  1. The latest project and reflective of the sort of work I often do, a crate of three Husqvarna 254XPs, two in poor condition, one looks salveagable and only one clutch cover! I have rebuilt and refurbed the recoil cover, pulled the recoil spring out of another and used on the better saw, new recoil rope and that was all good. Put some fuel in a the saw fires and revs - no bad noise. Have rebuilt the clutch cover but on removing the clutch, have noted that the central boss has a leg missing - will look at the other two and see if they are better. Should get a good working machine out of these saws.
  2. I guess it is possible if the chain is tight on the bar and you get enough heat to vapourise the petrol. I flush the tank with fuel and have run the saw up without a bar and chain on it to see if the fuel will be pulled through - worth a quick try - best done outside though. Other than this - strip it down but take it carefully, the oil pump is connected to a weak plastic extrusion that comes out of the plastic engine cradle - not a great design but works OK. It is possible the pump has a bit of wood chip plugging it - a common issue on all saws!
  3. 14" max, any more and the saw really isn't up to it! The saw works OK if the kerf (width of the cut made by the chain) is thin and the 1.1mm chain gives this hence the reason why Stihl fit it. If you cut a wider kerp, it takes more power and on an old 017, ya aint got much power to throw away. If you want the saw to cut faster, stick a 12" on it and take the depth gauges down a little otherwise, stick to a 14" and keep the chain sharp. You are unlikely to improve on this setup!
  4. My Advice - don't even think of it, the 017 isn't a powerhouse, the 1.3mm (0.050") gauge will sap it of all power and make it very boggy IMO. Stick to the 1.1mm (0.043") gauge and learn to keep it damn sharp - you can lower the raker/depth gauges if you think the saw has the power and your bar is a short one!
  5. Not tried one of these, you could ask the guys on Arboristsite.com as they will have greater knowledge of them. The Meteor kits, if built the same way as their pistons will be good. Other options, the 365 has a lot of squish built in, and they can be ported and muffler modded. I am sure the saw can be made to rev up to 14-14,400rpm and achieve a faster cut through decent tuning.
  6. It is possible to fix anything but the fuel tank on the saw fits directly behind the muffler and spark plug on this saw. Leakage may cause serious issues if the fuel leaks and ignites - may be time to get a new fuel tank or get a second hand one!
  7. The small metal grub screw is a breather screw and allows air to be pulled through the threaded part - it is normal and should be present as it stops a volume of fuel leaking if the saw is tipped. On the end under the cover behind the sprocket, there should be a foam pipe end filter held in place with a cable tie - this soacks up the little fuel that make it thorough the breather screw. The flat heat screw Wisewood mentioned shouldn't be there - I removed his as part of the service. If the pipe is removed, it should let a little air through if you suck on it, this is to allow air to replace the fuel pulled out of the fuel tank. Without this, you would get a vacuum in the fuel tank that would lead to fuel starvation. The throttle plate should open through circa 90 degrees, sounds like the cable isn't connected correctly!

    Husky 51 Rancher - open transfer port home owner saw, heavy, reliable and will last for 30 years. 15" is ideal, if you go to an 18", give Rob D a shout on this site and get a price on an 18" Oregon Micro Lite Pro narrow Kerf bar and a loop of 95VPX chain. The saw will have more success pulling this through big wood:thumbup:

  11. For those that don't know - Burrell is the Fanny Cradock of cake making - it is far better than his attemts at maintenenace and he likes wearing a frilly apron:blushing:
  12. Yeah Martin but I see no sign of my crankcase splitter on the list, may have to dig out the invoicing pad:lol: The cake was tops though:thumbup:
  13. Have you tried the tank vent - try running the saw and before it stops, loosen the fuel cap and see if it works fine. Other things to check - impulse line may have a small crack in it, as Barrie said - fuel line/filter condition - you can get leaks around the impulse line where the carb pushes in on some aftermarket impulse lines!

Those parts I mentioned are for a 372XPG that had three fins missing from one side and one from the other - I reckon it may have caused the big end to fail and also mushroom one inside face of the piston. If one fin is missing you can sometimes knock a fin off the other if the saw is of low value but that flywheel looks well past it - reckon something has come loose inside and busted it up - get it replaced!
  15. This is whats on my bench tonight.....I purchased a Jonsered 2165 off ebay - guy had "lent it out" and came back not running. Bit of an inspection later - crank bearings shagged, piston scored and missing a lump off the skirt, bore scored, clutch busted up:thumbdown: Bang goes the fix and sell route. Burrell had just purchased a 372 with a busted crank and the only saws to share the same parts are the 365 special and the Jonnie 2165 .....spent a couple of hours stripping the machine - the needed crank and flywheel are now out:thumbup:
  16. I pulled a coil off a McCulloch Virginia hedge trimmer once and used that on the Sovereign model - worked just fine:-)

  19. I don't believe so, I suggest you read my post again, I just gave a possible solution to the OPs problem and said I have seen a big up-turn of people wanting MS200Ts refurbed. I havent used the 201 but have stripped, repaired, ported, muffler modded and tuned MS200Ts - I can only pass judgement on the MS200T and not the 201 and believe that is what I did!

Yet another busy weekend, had an MS200T go wobbly after a repair on a badly fitted fuel tank - the clutch springs had failed, then the recoil pull went, got these fixed, the saw wouldn't idle, all over the place so did the acelerator pump fix, it was worn but still no joy. Soaked the carb in th eUS cleaner and bingo - back up and running sweetly. Tached up an 020T that will hopefully go out soon as interest has been shown. Tached up the ported 357XPG, the saw has heated handles - nice in this weather. Been stripping a Jonsered 2165 for the crank and flywheel as I know someone who wants them - many parts will fit the 372/365 so PM me if you are looking for anything. Burrell came round, sorted the muffler on his blower, tuned his MS200T and sorted the carb on his 046 - a long term headache! Oh - lastly, you may have heard of the wifes Christmas present - a Pie Maker - makes a damn lovely pie:thumbup:

Lacking torque in this area of the revs can be caused by a lean low speed mix - this may well be a design feature of the saw due to emission laws and the big downer on two strokes that the world and hius wife are going through at the mo. You could try turning the L screw anti clockwise by 1/5th turn and then speed the idle up on the normal idle speed adjustment screw to compensate for the slower revs caused by the richer mix. It may help but am the resident expert on MS200T/020T and have only had one MS201 on my bench - gotta say most Arbs are refurbing their MS200Ts in large amounts - must have had around 15 through in 6 weeks - junk to gold refurbs!
