  1. A teflon coated manager caused one of our subbies to do something he shouldn't have, because the subby failed to indicate when he joined a dual carriageway the copper pulled him. Then he realised there was more than one contravention and started seeing what else the lad could be charged with. An interesting one was driving with a trailer with defective brakes, there was nothing wrong with the brakes but the subby had failed to connect the breakaway cable (as he was only intending to drive to the next layby a few hundred yards further on). He then decided to go for the company with the O licence requirement (we had one but obviously not displayed in the window of the transit). I took the unladen trailer to the council weighbridge, photographed it and had the manager sign the weigh ticket with all the trailer details. It went to court and our barrister submitted the proof and the case against the company was dismissed, the book was thrown at the subby and I never saw him again.
  2. I don't mean to cause offence but do have a bit of experience of having police and mot people not knowing the rules simply because they were not checking the correct bit of legislation, the policeman insisted on pursuing a prosecution for not having an O licence when pulling a trailer and transit combo over 3.5 tonnes despite my providing proof the trailer was less than 1020kg and exempted.
  3. The knotters haven't changed but I didn't see what those little rubber feet going up and down were dooing. What dry matter in those bales? Weight? and how much plastic per bale cost?
  4. What's that with the knotters at 4:30, does it do multiple binds within the pack? Last baler I used was a New Holland 276 around 1976
  5. I wonder if he asked the right question, DVSA will normally assume a trailer has type approval, so one with type approval below 3.5tonees will not need to be plated for HGV or tested. A home made trailer to carry the mill will be as @Justme says. Also anything travelling above 25mph requires suspension.
  6. I saw Christine trying to sing songbird on tv a while back, she's lost it. She was perfect in both senses with Chicken Shack, beautiful legs and a cute nose. A bloke in the class above me went to play with her in the brief solo bit before Fleetwood Mac
  7. Yup that's what I call spalted
  8. I thought spalting was the black lines (psuedoschlerotic plates) formed between colonies of fungi attacking the wood
  9. It was a task for volunteers, the LA are the highway authority and stipulate only their power tools be used. The charity sent me on a refresher course for brushcutter in April but have not allowed me to use one yet, landowners are okay but insurance is an issue. Incidentally at the refresher course we were equipped with the LA's machines which the trainer rejected as not fit to use.
  10. I guessed the wrong way He'd left before (1976ish) I was at the firm I was thinking of, boss got a replacement wife.
  11. Thanks for letting us know. I'll sticjk with steel one way or another I was helping barrier off a bit of bridleway that had fallen into the river today, I ended up using an old fagging hook to widen the verge opposite the barrier as my mulcher blade was verboten.
  12. Does the mill have suspension?
  13. Did I mention payment? It's a subject I'd happily discuss in another thread if you open one, there are differences in interpretation
  14. Yes, I won't be climbing so just brushcutter and the occasional small tree to remove. I'll hold off getting my own PL until I meet up with the LA's footpath officer tomorrow.
  15. Is £500 the cheapest deal available for low turnover? I may need some as a farmer has agreed for me to do some vegetation management on public footpaths across his land but claims his PL/EL won't cover my working. The volunteer groups I belong to don't allow loan working on theirs.
  16. That used to be the special case for agricultural trailers not normal road going vehicles
  17. You can't have a referendum on everything, nothing would get done. It's the same with companies, the shareholders elect directors who then choose a chairman, who then makes decisions. IMO for confidence you need decisive action and too much conferring delays this. Of course this means sometimes the wrong course is taken but the tories have put us in this situation where we would have been better off getting out two years ago, right or wrong.
  18. Yes Chairman Schickelgruber
  19. Please report obstructions and intimidation to the Ramblers else nothing will be done about it.
  20. It's not so much a primer as a purge pump, it takes fuel from the tank to the carb and then returns it to the tank, purging any air out of the system as it does. So if you leave it for a long time the fuel can disappear. Also the choke has two effects, it cuts most of the air off but it also creates a vacuum which sucks fuel from the carb to the intake. So you normally pull it over a few times till it fires and then open the choke to the run position. If it doesn't fire after a half dozen pulls or so you risk flooding the saw. I have a saw made before primer bulbs were common and that always needs 11 pulls before it fires if it has been left for a couple of weeks or more.
  21. As conversion is a civil offence it likely it happens now and again. The police won't be involved (apart from if a vehicle is involved aka TWOCing) as it normally concerns where a something is in somone's possession legally ( maybe they borrowed it) and then they sell it on without the owner's possession. Did I miss tea break?
  22. I hadn't considered that the growth form was a natural sport, not being familiar with corkscrew hazel. It would still be interesting to know why the leaves at the top of the shrub are curling.
  23. It looks a bit like a growth problem often caused by overspray of a growth controlling chemical causing the etiolation.
