  1. Hi All, After a bit of advice! The head gasket went on my van a couple of months back, I got a local travelling mechanic to do the work and it cost me around £650 all in. Driving out of my local village today with a log store ive built for a client on the back and clatter bang the engine stopped. Walked home to get the hilux and towed it to my mates yard. Mechanic dropped by looked in the oil cap and said it looks like the timing chain cog has parted company from the cam shaft. Its my busiest week yet this week, over 10 loads going out and two custom made log stores to deliver. I am back to filling my £100 rascal van by hand... So question is how to play this with the mechanic? He is there this evening stripping the head down which is good of him, but is this his responsibilty or mine?
  2. During the winter months all my lads nappies went on our multifuel stove (for 2 years), rightly or wrongly my argument was id rather burn them myself than put them in land fill.
  3. I planted my Eucalyptus trees in May 2007 and they are doing very well, I feel that i could probably have planted them deeper than 2 foot though as the height they achieve in a short period of time is quite amazing! Thankfully i did at least put a 5 foot fence post in with them so i have been able to tie them up while the root system strengthed grew.
  4. Used her in anger today, but took it easy so as to bed in the new bits, its sounding nice and crisp! All was going well till i hit some hiddne barbed wire.. balls ... tonight i will be sharpening the new chain!
  5. Just want to say a big thank you to Spud for sorting out my ms390 for me as cost effectivley as possible under the circumstances and budget. I filled her up with oil and fuel and she started as she always used to on the 5th pull from cold. Also treated it to a new sprocket, bar and chain so the poor old thing doesnt know whats hit it, plus its clean! Spuds saved a saw that was most likely destined to fester in a box, plus he has saved me the extra £350 I would have had to spend on a replacement saw. Thanks again.
  6. Ive been contemplating a bale elevator too, the one i looked at was chain and sprocket with a couple of 3hp briggs and stratton engines. Both of which were knackered, old boy wanted £100 for the elevator which was in good nick other than the motors.
  7. Each tool has its job and that looks like it would be superb splitting rounds of Ash and Sycamore!
  8. http://arbtalk.co.uk/forum/chainsaws/35739-small-saw-advice.html I asked this question the other day...
  9. I borrowed a MS180 from my mates dad to do the CS30/31 and fell in love with it, as long as the chain was sharp and you didnt force it through it was superb! Simplicity its self to set up and maintain. By the end of the week it had felled at least 10 pretty big trees and earned my respect! lol
  10. I have found someone who can weld a new threaded connector on to a ram that was given to me, had previously discarded them from the project due to this hydraulic connector thread being so rusty it wouldnt seal. So with that fixed hopefully ill have two rams that i can utilise once the holes are drilled out to 25mm.
  11. Hi All, I am rebuilding a loader for my tractor, just about got it mounted but next hurdle is the knackered rams. Chrome is rusty in a good few places and the seals are shot. Does anyone know of any places who can recon the rams for me? Cheers
  12. I couldnt spend £400 on an echo, call me a badge snob ;-) As the log sales are REALLY kicking off i think i will be waiting and saving for a month and buying myself a spanky new saw. I will go to the dealers and look at the husky 346 and also back to the sthil dealer to fondle the 241. Cheers for the help and advice.
  13. Reminds me, look for "on any sunday" on you tube, its narrated by steve mcqueen. Proper 70s bikes and hair cuts.
  14. Just been looking at the husky range from the site you pointed me too, on paper they look a good option but i saw them at a local show and like you i got a cheap feeling from them.
  15. Ace! cheers for that so we are now between a £200 024 and a ms241 Thanks Rover, this is the sort of help i needed.
  16. OK cool, cheers Spud :-)
  17. Hi All, I am looking at buying a smaller saw and I am looking to get the benefit of everyones experience! Currently have a ms390 (spuds restoring it!) and an ms660. Spud has a 024 forsale at a very good price, probably in the £200 region, however, I have been to our local dealer yesterday and they have a new ms230c-be for £440 inc vat. The 230 seemed really light weight and user friendly, with some funky new features. So my concerns are the 024 is really pushing on in age now, if the bore/piston was so worn then i do have concerns about the big end. Basically am i going to be lucky to get a year out of the 024? The 230 is going to have a warrenty for a year and after that its down to me and how i look after it. I suppose its the age old new vs recon! Any views or thoughts would be ace!
  18. Your not worried they are sat in a puddle? ;-)
  19. Contact Spud! this sounds like the sort of job lot a man of his tallents should buy!
  20. Roger that
  21. Yep but you have to pay. Once your page is set up you can make an advert, its dead easy to do, first you need to assign a credit card to your facebook account, they automatically take payment weekly or every two days depending on how much money your spending. Then as part of the advert you get to choose your demographics or who your advert is seen by. I can select Isle of Man and my advert is only seen my manx residents, i can also choose over 20 years old and lots more. For other retailers its even better, if you sell tennis rackets then you can only advertise to those users who have tennis as a hobby! It really is a superb advertising tool. You can set an adervtising budget for the whole campaign of say $50 then you can set the amount your willing to pay for every person who clicks on your advert say $1 (its all in USD), but you dont really pay $1 per click there is some kind of auction in the code so if someone only said they will pay a max of 50cents then you win and the ad is displayed for a cost of 51 cents. Or you can set a maximum spend per day, say $20, then once your $20 is gone then the ad is not displayed.
  22. unless you are prepared to invest time and money in advertising in your facebook page then i do not believe the results are very impressive. However, if you are prepared to spend some money on advertising to your local market then you will soon seen the results! Basically unless an advert for your company appears on a potential clients screen then they will not know about you. I know also put "find us on facebook" on all my adverts. 23. I am all ready to go with local radio advertising and newspaper adverts but they are expensive and the weather is still too warm for me to see a decent return on the outlay i recon. So at present i have two 13yr olds out doing flyer drops in the posher areas and i am advertising heavily on facebook which is bringing in crazy results! The number of clicks and hits my website gets on a sat evening as a direct result from facebook is bonkers, people seem to be on line gossiping about strictly and xfactor but also willing to order in logs online! My very simple and basic word press ecommerce website is really working well. WindFall Logging Firewood and alternative eco fuels if your interested in having a look, it cost me £300 + the domain name which was £60.
  24. Might be interested in the 024 if the price is right? my 390 is sometimes too big for smaller jobs...
  25. I dont think there is a better way, its what we are all doing in one way or another. I have a log bagging tray that is great for logs and kindling, but its the same principle as your tube. I do also use a rectangular plastic tube from the inside of a rubbish bin for bagging 10inch logs which is exactly how your doing it. All i can suggest is that you raise the kindling off the gound, a large sloping table type thing, so the kindling feeds to you by gravity as you are putting it in nets. basically If you can make yourself more comfortable working and have the product right where you need it then this should increase your productivity.
