  1. 400 quid.
  2. Did you return it? If not how much are you are for the SA80 and bullets? Been looking for one of these for a while.
  3. Yes you can use a fig 8. However unless its a huge (by british standards) descent it's not going to be worth your while. I'm not sure if posting links to another arb forum is allowed, and it probably is so I won't put a link. But if you google "how to use a figure of 8 trees" the first link will show you with pictured and plenty of explanation how to do it. Also if your gonna get one I'm told the square ones are best. But I've never used a square one so might be talking rubbish.
  4. How the hell would you fell the first tree in the photos with a chainsaw? Anyone know what the biggest bar made which a modern saw can run is?
  5. So the only thing that's certain is to use common sense then. Only the police can stop traffic... But if you have to, just do it anyway
  6. It was a one hour job. If I'd have called the council I'd have had to wait for them to turn up, and it would have been a headache. I'm not happy about standing there telling people if they can stop or go though. I'm just an ordinary member of the public, I dont see what right I have to dictate to people.
  7. Had a job a couple of months ago where a tree had fallen into the road, as it's a regular customer of mine (we do all the maintenance for her) she called us. Obviously all I had was hi vis as I didn't know it was going to happen. Please turned up and asked us what was going on... As soon as I suggested they might like to do the traffic management for us, they said they were very busy got the in the car and drove off sharpish. I was kind of annoyed because I think in those situations it would have been safer and easier for them to stick a car either side and done the donkey work.
  8. I know about applying to have a road closed. I just wondered about the stop and go boards. Can anyone who choses stop traffic?
  9. Actually - what is the law regarding this? I know everyone does stop traffic when they need to. But are you allowed? I mean whats the situation if someone ignores you and you has an accident? OR if the police decided to get funny about it, is it legit? Thanks
  10. whats the problem? just charge alot more to do the work, as you will have to rig everything. I see no downside.
  11. Def get a pantin mate, I used one from a guy who works for me. Makes long ascents a doddle. I don't think I'd use it on 90 percent of trees at work, but for the price it's def something to have in the bag.
  12. I'm not being funny, but if someone told me they knew and didn't tell me about a load of sharps on the ground where I was working I'd punch them in the mouth. Unless they were in a wheelchair, then I'd just be verbally abusive and tell them to find someone else to work for them. Also if you have got anything which is very unlikely go to the police and have him charged with gbh.
  13. Good. I will do, but given I've had no training in this kit and no one around here uses any of it I'd rather ask a few questions before I use it to hang at 90 foot.
  14. No that makes perfect sense thanks. Just trying to work out how it works in case I was doing something wrong. When you release the handle and wooden brake, do you find you have to push the handle back up, or does it happen automatically for you? Because the one I have does seem to catch but only after a fe seconds and I'm not very happy free falling for that long.
  15. If your worried go to the docs... No one is going to be able to tell you if you've had a jab with a sharp or not. There are antiviral drugs or something they can give you which help to stop you catching HIV but beer talk tells me they are only given to NHs staff or the police due to cost...
  16. Thanks I've seen that video... It was one of the main reasons I chose to buy the gear. But when he demonstrates moving out just a bit the spider jack seems to sort of have a cranking noise... Where is that coming from, I mean what part does he press to release it like that. All I can work out to do is to pull the handle just a little bit. But tht doesn't seem to give you much control. I might just be being blonde today...
  17. So what should I expect? I'm using a prussik, but after speaking the accountant it turned out that he thinks I should spend some money so I have done. Admittedly I got the sj last week from matt buttler on here, havnt used it yet though. So, any tips on how I should start of on this? Also from taking the sj apart whats the point in the spring part? Sorry if I'm being daft here, but dont get what its there for... And from dicking about in my garden and looking at the video, to release it just a bit on branch walks what part do you press? Sorry if it's been done before, just looking for advise from going from mr basic, to mr shiney stuff. I'm sure other people on here might be thinking about the big switch so it will be helpful. Yep - so thanks in advance, and awaiting some abuse.
  18. What age is it? what bar has it got? whats the chain and bar like? and have you got any pictures? you can't expect people to spend loads of wonga without knowing the basics.
  19. Good, then we agree.
  20. Are they going to prosecute for removing a laurel hedge?
  21. Would you "trim", which by my definition is removing parts of, a tree without notifying? I don't want to be pedantic. But if you want to call a hedge a tree, you have to play by those rules.
  22. If you were "maintaining" a tree by removing parts of it, in a conservation area would you notify? If it's a tree its a tree. You cant decide what you notify depending how you feel about the works.
  23. It's not. Hedging tree's can be covered, shrubs can't. Next time you speak to him, ask him how many prosecutions he's done. Do you give notice to trim hedges in your conservation areas?
  24. Guys... come on. Do you give 6 weeks notice to trim hedges in conservation areas? A laurel hedge is definitely not a tree!
  25. You havn't been offered a job then. You've been offered a chance to be a subcontractor. Funding wise, I don't think there is any... Unless your under 25 or something and can get princess trust funding. As far as what you need to do, well that depends on how you want to set yourself up. I'm guessing your going to be a sole trader. If that's the case you need to notify HMRC and start paying self employed national insurance. That's it. Unless you are planning on doing your own jobs and employ people.
