  1. Cheers boys. Will pass on info.
  2. Totally agree. Snowberry seems pretty immune even with rabbits living beneath. Excellent at stopping erosion too, BUT as above.
  3. I have a mate who wants to get his basic chainsaw tickets in the Scotch Corner/ Barnard Castle area (N Yorks/County Durham). Anyone know where/who?
  4. Ammonium sulphamate breaks down to ammonium sulphate/sulphate of ammonia which is inded a fert.
  5. Why horses? Never seems to be other livestock (if that is the correct phrase??)
  6. koi bonsai.................cant even begin to imagine:lol:
  7. Pick your pathway through, identify the large local bramble rootstocks, chop-em then do a spot application of amonium sulphamate:confused1:
  8. Surely a 20 kg sack of wood, whatever the species at a similar MC has a similar calorific value? (so I would seriously doubt that the moisture in our rubbish firewood would triple/quadruple its weight) Rest of it sounds like 'green-wash'. I think this is where I am meant to rattle on about the global price of oil being too cheap AGAIN...............
  9. What did your terrier think? (As an aside, I was on a shoot on saturday when a rabbit comes running along the road towards me, persued by a stoat. My German wire-haired pointer goes after rabbit, my lab goes after stoat. Lab gets to stoat who screams and just manages to escape into hole in wall. Lab sniffs and makes to leave, at which point the rabbit, still being persued by GWP, dodges lab and enters same hole in wall as stoat. Would love to have heard their conversation:lol:)
  10. As well as all the other predators. Handy things gamekeepers. What we really need is video evidence of rabbits eating grouse. That would solve the problem, there would hardly be a rabbit in the Dales:lol:
  11. They are not so much taking refuge in riverbanks as actively house hunting there. Probably to do with the fact all other grassland is heavily grazed. There is a lot more cover on the banks. The recent floods did clear a fair few out but 48hrs later the riverside warrens were occupied again. As for mink, very rare hereabouts thankfully. Odd otters you see!
  12. Not wrong but I thought all willows had it, wiki seems to confirm:confused1: Salicylic acid - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia The little darlings nibble all my other willows given the chance:cussing:
  13. Will have a try with coppicing some bits of alder, see if our buns have similar tastes to yours.
  14. Welcome to Swaledale life. ALL the riverbanks I deal with (a few miles worth) have thriving rabbit populations, and they are THE major factor in bank erosion. All plantings have to be protected which is obviously a problem when they are likely to be submerged in a raging torrent. Similar problems with coppicing the riverside trees, which is traditional on the Swale, bunnies eat buds!
  15. We have an awful lot of buns up here in Swaledale, possibly because of our dry stone walls being a very safe place for them, and its not possible to gas/trap/ferret walls. We do shoot though. So not easier. Cheaper????? well once a stock of willow is established it is very easy and cheap to take cuttings etc.
  16. :laugh1:Plant it up with ragwort:lol:
  17. I had a meeting with a National Park bod yesterday regarding flood damage to our local riverbanks. A fair bit of this has been aided by our furry friends' annoying habits of digging holes, and nibbling off any regen. Apparently one local chap (sadly recently deceased) had found that Salix purpurea was left alone by the bunnies as it doesn't taste too good to them. Does anyone know more/any different on this?
  18. It may be possible to use a proxy server here in the UK. Anyone any more info on this????

    Otters

    Brilliant.
  20. Floods AGAIN.
  21. Betcha could make an educated guess:biggrin:

    Mr Humphries

If it EVER STOPS RAINING I will get some pix done.

    Mr Humphries

Do I take it you want pix of trees damaged (and healed/healing)? Lots of ash with years of sheep damage to base which I can pop on if you wish.
  24. Correct. No malice was meant or intended. Sorry you read it like that. Someone elses pertinent song lyrics. Especially....."and its not the worst crime i'll agree". Not a crime at all, just something which I see as totally pointless to which comments like...."it sort of looks like... etc" only add credence. My wife thinks i'm odd too:laugh1:
  25. From: Half Man Half Biscuit: Paradise Lost (You're The Reason Why) - lyrics Half Man Half Biscuit: Paradise Lost (You're The Reason Why) - lyrics Sorry to be so negative about something so seemingly inconsequential, just one of my pet hates, summed up perfectly by Nigel Blackwell (above). Its the fact that generally hardworking blokes (and bloke-esses) can be parted from their 'hard-earned' so easily because of gullibility. Probably best if I quit here!
