  1. Re. Selling butts, I was given a number of a guy who was after some oak. We had a 42' diam by 9 ft oak butt, about 2.5t he gave us £300 and arranged his own haulage....
  2. Depends what engine you get! Most transits only get a 90hp unit, the 140hp is very capable, you can get a 200hp too! Towing Capacity lets A Transit down, Iveco can usually tow 3500...
  3. And also it is approximately the same size as a Landrover 90!! The boys on the farm have a Kawasaki KLF300, in use nearly all day every day, feeding sheep mainly, always towing a trailer full of bales, never an ounce of trouble. I worked for a Suzuki dealership, the Eiger 400's were very nice, reliable and very comfy, Auto's very good but get a manual if you're spraying. I've never got on with Yamaha's, solid old nails of a machine was the old big bears, heavy to ride though.
  4. I've got an FS45 (nettle scarer) on the bench at the mo. Usual broken trigger and customer wants the muffler modding to fit a pipe on for smoking out rats!
  5. Has anyone got a fairly new (4 years old or newer) Hayter Lawnmower? They're all made in China.
  6. Is that just a 3003 fitment Stihl bar?
  7. This is an "Anti-Dieseling Valve" They are £100 to replace. Its not actually needed, all it does is blank the mainjet off when the ignition is cut so the engine cannot run on when the sparks have been cut. Snip the end of the plunger off with a hacksaw or cutting disc and replace it. Your engine will run perfect and you save £100 A "Vanguard" engine is just a model brand name used by Briggs and Stratton Usually Deonates that the engine is a v twin, has cast liners, fuel pump low oil cutoff etc etc.
  8. Jammy Git! You gotta have luck sometimes - thats what I keep telling myself!
  9. Most hours I've seen was a 20hp twin in a ride on mower, not very well looked after, had done over 1000 hours, ran ok but with a bit of blue smoke on startup. Seen one killed in 400 hours, never had an oil change, new crank and rods please!
  10. My whippet sleeps on the end of my bed, always clean, no trouble. Mum and dads whippet has its own sleeping bag at the end of their bed, it takes itself to bed and gets in it, then stays there in the morning until it hears its breakfast being served!
  11. Stihl 056 runs a 36" bar with little trouble, old and heavy, but NO plastic.
  12. I don't own a file for .404... Yet!
  13. Well done and I wish you best of luck. Your chemical addiction is over after 7 days, anything after that is habit...
  14. Oh lordy! That looks nice! Want one! The exhaust does look a bit vulnerable to me though.
  15. I have bags of split willow, very very dry. Cannot sell them - can't give them away! Is burning lovely on the open fire at home, hardly a spit or a pop!
  16. I enjoy hand filing chains, but doing the 114dl chains on the 36" bar gets very boring. I spent a fair amount of time sharpening chains with a professional Stihl chain grinder in a past job, was taught how to set it up and use it correctly. I've transfereed this experience over to getting the best out of the £24 Silverline chain grinder I purchased, I couldn't justify spending much on a machine that wouldn't see much use, sure its cheap and flimsy, but with a tiny bit of care we produce a lovely sharp and even chain. I hit a bit of metal in a big stem with the 36" machine, chain was the most horrendous mess, did a double grind on it with the machine and its back in action - just!
  17. Yes, the 029 was actually branded a "Farm Boss" Its a heavily built reliable saw aimed at farmers or estates, its designed to be able to bounce about in the back of a pickup or tractor bucket all day and to to the odd days tree work - thats why its so heavy. Stihl MS260/026 all the way for me, light powerful. Proven.
  18. Sure, found some pics. She's been on ripping duty this week to make some big rings easier to handle and split. Running like a good'un!

    Chains Direct

I use chains direct for loops and bars - knocks the socks off my Stihl dealers prices! But they are expensive on anything that isn't a bar and chain!

    big bars

I've got a 36" Oregon Powermatch on my 056 - It has plenty of power but I wouldn't really want to go any bigger, I enjoy not having to go in from both sides when ringing up big timber, mainly because I'm not very good at it!
  21. Bit far for me to come. Sorreh.
  22. I blame illness over christmas on the fact that we go shopping in big shops and shopping centres in high temperature and humid conditions with jostling crowds, with people sneezing and coughing everywhere. If you work outside all day, mainly on your own IE processing firewood, you're not used to being exposed to such germy conditions. A friend of mine is a farmer, every time he goes into town shopping (not often, thats what wife is for!) he comes back with a cold!
  23. I have a 2009 MS260, bought it used, cheaps. I too thought it was squishy! so much so I fitted new AV rubbers. It didn't make much difference! That would suggest you are using lots of fuel? as I need to refill oil tanks on every tank of fuel on all my saws. Take it from me as a Stihl trained horticultural mechanic, run the machine at full throttle when cutting. Have a read of a Stihl Chainsaw owners manual, very informative when it comes to cutting and machine use.
