Oils are much better at bringing out colours than varnish. Depending on application I use linseed, tung or danish oil. James -
I got a very similar stihl mill with two 051 on it. Works well. Only used on one big lime so far so not the best test. Just ordered a 24" Alaskan from rob d to do a load of smaller stuff I have. Will run that on one of the 051s too.

Thats what im questioning, its 20miles from me, if its cheap is it worth the punt, its old so i reckon it riddled right through, or will it just be the ends? Still dont know.

To be honest a large amount of species are mildly carcinogenic, yew is one of the worst, some people come out in a rash when working it. Id try turning it with a good mask on and see how you go. More info here http://arbtalk.co.uk/forum/milling-forum/52536-yew-chopping-boards.html. James

Evening, Found this pear on ebay that i put the opening bid on, been outbid and was considering how much i was willing to pay so has a close look at the photo. The end grain appears to be absolutely riddled with worm holes, im guessing its firewood. second opinion if you dont mind. Got a dead yew on the property, that died due to a drain collapse and some flooding. Been dead 2 years now. keep meaning to take it down and mill it, but how long have i realistically got before the timber starts to deteriorate. Thanks guys James:thumbup:

The yew block he's had on there for at least a year, he's not far from the in laws, and I offered him £20 for it(what its worth). The message he sent back was far from courteous!

No the glass was flat on the wood, anything you try to space it with will appear as a blemish and detract from the finish. Make sure when you get the glass made that you explain that it has to be exact size as most glass cutters work to +/- 3mm.

Had a customer once who had oak table with rosewood inlay, wanted glass fitting to top, fitted oak bead round edge to contain glass and refinished table. Think slack bladder is right. Expensive and heavy. If thats what the customer wants then that's what they get. Look for a small glass wholesaler near you, not your local glazing shop. Wouldn't be. Concerned with dust etc. But do have to make sure top is cock on flat. In sure that's no problem for a man of your calibre. James

Thanks guys, I've done the edges already. Mixture of large and small drawknife and spoke shave. Then radial sanders. Didn't take too long. I think id need to have some serious shaping to do to spend 100 on one of them and I'm not really into carving. Well done on show clive great news. Got a two week show starting on 9th of June I'm getting prepared for. Bit if a strange one but should be ok. Bucks open studios. From home. With 6 other different artists/crafters. All peeps I live with. Fingers crossed.

Ok I checked out the turbo plane and it looks good, does it come out of the box enough to justify the £100 price tag? And clive, your right it is oak,blushing, goes to show, just coz somethings written down, doesn't mean its right, now I question if the countless other species I got from him are labelled correctly.

Thanks clive. These are two more of the boards from the gun stock maker. Has yew chalked on end grain, and bark looks like yew, but you are right it does look oakey... May have to do a proper i.d. on it later. Thanks for advice. Off to Google what a turboplane is.

Got these two bits of yew Gunna make a few bits with them and want to leave a waney edge., but what's the best way to remove bark an tidy up sap wood. Thanks. James

No you got that wrong mate, i may look like a hippy, but i just cant afford a haircut on my pitiful builders wage. As for the berlingo wish i had gone charcoal powered, but when i heard about global warming, thought solar powered was the way, how wrong was i. Im currently converting it to foot power like the flintstones. Do you know where i can get the feet from?:dontknow:
