  1. So in your opinion, is it market ready? No harm in bringing it, I'm sure we can find some logs to drop it into, see how it compares...,.
  2. I think the cheapest work positioning sit harness on general sale is the old petzl Navaho at £100 inc vat, while stocks last.....
  3. Will do, thanks Vince Just climbing I'm afraid Gary
  4. You can learn to tie a basic prusik or blakes with any old bit of rope, you don't have to climb on it! Mind you, assembling a home made pulley saver is a good opportunity to learn a prusik. Bearing in mind I think don't think Jack is intending to just buy some gear and go off by himself, I assume this is so that he can bring some stuff to the rec climb and learn how it works from others.... And a cheap harness is £100, you can't buy any new arborist rope for under 60 quid so far as I have seen.... so there's no such thing as 'cheap' anymore!
  5. It's a wonder anyone stuck with it after that! I do see the 'point' of starting the old fashioned way, but we don't start of learning to cut trees down with heavy old 08S's with no chain brakes do we! I never climbed at all on a straight forward prusik, I don't miss climbing on a Blakes hitch. I don't feel any sentimentality toward climbing on a blakes, and shoving it up the line.... If the oportunity had been there to learn on something more efficient I would rather have done that.... With the price of everything these days it seems sensible to buy something which is going to last you and be more adaptable to a developing climbing style....
  6. Only issue I see with that is that the Navaho harness with it's single ventral ring makes it a bit tight with 2 carabiners, I really like the single attachment point arrangement of the hc or sky walker pulley...
  7. An inexpensive way in Jack is a harness like a Petzl Avao or Navaho, a hitch climber kit and a plain ended rope, splices add money. Navaho harness... Petzl Navaho Sit climbing harness | F R Jones and Son Aeris is pretty cheap and seems to be OK for both SRT & DDRT, not to mention mechanicals, so a good all round rope.... Marlow Aeris blue & yellow 11mm 1 splice | F R Jones and Son And hitch climber kit.... [8mm cord on 11mm rope] HitchClimber Friction Hitch System You'll need a lanyard, which you can make up yourself cheap enough with a couple of lengths of cord and 2 biners, plus a pulley if you're so inclined and you'll want a cambium saver, but there's no reason why you couldn't make up an adjustable one yourself as well, or even a pulley saver for a few quid, and a throwline is always handy....
  8. Doesn't matter what job you're going for these days, there's going to be a lot of competition for it, especially if it's a good one. There are a limited number of jobs out there, you just have to be better than everyone else....
  9. Here's the thread.... http://arbtalk.co.uk/forum/climbers-talk/55180-rec-climb-west-worcestershire-hfds-shropshire-border-20th-april.html Pm me your email address if you're interested and I'll send you all the info...
  10. Spud might have one. I've got a couple I'm re-building, will keep one sell one... I reckon 150 would do maybe 75% of my top handle work..... It's on the massive lst!
  11. Why not buy a 150t? Not big enough for big dismantles but plenty for most things and will still have a place when the husky eventually comes out. Not too expensive either... I do fancy one myself, got to finish rebuilding the 200t first though...
  12. Hereford Tec is not a bad college. I think Jack (caveman27) was looking at this course. Have you thought about approaching estates? Places like Eastnor castle, that sort of thing ( don't know any down your way. Sorry) There's a rec climb on the 20th April if you want to come along.
  13. Hmmm, wonder if mr berlusconi's accounts will be touched.....?
  14. Ain't that the goddam truth...
  15. I think there will be spiderjack and zigzag at the rec climb on the 20th of April if you want to come along.....
  16. I believe it's not just foreign nationals but citizens as well. Anyone with savings in Cypriot banks....
  17. Interesting thread. It's never as black and white as we'd like it though is it? Seems to me that when they stopped Treesnatcher it was a stop worth making, who knows, it could well have been someone else's truck being made off with in the night, and if any of those coppers had a friend in this industry, or any other where your tools of the trade are your income, he would have felt compelled to slap anyone around a bit who he thought was interfering with that. Fair play, I'd like to have someone fighting my corner against tealeaves.... What I object to are the lazy pulls when they know full well they're off the mark, or easy targets just to make it look like they're doing something. But it's not entirely their fault they can't go wading into gypsy sites bashing skulls to get back stolen equipment, the liberal policy makers tie their hands pretty well, even if it's in some cases unitentionally... I have a good friend who is one of our local bobbies, he comes for coffee, makes sure all is well, but when the stereo was lifted out of our car on our drive [by a local oik] and I suggested he pay him a visit he said he couldn't, no evidence, the fact that he'd been at our property was irrelevant. He did get SOCO out for me though which made me chuckle! There are good coppers and bad coppers, just as there are good and bad tree surgeons, builders, doctors. If you get a good one, brilliant, if you get on the wrong side of a good one, it's a nuisance, but if you're clean all will be well. If you need a good one and get a bad one, get his [or her] collar number and complain like hell. If their superiors get enough complaints about an officer they WILL do something about it. Often just move them to another patch but even so, it's a start....
  18. We've had a base there for years Ted
  19. Brilliant David, enjoyed that, thanks for sharing. Who was going up on the Actsafe at the start? Was Drew still on it? Nice choice of soundtrack as well, Awesome Wave is a great album.
  20. LA's are in desperate need of a shake up. Not long ago I tried to get us an opportunity to quote to build a new 8 classroom block at my daughter's high school. Looking at the feasibility study it looked like a comfortable 8 to 9 hundred thousand. The LA building economists had budget costed it and got it to over £1m. This meant it didn't go to tender but went to framework, where 3 contractors take it in turns to do all the jobs over £1m without it going to tender.... What do you think the job is actually costing....? Yup, £2million..... So that's £1m of public money squandered.... A big chunk of it will go back into the property services department for 'project fees' justifying unnecessary jobs..... The most tragic thing is the school wanted science labs, about £50k per classroom. And out of the 8 rooms they're getting precisely zero science labs, because they 'can't afford' them...... Thankfully the new academy system addresses many of these issues but unfortunately my kids' schools are still LA controlled....
  21. Stick it on eBay, it'll find it's value, or check the completed listings to see what they made and adjust for age and condition.....
  22. Excellent post Geoff
  23. I'm more concerned about how local authorities are controlled. I have no real issue with military spending, it is what it is. Worcestershire sent someone out to my son's primary school to check bus passes the other day. Little things like that all over the country are what add up....
  24. Haven't watched it yet but have recorded the series, going to settle down to it one night when the wife is working.....
