  1. Ford Ranger Supercab. 07 plate and going fine after the engine rebuild last year (touch wood). Enough room for the kids in the back, they love the suicide doors. Or my climbing kit sits there, with the seat pads up, while the mucky stuff goes under the MountainTop lid. Decent ground clearance too.
  2. That's fine for occasional work, but if you are working constantly for the same guy then you are "employed" by him and he has obligations in terms of PAYE, NIC's and pension rights. The HMRC website has an anonymous tick test that shows whether you are a sub-contractor or employed. I work regularly for the same firm, but because I use ONLY my own equipment and I dictate how the task is carried out, I sit in the "sub-contractor" box.
  3. Cut a Laurel hedge today down to 7ft. What a distinctive smell from the chipping. No sore head though, although I was wary.
  4. You've done bloody well mate. My Missus thinks you're a star. Zigzag 2 .... You jammy git. Miss my zigzag every climb. I'll hoist a Scotch for you on Friday. Jim
  5. That's a gobsmacking statement.
  6. Definitely. My wife has taught primary for over 20 years. She was pulling her hair out with some of the guidance from above. A lot of which she ignored when it came to spelling and also memorising the times tables. How frustrating it must be to be aware your writing skills aren't up to scratch, but want to express yourself clearly.
  7. You're right Rich, but remember that diagnosed dyslexics get support and a certain amount of leeway in their written work. They are not penalised for poor spelling. What I think we must be careful of is that the forum is not seen as elitist. It's such a welcoming group. I would hate to think that a youngster would be discouraged from asking a question because his spelling and grammar are poor. There was an era in education when learning spelling was not encouraged, with other areas of the curriculum given greater importance. Children are reading less too, visual games replacing books. The more you read, the more the correct spelling sinks in. Like I said above, I'm not a fan of textspeak. However I do understand that for some children, whose education was ineffective for whatever reason, it's the only method of written communication they know.
  8. No, it's a reason. Not an excuse. Acceptance of phonetic spelling by colleges when assessing written work has to be one of the biggest flaws ever in our education system. It lets young men and women out into the real world with atrocious writing skills. Anyone who attempts to get their point across without using textspeak is ok in my book. If the moderators are tidying up thread titles then that is a great thing. Bad spellers aren't thick either. They've just missed out somewhere along their educational road. Guide and educate. Don't take the p1ss.
  9. I'm with you Billibigtree just on safety grounds. Giving someone a condemned harness and kit is a bit like putting a loaded gun in a child's hands. Especially when you know the people you are selling to have no idea/interest about LOLER. In terms of gaining work though, you just have to sell yourself properly.
  10. I reckon it's an event that Arbtalk would be welcome at. It's a nice wee show with a fair number of stands alongside the carving area. Maybe think about it for next year, Steve?
  11. The 560 is great too, but if you're using a 13"/15" bar on your 346 just now for forestry/woodland snedding up, then its a 550 all the way. If you use 15" mainly and could make use of 18" more often, then the 560. The little bit of extra weight on the 560 does tell on you at the end of a long day snedding, which is why my mate's looking at a 550 to back up his 560.
  12. Outstanding! No other words for it.
  13. Stihl, Husky, Stihl, Husky...... Laugh. I bought the 550XPG to back up my 346XP. One of the earlier ones and I had a couple of issues. Brake band snapped (early known fault, with the part now upgraded by Husky). Warm starts could be grumpy as hell. Still are occasionally. But when it's cutting, it's an absolute belter. Love it every bit as much as my 346 (which I wouldn't part with anyway). It's a great little animal of a saw.
  14. Northern Exposure was excellent. The piano launch on his trebuchet was genius. My Missus and I watched it religiously. Watched Conspiracy Theory last night, Mel Gibson and Julia Roberts. Good wacky film. Definitely a feel good movie.
  15. Looking at the stump, you could have back cut that with a MS150! Great pics.

    Heights

I'm finding now that that is my favourite bit. It's usually a chance to get a really cracking view of the scenery up here. I CANNOT climb on rock though. AT ALL.
  17. Swapped between my husky ground helmet today and the Protos while I was crosscutting, since I had been giving it some thought since this thread started. Quite honestly I found no difference in sound reduction. The big difference is in comfort.
  18. The pressure of the ear defenders against your head is adjustable, slack defs are next to useless regardless of make. But even so, I wouldn't wear it next to a chipper all day. If I'm doing that I throw a Husky helmet on. For chainsaw noise I've not found it a problem at all.
  19. At £183 you'd be bloomin lucky to get one for more than a days trial. Love mine. From using a Petzl Vertex Vent to this. The Petzl now feels sloppy on my head in comparison, and a bit unwieldy. Very comfortable. Easy enough to adjust. Much less snagging on small limbs with the ear defenders sliding into the lid. The other plus point is you get to look like a Power Ranger!
  20. Yes you can. And it's safe fuel to use in your Focus TDCi too. Just rinse it with road fuel every now and again to wash out the colour.
  21. The Haix protector extreme have a small studded plate mid-sole that can be removed.
  22. My mate wants to buy my 346. I'm not budging from £1500 though :-)
