs', but NGK are the best. I've no idea whats causing your problem but will be interested to know if you find out.

  16. Being from the techie side of the forum I obviously feel that saws should be serviced. Cleaning is particularly important, as blocked engine fins and dirty flywheels can cause overheating. Air filters must be clean and IMO the clutch needle brg should be greased. I would advise against cleaning the plug, any scratches on the insulator lead to tracking of the spark.
  17. Like everything else, it depends how they are used. I use an old Oregon reversable motor one.
  18. Lets just hope my aluminium key is tougher than the crappy plastic lug that was there before then. The world has gone mad. I know exactly what you are saying, and do follow the same principles 90% of the time, but I do make exceptions from time to time when absolutely confident of my engineering skills. To adhere totally to your ideals would result in lost business and lost customers for no good reason. Can you be sure that your re-lined Hayter BBC is adequate for the purpose? would it be better to keep it original and only fit genuine new?
  19. I also had a Makita in, the customer had just fitted a new chain but it would not go round. Bet you all think 'yeh, chain break on, duh!' but this time it was not. The operator had for some reason carried on screwing the bar adjuster screw in, even after tightening the bar nuts. This forced the screw to break out of its retaining lugs and tap its way through the end of the slot to end up tight against the drum. Forgot to picture the repair, but it was made by inserting a B&S flywheel key in the casing to replace the broken plastic lug which sits in the groove of the screw, looks like a good'un and loads cheaper than half a saw body.
  20. I've had an MS200t on my bench today as well. This one had had a little accident with a log falling on it, fracturing the fuel tank. Dissmantling also revealed 2 failed AV mounts, or annular buffers as stihl call them, a broken air filter base plate and a split manifold. This little lot, along with a new fuel hose and impulse line is going to cost around £94 plus vat in parts, plus about £50 in labour, but it will be worth it as the saw has been running well.
  21. Thats just a bit jammy, I see best part of £500 there. Make sure its through the books and you pay your VAT and get taxed on the profit:lol:
  22. Hi WoodEd, no, this one is a 1997 one with 4 wheels and a blade clutch. Very tidy though.
  23. I forced a couple of hours away from customers machines today in order to prepare a couple of secondhand units for sale. Neither had been used for about a year, so the fuel had turned bad, but after a little work I now have a very nice Victa and a Honda 475 ready for sale in the shop. I must now recharge the camera so I can take some pics for my website.
  24. Awesome stuff Matt, utmost respect. Its good to see the sort of work you do with the saws I fix.
