  1. I always try to get loose, that way they are usually long enough in the body.
  2. Guy up the road brought his saw to me the other day with the same symptoms/cure, only difference being I had a really good laugh at his expense and don't intend to let him forget it
  3. Got a fully rigged 2 man fishing kayak, trying to work out how to get a small outboard on it as well

    ms250 has been withdrawn
  5. Is it a tree house? :001_tt2:
  6. Rob's your man
  7. Sounds like some great advise there. Think I will just have to try a few different things with my sharpening and do a lot more milling, no substitute for experience. Will rest the saw a bit more often I reckon and try to train myself to sharpen when it needs doing rather than when is convenient. Jon Glad you liked the extraction method, was a bit of an experiment but doing it this way meant I didn't have to rely on anyone else. 4.1m planks on a 2 foot barrow looked a bit weird though! 400 meters down over the field to the transit, worked a treat. Rob - looking forward to the video, they're really helpful
  8. Just what it feels like Spud Certainly giving the GHS pot and cylinder a really good work out! at one stage yesterday I used a full tank in one cut, but then I really should have stopped a while before and had a sharpen up
  9. Thanks for the replies all Looks like will be 6" with a 1" gap All I have to do now is mill 2 more 4 meter lengths, done 2 lots already. Tracked barrow has been a godsend on this job as the timber is up the hill quite a way. This is 7x1" boards and 2x2" All 4.1m long and up to 20" wide BTW spent a LOT of time yesterday just admiring the scenery
  10. Thanks for the replies Seems to confirm what I thought. Alec glad to hear you found spruce hard on the gear as I thought it was just me, had milled oak and elm before with no problems and was expecting to fly through the spruce. Keep on at your wife about the sharpener, they're great but I wasn't using it in the field this time as it would have meant taking a battery up the hill with me and I had enough gear with me already. Must pay more attention in future. Agree with you Rob, it seems amazing that there isn't some form of easily used and easily carried tool on the market, business opertunity for somebody.
  11. Hi all Been milling some spruce recently, large boards, 4m long and up to full width of the mill (30" bar giving about 24" cut) Been having a problem with the vibrations when I hit a knot. I am 100% sure this is due to my sharpening as it wasn't doing it on the first couple of cuts. I suspect that I may have taken the depth gauges down too far, would this cause vibrations? Any thoughts? Set up is MS650 with a Oregon 75RD chain. Some photos
  12. Building myself a log shed, 4 meter square, single pitch roof, 7' at the front dropping to 6' at the back. Doing this as cheaply as possible so have used old bt poles for the uprights and I'm milling the rest of the timber from some big spruce. So far I've milled about half the boards I should need, most are between 15"-23" wide. These will be ripped down on a saw bench. But to what width? I was thinking of 6" boards with a 2" air gap but not sure what the best combination of board/air gap is. What do you guys think?
  13. That's genius mate, great idea
  14. That sucks mate, hope they get you right soon. In the mean time keep posting
  15. Hi Jonesie Always makes me laugh when you refer to my postcode as exotic, you wouldn't call it that if you looked out the window tonight, lashing rain and wind approaching 40mph The best thing a supplier can offer me is a choice of delivery options but I imagine that just makes things even more complicated for you lot
  16. Postage to Highlands and Islands can be a real nightmare, I live on the isle of mull and when buying on line spend quite a lot of time looking for the best deal on postage. This generally means I'm looking for someone who uses Royal Mail as they charge the same for here as anywhere else. The other advantage of royal mail is they come here every day whereas the couriers tend to turn up only when they have a van full. Bought something off ebay the other day, advert stated it would be royal mail second class but because I "live on an isalnd" the seller decided to use a courier without asking me first, ended up taking 2 weeks to arrive. Felt like asking him whether he thought royal mail would have got to the ferry terminal and just thrown my package in the sea!
  17. Moved to the isle of mull nearly 3 years ago and put my mobile in a draw and never taken it out since. It takes a bit of doing but you can easily live without one, try it, it's a great feeling when you get used to it.
  18. can you put up a link for the sharpener please Don't worry, found it http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Fiskars-7861-Axe-and-Knife-Sharpener-NEW-/330698267075?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item4cff2719c3
  19. did exactly the same as agg221, runs the mill fine.
  20. Just read this, thanks for the tip will check mine in the morning

    Sunday milling

Thanks for the replies Bob - The bench is very stable at the moment, one thing I didn't mention is that it is bolted down to 2 small concrete pads just below the gravel this help with the stability but I mainly did it to stop it tipping forward which it wants to do if you sit in the middle as the seat bows outwards quite a bit . Roni - I'm on Mull, just over the water from you. Been out with the Alaskan again today, milling some lintels for the local estate. Pictures to follow if the estate manager sends them through.

    Sunday milling

Finally got round to having a play with some of this stuff, my first home made furniture. Thought I'd start with the garden bench, not so much of a problem if I messed up. So far it has just had a single coat of Linseed oil, not sure if that was the best idea, any suggestions for treatments? All comments good or bad welcome. And finally the view from the seat, yes I live in a great place
  23. The fiskars x27 is a splitting axe, using it to take out a stump around rocks would ruin it! (But it is an excellent axe though)
  24. same here - fiskars is a great axe
  25. I just use 3 screws with big washers straight through the tyre into the top of the block
