  1. You must be wondering how you coped with out it.
  2. Yes I agree- there is plenty wrong with a defender- but what they do have right is the robustness of the Diffs/drivetrain/chassis etc, the bits that really count if your doing heavy towing- but fairly certain I won’t be able to convince Big J to buy a defender!
  3. J- would a Discovery 3/4 Commercial not fit the bill? I think you can put commercials through for tax.. good for towing- headroom etc?
  4. Are they? From what I can tell the Musso is only 2.2L where’s for £32k you can have the 3.2L engine? Personally I think buying new trucks is a good way to lose money- but can see appeal with warranty and not buying someone else’s previous problems. 3.2L in the ranger that is.
  5. Although keeping thread on track- for £25k+ it’s not vastly cheaper than Toyota/Nissan etc which will hold their value better, more secure dealer network(?)
  6. In fairness Big J does have a point- from a purely practical point the roads are largely dreadful and unfit for modern traffic. But I’d still argue my point in the other thread that this is the price we pay for living in a relatively unspoilt area, however in my view the areas where they ‘improved’ the road systems it has changed the whole area, brought more houses with it, or maybe the houses brought the roads, isolated and fragmented communities- personally happy to put up with the bad roads if that is the bottleneck in development.
  7. I found parish magazines provided a good return- cheap and gives the impression your local/part of the parish/not some fly by nighter. never done Facebook, but did have a website, and truck signage which obviously goes everywhere with you. Word of mouth mainly for me now but as Mick says that comes once you have got your name out there.
  8. Could this not happen any way? What if you maim someone in a car accident an insurance doesn’t pay out?
  9. I just use a stumpy tow ball fitted to Clevis bar. It says 2000kg but there’s more steel involved then the Dixon Bates which is 3500kg on my landy so I’m not worried. The only problem you might find is that the drawbar on the tractor is higher than truck plus the fact that there is no suspension on a tractor so harsher on the ifor hitch and more weight transferred to rear axle of trailer.
  10. I only work on my own so don’t bother with uniform- just work gear. However for a team I agree that a uniform looks more professional- to an extent at least- too much slickness puts me off a company
  11. Until you replace it one day and then go why didn’t I do this when I first got it!?
  12. Spend a few Grand on tidying up that 1056 and you’ll have a tractor that I doubt will loose a penny...
  13. Same tractor as my Same dorado 86 I think- pocket rockets- power to weight nothing will touch them!
  14. I had a go in a 956xl recently, it had done fairly high hours (9k I think) and the gear box was the sweetest, smoothest thing i have ever encountered in a tractor. Other things which I liked were amazing turning circle particular given the long 6 cylinder wheelbase, and the engine was a beaut too. However hydraulics are poor in them. Think 956 and 1056 are both getting good money if they are in tidy condition.
  15. May I ask why you’ve left the strings long on the SG- I can’t even look at them! nice strat BTW- it was a toss up for me between a strat and the ibanez I posted above- think the strat will be next- after the Gibson Les Paul junior I have my eye on!
  16. Buzzards can take hens- I’ve just started keeping hens myself (only 3 at the mo) but the only way I really felt safe keeping them was to build a totally enclosed run with an 8” board buried below ground. Granted it’s only a 3m x 3m run so much easier but I think I’d do the same even for a large run/ fit and forget...
  17. Battery’s? Yeah I know- you can’t do proper work with batteries- but if even 30% of your work can be just as easily done with a battery saw, you’ll have 30% less fumes, you’ll probably save £500 in fuel every year. Put that towards Aspen for the rest of your work, win win?
  18. Yeah I have a Korean built RG270dx which I bought in 2002- thought the neck was thin on that but this new prestige model with 5 piece neck is thinner still-17mm at 1st. I get a weird RSI thing in my left hand- slight pins and needles etc after playing for long periods but it’s not so bad with Ibanez necks for some reason.
  19. And my Martin 000-16GT.
  20. Just bought this Ibanez RG 652 Prestige, with a nice Ash body and Birdseye maple neck, RGs are normally considered hard rock/metal guitars, but can get all sorts of tone from this, it’s beautifully versatile with the DiMarzio pickups and build quality is absolutely superb- well chuffed.
  21. She sounds like a barrel of laughs!
  22. Why over double for an extra man?
  23. Even if you only tow 3.5 ton. Surely it’s better to use a downrated larger truck than squeeze the life out of a 3.5t truck. I assume there is no need for any operators license etc either...
  24. It can be hard to switch out of work- and that’s probably a good thing as ultimately it means we enjoy our jobs and holidays aren’t the be all and end all which might be the case if your cooped up in an office or factory all day. However I do try and have time away with wife and daughter and they really needn’t be abroad, some of the most relaxing holidays we’ve had have been less than 100 miles away from where I live in Devon. We go to Dorset, Cornwall, next week we’re off to Exmoor area. For me the the long car journeys to airports- airport queses, (hate flying too) general hassle and organising of foreign holidays takes some of the joy away from the occasion.
