  1. It was the leaf-scar that gave me the clue, bit daft it took so long really as I've one less than ten foot away from me now!
  2. Is it a Paulownia?
  3. Surely it's a question of supply and demand? As most people want to be off for christmas, the supply of tree-surgeons is limited so the price is high (as high as you like really, there is always somebody else they could phone) In my opinion to compare this to a disaster situation where supply is normal but demand is exceptionally high due to nature having a hissy fit is like comparing eggs to airplanes.
  4. I drive past Nunspeet (where their nursery is) a few times a year. In fact if you'd posted the above a little earlier I might have been able to help (maybe there is time still?) as my brother will be coming this way on the 28th with an empty car and likely an empty 20ft trailer. You're not too far off-route from Harwich to Lincs are you? There is no such thing as boxing day in the Netherlands -though a lot of people take the day off- and the 27th is a normal working day. May be able to save you some pennies?
  5. As I come across a fair bit of dog rose, in similar sizes to mentioned above I had a look into that. The wood used for pipe-bowls is "briarwood" the roots from a tree heather "Erica arborea" which has nothing at all to do with dog rose. Which is confusing enough as the word "briar" is used for dog rose, bramble and apparently also for the genus "smilax" (which I've never heard of). Which leads us back to the starting point where it seems there is no use for the wood of the dog rose? I've used it to make sticks as it's quite light yet fairly strong and remains somewhat springy, but no other uses that I've heard of:confused1:
  6. Like that?
  7. You're missing a socket! how can you sleep at night, knowing there is that void on your bench?
  8. Please don't think I'm doubting your figures, but down to less than 20% in three days? really? I would have laughed out loud at the person telling me they could do it, and financially viable as well. Does the wood not "case harden" when dried so quickly, or re-absorb moisture from the air at a much higher rate after it comes out?
  9. Good Latin skills, now with the reading glasses on:001_tt2:: Dog Rose: Rosa Canina..
  10. Yep, just like that. Though I'm mildly confused they're selling a trailer with a bed lenght of more than 8m as I thought the max allowed was 7m. (not really relevant as the one I was looking at is 6.5, this one:
  11. Hi all, wondering what your thoughts were on a turntable trailer. I'm thinking of getting one from either the Netherlands or Germany, 6m bed length, 2.4m wide. about 850kg empty. I move a lot of hedging stakes and binders, bundles up to 18ft long and it would be great to be able to have a stack of stakes and a stack of binders separately on the trailer rather than one on top of the other. It'll be right handy when moving hay, would take a few bales... I also intend to do a bit more building/ timber framing / sawmilling sort of work where I reckon being able to move a 30ft beam could prove quite handy. It's far nicer to tow as no nose weight, no snaking/wobbles, meaning I could tow it with the car (1600kg tow cap) ocasionally when needed rather than the landy. I can get a reasonable one for similar money as a 10-15 year old fairly knackered IW 16ft flatbed. Now I know it's a little trickier to reverse but I've been able to reverse turntables without much problems for the last 25-odd years behind the tractor so that should be ok. But I don't know of anyone here in the UK that uses one, why not? I know they're legal as some were made by bateson a while ago. So why oh why not? what am I missing?
  12. I've been a very good boy this year, so I got myself a MS880 with 46" Sugi.
  13. Search button broken on your machine? http://arbtalk.co.uk/forum/general-chat/892-weight-wood-chip.html
  14. Postcode correction...
  15. Don't you ever get bored of going on and on and on about this? Please don't be offended, it's a genuine curiosity that makes me wonder if you spend this much time moaning (is there a more descriptive/less offensive word?) during your working day and if so, how much earlier you'd have the job done if you'd just keep queit and get on with it?
  16. I've had that a few (...) times, once that exact scenario played out in front of the police station, the car was a police car and about a foot shorter by the time I'd stopped. I pulled into the police carpark, ready for a good bollocking, the driver got out (furious and near boiling point) and was about to start laying into me when about a dozen other police came out the building roaring with laughter. They'd seen it all from the canteen and proceeded with a generous and lengthy piss-taking of the driver whilst one of them got me a coffee and cake to "recover from the shock".
  17. All right, 'fess up: who donated the dirty book trilogy? (My wife wants it...)
  18. Do you not think it Looks too shaded to ever be a proper hedge again?
  19. I've just come back from the Black Isle, where I do some christmas tree work in November. They sold over 500.000 trees this season, with about 15-20% growth in numbers each year.... A lot of the "art" is in pruning, spraying against aphids, leader selection/ retarding/ encouragement and finally quality selection and marketing. The rest of the operation is not simple, but does not require much specialist knowledge.
  20. I really need this to clean the gutters on my bungalow but according to my wife it would not fit beside the house to reach the back so she says I'm not allowed it:thumbdown: May be of interest to someone else? 21. I might be interested in some of the timber, I would be able to mill it as well but it does depend somewhat on where it is exactly. Daniel
  22. Should...? Why do you think they're that expensive? Every pair sold earns me a tenner!
  23. Mr Bolam: you cannot feel the steel threads at all, and I've never found them to be too cold.
  24. I'd have one...
  25. It's a measure of hardness on the Rockwell scale, higher number=Harder steel. http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rockwell_scale
