  1. I imagine when using a small tractor the engine stalls before the shearpin breaks but with a larger tractor breaking the shearpin becomes a problem? So if it has a large flywheel logic would suggest running it faster overcomes the stalling but then does the power requirement go up as there are more cuts in a given time so the small tractor then cannot cope with a long large log?
  2. That's certainly what happened when they ran the sprout matador ring die machine for the first time at Bridgend as reported to me by my erstwhile co directors who were working for the charity at the time.
  3. Makes sense, it means you cannot clear cut any woodland without a licence by repeatedly using the exemption. It should preserve small native woods without making applications for trivial management in woodland.
  4. Barry @GardenKit doesn't post here much. I assume the valves just have keyhole keepers rather then collets?? Can you compress the spring without compressing the washers, so they dangle loose and you can jiggle then off?
  5. How big do insects' arseholes get?
  6. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frass "Frass refers loosely to the more or less solid excreta of insects, and to certain other related matter. " So we normally see it as fragments of wood dust at boring insect exit holes. The OP's picture looks a bit more like an animal has collected material for a nest unrelated to the bees
  7. Stubby is titanium reinforced I believe
  8. Not a bad change IMO, when I started you could fell 30m3 without a licence and that was 2 six wheeler loads. Will they have the staff to handle it? What is the statute of limitations on the offence of felling without a licence?
  9. You're supposed to hold the top of the bag in one hand and allow the squirrel to pop its head out so the priest could deliver the last rites in your other hand in practice if it got its head out the body would follow too soon after for me to do anything about it.
  10. My first job in the 70s involved checking the trap line each morning and evening. I came to dislike humane traps, especially family ones as doing as FC recommended was difficult at best of times and impossible if a whole family were trapped. It did no good in any case as neighbouring land was not controlled.
  11. Which is why I mentioned the law in England . Anyway I don't see much of problem by using exemptions he''ll get there in 4 quarters without resorting to lopping and topping, in the absence of TPOs
  12. That can be debatable, the term is within the curtilage of a dwelling in England, so it is often interpreted as the area of land managed and enjoyed by the householder, typically shown by having been mown or cultivated. Thus an area abandoned to forest ceases to be within the curtilage. I think it is all probably garden but even if not there are ways around it if you want a bit of light in.
  13. pippy is post 1980 description but I think of it being more dispersed rather than the paw marks
  14. Yup, loose bar nuts is the normal reason for failure
  15. Yes and the thing about a generator is it gives lots of waste heat to keep you warm. I cruise every day I'm on the boat, otherwise I wouldn't go, but the owner has a genset that runs on red diesel (taxed at marine rate) to keep the auxiliary batteries charged when moored. The coolant runs the hot water system but a 4 year old Morso Squirrel running on smokeless coal is what keeps living area bearable in winter. P.S. the 100Ah battery for the bow thruster adds a bit of redundancy, all cooking and water boiling is by propane.
  16. So my voltage was much too low and should have been set to 12.06V but I did say DoD of 50%. Apart from starting vehicles/machines I have not depended on batteries, what does worry me about using old ones is the self discharge goes up, so the power you put in is a lot higherr that what you get out. With a 4kW array only managing about 0.5kWh on a December day you cannot afford to lose a lot.
  17. Eggs has it right. It is possible to simply sense the battery voltage and cut the battery off at 11.5V (or whatever voltage equates to 50% depth of discharge). This is what we had on our welfare wagons.
  18. It's 4 years for a structure, so build it and no enforcement for 4 years and it can stay. 10 years is how long you have to get away with the use before you can get a certificate of lawful use.
  19. I won't be back there for a while but will see about more photos.
  20. I suspect David is right and the benches are not directly under the crowns but of course many groups sit on the grass on a sunny day. Yes being a worrier by nature I do listen out for any cracking.
  21. Does anyone here collect and use old tools, like hand saws and wooden planes? A lady friend is downsizing and some of her late husbands collection needs a new home. I have no real idea of the value but see the planes don't attract much on ebay. Personally I gave up with these saws and the faff of setting and sharpening them more than 30 years ago when disposable induction hardened ones became available
