1. Personally I would avoid anything with thorns If Im maintaining it, unless you need to keep feral children and livestock out. Instead of following convention and planting staggered rows 6 plants per metre which is competetive for plants, why not plant 3 or 4 feet apart and include aronia, gojii berry, currants etc. Also for earlier years a few autumn fruiting raspberries and thornless tayberry, loganberry etc. In time these fillers will die out. Depends on how fruitful you want it. Yes you will need to leave it wider long term as many things flower/fruit on previous seasons new growth. Plants will need individual pruning, it will be difficult to have a cropping short back and sides uniform hedge.

3. To be fair to current business owner as James points out he has been good to him, but don't pay over the odds. Beats me why window cleaners buy and sell rounds, you are not guarenteed to keep custom. You don't say if any staff included in deal, best to have just yourself or you and one employee. I've seen chaps set up, overwhelmed with work take on more staff then all out on different jobs doing little as possible, long breaks etc. Boss chasing around after lads then not doing work themselves. Keep it small, turn away excess work keep reputation. Could you pay in installments over 3 years? You would be better off paying a bit more to ex owner than being messed on by banks. Whatever you do put it in writing in duplicate for both your sakes.
4. Flipping heck 30 days! In the last 2 years up to 3 months has been regular to me, Im no high income business either. As a self employed subbie just doing a day or two's labour often for some. It has only been a serious problem for the last 2 years because alot seem to be paying at the last chance which me being at the bottom of the chain delays my payday. I have been asked to wait to help their cashflow. In this situ its an employees world, they have to be paid. However if you are doing domestic work Really they should pay on the day or asap thereafter. Don't buy something you can't afford. Also taking commercial practices in to domestic, people trying to have it all their way.
5. Was tempted too start a new thread with this one. But unsure if its Silky or not, probably pre Karma days looking for work elsewhere in the desperate days. Cyclist Takes Revenge on Rude Driver - YouTube
6. I seem to remember about 20 odd years ago before treespades were popular that someone told me that a mature cedar had a hole drilled right through it, then a bar was inserted through hole and used to assist in a crane lifting it to its new location. I thought it was barmy at the time.
7. Machine mart do a range of pulleys, its near the engines in their catalogue.
8. Nails in trees:thumbdown: unless aluminium saws handle that no problem.. Someday somebody is going to ruin a chain or a tct circular blade. I know how I feel when that happens:cursing: With these sort of things they only tend to last around 7 years tops, likewise I'd make your fixings degradable as no one ever takes these things down. Maybe ait will fall whilst occupied but any roost or nest can. How abouts some old seatbelt webbing nailed into side of box, wrap around tree all the way round then half way again to reach the other side attach wide a diy buckle. Im sure a scrapyard aint going to sting you for nonmetal.
9. I just tried watching the program on iplayer, another silly set of presenters acting gormless. I skipped through and watched the last 8 minutes on the biomass. No wonder you asked questions Pat and started this. This thread is a mine of info by comparision. I havn't got patience for a lot of tv anymore, its dumbed down to the IQ of the lowest viewers, a bit like schools these days. The Jeremy Kyle club innit! Thats why many of us spend time on Arbtalk.
10. Irony, We was in Trinidad&Tobago about 18 months ago, they produce lots of oil in Trinidad so petrol is subsidised by the government????!!!!!! was 27p a litre in June 2011. They have a regular day length throughout the year lots of sunshine and wind but solar power is none existent, instead they burn gas because its cheap etc. Thats politics for you. Simples would be invest in solar and wind export more oil and gas. Its not just us thats living in the selfish moment.
11. Tough choice as ash may get disease or maybe not, Douglas may prove more profitable in long run to land owner. Take it you got your consultant rate right?
12. Box grows around 15cm a year, privet 60cm. Thereabouts, will be hard to equalize. e.

Agree with all comments above, sometimes if you put dodgy can in pocket or somewhere warm for a while they go ok for a bit. Paslode are great when on the go, but a time waster when not.
14. My mother is a sewer by trade, old school style. She does mine, probably invalidates warranty. I'd rather be protected than not.
15. Box will be outcompeted by privet as privet just mops the soil dry. I imagine your customer wants instant effect without waiting as usual. I think your options are.. 1. Replace hedge 2. Plant privet in between with a view to it taking over. 3. Cut box down to 15-30 cm depending on current height, even to the floor if its a low hedge. Mulch and feed with a more dedicated trimming routine. It should recover far quicker than a new hedge would grow as the roots are waiting to do the work. I think this is the best option , plant up big gaps with new plants, buy bigger pot grown ones, still cheaper than new hedge. Once the customer sees it growing they will be pleased.
16. Have you tried networking with other uk based treemovers, If anyone sells trees from mainland britain to ireland you would be a cost effective option.
17. Where are you based?
18. And Stan Meyer they reckon was murdered. This thread started as a "green do good " thread now plunged to a grisly level. Order your willow weave coffin to do your bit.
19. This weeks news idea. BBC News - Ireland to build 'giant' wind turbines to power UK homes
20. You can't it gets wiped clean and buried with the bodies.
21. Steve where I do holiday relief truck driving they have daft lads on shovel loaders making a mess, not doing constructive work. You should do holiday relief for them. I doubt any of em have tickets either! I cringe at their work. Then again arbwork is professional. They have acres to crash bang wallop in.
22. You doing a degree course thesis or something Pat? I have discussed this briefly with a waste consultant. What i remember 1. Yes within parameters 2. Predried 3. Price delivered is what counts, hence cross atlantic feasability 4. Nearly £100 last I knew but judging by the firewood prices of cordwood its increasing so they meet targets.
23. Coal holds more energy per volume so less truck/train/shipping volume. As for the earlier comment about doing maths, yes probably to achieve "Set targets" for financial gain. Not for true long term sustainable use.
24. Ah! I was looking for america not canada. Thanks
25.
Thanks, lightning response.
