  1. Many thanks Spud and Alec, I'll let you know how I get on. Billy
  2. Hi All! I have taken on a nice project (yes, I'm a DIY user(a very keen one!)) as I have been given a non running Stihl 361. I have partially stripped it down to find the piston and cylinder are both scored and the piston rings have disintigrated. I haven't stripped the bottom end down yet but parts of the piston rings are wedged in amongst the crankshaft and bearings. What is common place here? Obviously the piston and head will be replaced, but is there anything else that would be "routinely" replaced following this kind of breakdown? Also, what is the opinion of using Stihl parts against cheaper alternatives? As stated above, I am a DIYer pottering around in 3 acres and am not relying on my chainsaw as a source of income. Any thoughts or advice gratefully received. Billy
  3. Thanks guys, I'll drain off what little fuel remains and put the correct through it. Regarding a blow out, I thought there may have been a treatment I could put through it to clean the carb after excessive oil has been put through. But as you say, I won't worry unless I notice a drop in performance. Thanks!
  4. Hi all. I have just bought a BR500 backpack blower off eBay and am looking for a bit of advice. The previous owner ran it on a 25:1 mix for some reason. Is there anything I can run through it to give it a blow out without damaging it or should I just run it on a 50:1 and leave it? I should add it has only had very light use and runs perfectly, just seeing if some preventative maintenance was in order!
  5. Here are some images I have just taken of the problem trees. Thanks again. Billy
  6. Thank you for the quick replies! I'll get images loaded up later. Billy
  7. Hi all, I have a dozen or so Apple trees which have been thoroughly neglected. They have had sunlight obstructed by 60ft Spruce trees which I have dropped but due to this they have grown right over (towards the sun) and are terribly bent over. They bear good yields but the branches are touching the floor as the tree is bent over. I need to severely cut them back and maybe support/stake them up to encourage them to grow vertically? How do I go about this and when is the best time of year to do it as I don't want to kill them (wife will go nuts!). How far can I cut them back? I can load up some images if that helps? Thanks in advance Billy Lime Electrical
  8. Thanks for the great response, I do love this forum. I am in between Retford and Worksop, will be now scouring eBay for stihl with anti vibe, will also price hiring one out, thanks a million guys!
  9. Ok, fs90 out the window! Flail mower would be great but the bramble is amongst woodland and you could only really get in with a mini tractor. I realise I have some graft to do and not looking forward to it! So is the general consensus to go with Stihl?
  10. Both of the Stihl models are much more expensive than I wanted to spend, the £400 mark was a bit steep for me but don't mind spending it as it's good gear. The Kawasaki is coming in at £500 so is a bit over budget
  11. I have an acre of brambles to get rid of and I want to buy a brushcutter. This isn't my line of business, I'm a sparky, so I don't want to spend a fortune but at the same time I want something fairly heavy duty. I have been looking at the stihl fs90 as it has the solid shaft. What is the husqvarna equivalent. The huskies run on petrol only, is that an advantage over running on 2 stroke? Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. Billy Lime Electrical
  12. Does ash burn as quick and as hot as pine? When heating up the tub I have about 1.5 tons of water to heat.
  13. Hi, first post so hello to all, have been using this forum for some time and would just like to say how useful it's been. I have a wood burning hot tub and my seasoned softwood, pine I think, burns hotter and more violently than my seasoned hardwood so is more suitable for my needs. I am looking to fell a few more trees to season but would like to know what to plant to replace what I use. Does anyone know of a more suitable tree to plant? I live on a 3 acre plot and already have some woodland but my property sits within a larger wood. The soil is fast draining if that's relevant! Thanks in advance Billy Lime Electrical
