  1. Back to the HS81 Its almost impossible to offer any diagnosis on this problem from afar 1) the symptoms have changed from post to post. 2) every possible cause has been investigated and fixed or discounted, but has the work been done properly? if so the problem should be sorted. One possible ,but very remote chance left. I once had a machine in which would not run when on its side. Eventually traced it to a pea sized lump of carbon which floated around inside the exhaust and occasionally blocked the outlet from the exhaust when it was facing down. Otherwise take it to a decent techie, but be warned, if I was that techie I would do everything again, not trusting the work done by others, so the bill could be quite large.
  2. Then you should have got closer and not had the Landy in the way:biggrin:
  3. Oh well, compressions not the problem then, thinking cap back on!
  4. the part number for the insulator is 4210 120 2200 but it is listed by Stihl as being obsolete, as you have probably already found out. Good luck with finding a used one!
  5. You will need a screw in comp tester with a 10mm adapter, which are not as common as the 14mm ones. A push fit will be no good at all. Did your dealer not test it when it was in? What was his diagnosis on its problem? Edit Sorry Rich, was writing while you posted.
  6. Just as Rich asks, have you tested the compression. Although compression tests on 2 strokes are not definitave, they do give a very good clue as to whats going on. Your symptons, difficult cold start, not idling, very difficult hot start, wet exhaust, are all typical of a low compression. I would do a comp test and hope to get around 120 psi, but I expect you will only have about 80 psi with those symptons. If this is the case then the next step is to find out the cause. Best of luck.
  7. No Rich, the 4 mix engine requires a sealed crankcase very much like a 2 stroke, and the volume inside the tappet cover is integral to this. With the cover off the air/fuel/oil mix cannot be drawn into the cylinder.
  8. Very nice work, I wish I had an artistic flair, I could work wonders with all my scrap.
  9. Very nicely made Mr Albedo:thumbup1: BTW I did not say what mine was made for as anyone who needed one would know as soon as they saw it:lol:
  10. The thing about forums is that all the members read them not only for the educational value but also the entertainment. Many regular contributors suffer from 'itchy finger' and can't wait to offer advice or to criticise, as long as it is done with good intent then its not a problem. After all, it gives us something to read. I agree that bad advice, even if well intentioned is no advice at all, but to be fair, it soon gets sorted out. In this case Matts advice was fully debated and subsequently dismissed, so in the end the post was usefull. I did feel that he was treated a little to harshly and without due respect though, a few manners dont go amiss.
  11. AlvinD, Just like the others say, be very carefull not to run without the cover on if the clutch drum has been removed, If should self tighten on acceleration, but can spin off on decelereration. If it spins off, at best you play hide and seek, at worse it rebounds off the wall and hits you in the nuts. And as regards the running, hopefully it is tuning as the other techies have said, but it could be low compression, you say it pulls easily. You can sometimes start thiem and they will run at revs but will die as the revs drop off. If the comp is down no amount of tuning will help.
  12. No probs, msybe suggest he phones technical himself if he a any doubt. With regards the cans, I should be meeting Axel from AAoil and their new sales executive, Eddie, later in the week. Will put the recycling/diposal issue on the agenda.
  13. Much too good for George Clarkes 'amazing spaces' on C4, Did you see the £5000 foresters shelter?....
  14. Added to which, the flywheel spigot bearing does not rotate when the clutch is engaged and the vehicle is driving.
  15. are you sure its losing gears, or losing drive? if losing gears its in the gearbox or drop box, but if losing drive its in the clutch. Cant quite see how you can lose gears and get them back.
  16. Nautical terminology me hearty, boats have 'overheads' not ceilings.
  17. Andy, I guess the disposal of cans is a problem then as you could be using up to 4 a week if really busy. I get a whole lot more than that, but they go in my commercial waste, so I,m OK, and as I have mentioned before, my customers are welcome to use this service for free. It may be worth asking your dealer if he can offer the same service. Your local recycling centre should take them, but not as trade waste, so you would have to go in with your car. Best to take the wraps off first so nobody gets twitchy about the fact that they contained petrol. Leave the caps off too. With regards to the Stihl warranty issue. This is a myth. Anglo American Oil have an official letter from Stihl which approves the use of Aspen. I have also spoken to Stihl technical department myself on this issue, and they stated that they had no concerns whatsoever over the use of Aspen. The fact is that it can do no harm whatsoever to saw or any other equipment as it is so pure. Manufacturers encourage its use because of the accuracy of the oil mix. I have had one engine seizure on a 2 year old machine in domestic use passed under warranty, purely because that machine had been used solely on Aspen. It would not have been passed had petrol been used.
  18. Yes, that is an issue with screw top plugs, not only NGK. Its strange but i only tend to see this on saws, not other kit, and not all the time. Bosch do score a little here. The Ngk CMR6H 10mm plug in the 4 mix stuff is actually a fixed cap.
  19. Ngk all the way for me. Buy about 1000 each year Dont like Champion Tried Oregon once, sent most of them back as I had too many problems. Never tried Bosch.
  20. This is the same machine that is marketed under the Mitox brand. Mitox dont do the 7 tonne version of horizontal machine, but I do know that when they tested the machines prior to marketing them, they found that they did not meet the stated tonnage, so they downrated their machine to 5 tonnes. even if the Titan 7 tonne machine produces less than 7 tonnes it will still be enough for domestic use. It will be worth having the quicksplit option which limits the ram return travel, speeding up splitting time (standard on Mitox version)
  21. Sounded like a 35cc Mcthing to me, certainly struggled in the cut. I was getting bored in the first, chest high, strange angled cut. The problem with this posting this sort of video on youtube, is that other planks use it as an educational vid in how to cut down a tree.
  22. You see time? I dont see the time anywhere, just things like ' 3 minutes ago'
  23. Timing is also critical, so its worth checking. It will start if its a tooth out but wont run well. It however, should not be changeable from on minute to the next. UNLESS... might be worth checking the flywheel key, it could have sheared. Just a thought?
  24. yes Rich, it does have a little pump piston. Silly question, but are the valves adjusted properly. They are critical.
  25. Their breath is much better for you if in a confined area:biggrin:
