  1. Do you not think it Looks too shaded to ever be a proper hedge again?
  2. I've just come back from the Black Isle, where I do some christmas tree work in November. They sold over 500.000 trees this season, with about 15-20% growth in numbers each year.... A lot of the "art" is in pruning, spraying against aphids, leader selection/ retarding/ encouragement and finally quality selection and marketing. The rest of the operation is not simple, but does not require much specialist knowledge.
  3. I really need this to clean the gutters on my bungalow but according to my wife it would not fit beside the house to reach the back so she says I'm not allowed it:thumbdown: May be of interest to someone else? 4. I might be interested in some of the timber, I would be able to mill it as well but it does depend somewhat on where it is exactly. Daniel
  5. Should...? Why do you think they're that expensive? Every pair sold earns me a tenner!
  6. Mr Bolam: you cannot feel the steel threads at all, and I've never found them to be too cold.
  7. I'd have one...
  8. It's a measure of hardness on the Rockwell scale, higher number=Harder steel. http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rockwell_scale
  9. I've spoken to my friend the butcher about this. The above is Not a butchers' block.... A proper butchers' block is constructed so you use it "on the end grain" so with all the bits of wood standing on end. It's also supposed to have squares of wood, arranged in a clever way so that no matter how hard the cleaver cleaves, a forced split can not "run". (I believe it's achieved by turning the squares so the curves of their grain are "back to back"?) It needs to be used on the end grain as this protects the finely honed edge of the butchers' knife/cleaver. as it comes down, the end grain can part slightly to accommodate the edge where a cut onto a "sideways grain" board would blunt the blade far quicker. According to my friend the butcher...
  10. Whereabouts?
  11. It's quite bad form to assume things like you are doing in the above post in my opinion. So he/she sells cheap logs, of species that many people see as inferior, but how is that any different from selling B&Q brand chainsaws? Yes it's cheap, and it may or may not be of a lesser quality but that doesn't make it wrong to sell the product does it? I'd imagine Waitrose are happy to have the likes of tescos value to compete with, it makes the contrast starker. Same thing with logs, if you intend to sell a premium product for a premium price, you'll do better if the customer has tried an inferior product first/as well.
  12. There is place for both tesco value and waitrose finest on the highstreet, I know what I'd rather have.
  13. "Large loads if hardwood (changed to soft a post or two later) processed or not" Reads to me like he wants firewood, logs or cord?
  14. Thought about this for a second, I'd make them smaller for fear of having too much leverage? It's only plastic it's attached too after all and spikes so big could exert enough force to snap that plastic after not much work?
  15. Nice effort Pete, I like the ingenuity. As for overloading the saw: ofcourse you can't stall it, it has a centrifugal clutch? You can burn that clutch though... If you've found it's better for you this way then that's great, but I reckon you ought to look at your sharpening technique. If it's useable with teeth like that you must have a blunt chain?
  16. As perfect boards are not an issue for you, but production speed is, could you mount a circular saw just ahead of the band, on the "in-going" side? You could mount it on a spring loaded pivot so it follows the log and set it so it cuts just bark. Could be done cheaply and circular saw blades are not too expensive and easy to change. This is presuming all the while that most wear/damage is from where the band meets grit as it goes into the log?
  17. The tensioner has a conical pin. If you adjust the chain tension and then tighten the nuts whilst they were still fairly loose, it forces the fatter part of the pin in more which tightens the chain more. So you need to only have the bar nuts just loose enough to be able to move the bar enough to adjust it.
  18. EPIC But could you not have felled it straight into the chipper?
  19. I went out at half four to check on some stock. Walked back up home and it rained so hard, never seen ought like it. Not too much wind, but two inches of rain in half an hour or so.
  20. Should that read the old Chinese art of ratatouille?
  21. Just drill it through and put a bolt+wingnut on it. Or find a stick of the right size and shape.
  22. Is that an action shot of the process of felling a tree onto a police van?
  23. A beetle is a hand tool much like a mallet. Used for driving wooden stakes into the ground when hedgelaying.
  24. I'd pay you a pint and a packet of crisps for a stick of 10"dia or more by at least four foot, for making beetle heads. But only if you were on my way anyway.
