1. Wanted Tom sawyer/ think made by forrestor? horizontal mill, would consider another make of large ish capacity horizontal, but struggling to keep up with milling and wanted a large capacity wide band mill. pm or phone 07500892324
2. guliet were very good mills, better/ heavier built than stenner.
3. i've had racks for years and still run two a fixed and a mobile. weight wise it depends on construction but dismantled our timber stenner 4 one would be under 3ton, or go in bits on an ifor, my fixed all steel/ iron smith peace one is around 7 but has a 30 foot steel table and i've cut 38 foot on it before with care. both will take up to 6 foot yankee blades. we run with either steam or tractor 135hp tw via a slip clutch and shear bolt.
4.

no problem, its [email protected]

if its only coming from arley i think i could probably get our ford tractor out with a trailer provided you could load me!

5.
i'd be interested in some oak saw logs, what sort of size/ spec are they? had some off NT at brockhampton nice big ones but knew how to charge... really after 2-4' dia to plank and air dry for joinery or some beaming timber

6. what for, brewing i e holding liquid? if so yes i've built some and barrels, but it doesn't come cheap!
7. well thats a difficult one, but to pay for one person semi skilled or better, you need to bring in around 25-30k just to pay their wages plus machinery kit depresiation etc, going on a friends fathers estate in scotland they reconed around 200 acres per person in the woods, would just about brake even, now admittedly if your in marketing then you may be able to skew it by producing somthing high end. nichy but either way when you get to turn round/ cost of kit and felling densities its not practical, thats why theyre offering grants as theres no money in it on its own, likewise the grants aren't enough to pay for stuff, just an insentive to encourage, if folks were making lots of money out of grants then they'd be stopped or altered as the money would run out too quick.
8. give me a shout. might be able to help. 07500892324
9. woodland of that size isn't commercially viable as a stand alone business, certainly you'd be eligable for grants but not much else, we've some neighbours trying to do similar on 20 acres which theyre living and building in now bought it on bad advise 20 acres for over 100k on the basis they could live in it without planning provided they worked it.
10. if you get a funny chap called vincent from essex emailing you i told him you had some tasty elm....
11. yeah i know i was just scouring my emails for it, we're going to send a lad who works for us on one soon, chris allen, go drive, 07715 297812
12. theres a chap in wolvo does a crash course, my mrs had to do one... very good around 450£ all done in a day...
13. yes for moving our steam engine about, you'd struggle doing it in connection with your work though as your not doing it for free, its a dodgey area, if its hire or reward and your taking money for a job, then you can't do it under personal use. still need tested trailer etc but operator exempt, plus you still have to keep tachos, i know a man who'd know more than me as he runs wagons proffesionally but also one for personal, which is also tricky.
14. wanted ash buts for milling, perferably straight no brown ash, up to 18 foot lengths, 18" to 36" diameter. preferably as close as possible, i have a wheelwright wants some. pm / 07500892324 if you have anything suitable.
15. las time any one brought me a tree to mill it was some boney old oak and as hard as iron, itd been down since the gales in 87, any way i cut it into 3 inch planks 10 foot or so long, he got around 2 ton of them in a day, for 360£, 300 for me and the mill, £60 quid diesel for tractor and our forklift. that was a couple of years ago mind, i think it would be nearer 400 now.
16. very interesting reading, i'm not sure i can make our ancient machine conform to everything included in there, but certainly has its uses, even as suggested improvments.
17. rayburn is ok but beware the quality and support we've only just got ours back on line after a boiler burst just over a year in. not great for a 5k appliance. that said i'd still say its better than an esse, more kw than anything else not so fussy on fuel, and bits aren't expensive or hard to get, the 355 sfw are the ford of the solid fuel cookers. tirola were good but again ceased being made.
18. not done it for a few years but did a heap of it when windsor castle roof burned as all the beams for that had to be hewn converted as original, i'll have some pics somewhere. i got quite handy with an adse. i've also hewn stocks (long bits on windmill sails) out of solid before, but its easier to get them cut to size.
19. don't get a tdci we did and got rid in 14 months, theyre rubbish, go late td5 and if you need it chip/ ecu re map.
20. i''ve borrowed a trekka saw and it was ok but had its limits, mainly the bands breaking in the gullets, i've used a towed log logic twice and in comparrison to a mizer much better but the blades would be more, i'd also go for the stellite tip so more expensive, and the kit was more expensive than a mizer, £ for £ i would say mizer is better value but if you've the money then i'd have a log logic, if i had the timber and time i'd build a propper mill with a stenner band rack.....vb 54 or similar but not really portable....
21. theyre probably worth 40/ton where they are. the first pics are a bit boney last one isn't so bad... if i was nearer i'd have looked but not worth the transport hassle. plus just had another artic load of sticks delivered!!!
22. in short yes but band saw will also need sharpening. i tend to cut and bag all our flitch wood but use the rack to cross cut it or a chain saw ms390. works ok, get around 15 ton a year in oak, plus other bits. we've a large band saw 25" throat and takes a 2" band old sagar one that gets used as a resaw and will be quite happy chopping up stuff, usually the 15-20 ft flitch gets thirded and either fed through a cast bench with a 3foot blade tractor driven or the band/ chain saws.
23. the ida of hetas, is good similar to the old oftec for oil and corgi for gas... (i know theyre superceded now) the idea of them certing firewood is imny opinion good as theres lots of rubbish out there and folks selling un seasoned stuff straight to burn.... though some is the buyer going for cheapest.... or thinking thy can burn anything and get away with out tar buildup though i have had quite a lot of inconsistancy in dealing with them... when re lining chimneys.... it seems very arbitary and very much depends on who you get out or talk to. certainly not cheap to join and the referesher courses are expensive too... but a standard for moisture content and seasoning in my opinion is a good thing.... will folks pay the extra though?
