  1. I am currently studying for a Degree in Arboriculture at Askham Bryan College, as part of the second year a Personal Research Project has to be completed, this survey will help me to complete the project I have started, so if you have a spare couple of minutes, your help would be very grateful The growing number of Pests and Diseases in the UK Survey
  2. yes, and the membership renewal is top of my christmas wish list this year!
  3. I was reading about QTRA for the first time today! i'm sure you would of read about it as its quite a big case, but the Mullinger & Others v The National Trust case study is very interesting, with David Lonsdale arguing QTRA is a accurate formula to inspect trees and Forbes- Laird arguing his THREAT inspection is better. https://docs.google.com/viewer?a=v&q=cache:Mcw3rBfHgv0J:www.qtra.co.uk/cms/index.php?action%3Ddownload%26id%3D205%26module%3Ddownloadmodule%26src%3D%2540random4ecbc721b3d91+2007+national+trust+V&hl=en&gl=uk&pid=bl&srcid=ADGEESjppDK88AiIqsCVjrpC4T6GXe_9_EcOpAGh6eZZuYNEP3I-kGVV5SYweMUbaoyepgTcu_h3MOsbqHBjYjH3pXQM3tS2mmHs-PuxuhgGtqgma8GCcgLgFQehoAYK7goNQWFCErxK&sig=AHIEtbSXfbXJTesdwLTVTr3s5BSlIlTh_A Got more info on it if you want it but its on my college computer!
  4. thought it was! just didn't recognise it as its sunny!
  5. I have been looking to get a card terminal for something not to do with tree surgery and found the costs to be quite high (merchant account set up + monthly fees + transaction% etc) but I wanted to accept payment which was not just paypal (not everyone has a account...) and then I found paypal terminal - its £20 a month and between 1.4%-3.5% per transaction, all you do is type the card details into paypal (100% secure) and takes about 1 min per transaction and then it either accepts or declines the transaction, and the money goes straight into your paypal account - best way of accepting card payment for all small business IMO. :-)
  6. Its one good app! if your looking for a book I would recommend manual of wood decays in trees, I also made these fungi ID flash cards a while ago, basic and not many fungi, but free! - http://arbtalk.co.uk/forum/training-education/31535-fungi-flash-cards-free-all.html Are you studying at Askham Bryan?
  7. Thank you both for your help, just got out my old arb magazines and going to have a good read through them, really appreciate your guidance. Cheers Ciaran Glyde
  8. Hi thank you for your reply, its 6000 words, so I can be quite in depth, my initial thoughts, just of today was now alot of the geotextyle systems have been in place for a while how are the trees that were planted with the system around it coping etc, but if you have a suggestion along those lines I would love to hear it. cheers ciaran glyde
  9. Hi all, Im now on the final year of my foundation degree and have been loving every minute of it! start of this year I was set the personal project (6000 words) where I could finally research anything I wanted to, over the summer I started to plan that I wanted to research whether or not one handed chainsaw use should be taught at colleges (found some interesting posts about it on here to!) After a few discussions with my lecturers they talked me against using this topic as a main part of the project is a literature review which I couldn't really do for the chosen topic. So today I have been racking through my brain and forestry journals etc looking for something else and i'm wanting to research about tree compaction and why if there are all these products that can prevent it e.g. geosynthetics, why do not all councils use this if in the long run it saves on replanting costs etc. I am just now struggling to think of a title so if I could please have your comments on my initial draft ideas that would be great! Tree compaction, if the problem has been solved with cell webbing why are they not being used nationwide? Cell web - dose it really work? Any thoughts or further ideas would be kindly appreciated. cheers Ciaran Glyde
  10. A friend sent me a link to it on facebook! I promise...

  12. Would recommend working for Tree Tech, based in christchurch, great bunch of guys, struggling to get down there as much. You will always be in work and will learn a lot as you work.
  13. Hi all, can you please help me with this leaf ID, its for a friend, I personally think from a brief look in my ID book its Ficus carica, but happy to be proved wrong! thanks in advanced. cheers ciaran glyde
  14. just a heads up that there is a good ebay "weekly deal" a petrol hedge trimmer for £60 delivered. I know that you can get cheaper hedge trimmers than that, however this one retails at £200 so it may be better quality! SANLI - HSS2660 SINGLE SIDED PETROL HEDGETRIMMER HEDGECUTTER 2 STROKE 25.4CC | eBay cheers ciaran glyde
  15. Dave's a great climber, tell him ciaran glyde says hi!
  16. is it just in the middle of a field? can you not just leave it be?
  17. I had a similar problem with the call centre... If you have a HMRC advice centre nearby I would recommend going to it, talking face to face is a lot easier in my opinion and if you have the letter and suitable ID you wont need to do the security questions, plus you can hand in your tax return at the same time and save on a stamp! cheers ciaran glyde
  18. never new there were so many northumberland based arbtalkers! a recreational climb must be organised this summer!
  19. I work for a tree surgeon who is working towards becoming a arb approved contractor in dorset, where the competition is fierce (even more so than up here.) So being a AAC IMO there will make you stand out from all the other rivals, and as there is more money down south the charge of the AAC assessment may only be a couple of days profit. Compared with up here where there is rivalry but most of it is on cost and IMO not quality, I could be wrong but the only AAC in the north east is Oliver's? which is quite a distance from you so you would defiantly stand out more, but I still think round here the job will go to the cheapest contractor, not the most professional looking. cheers ciaran glyde
  20. PM DR Green! he's based in durham and has a tipper and a chipper. hope this helps!
  21. 0.197, however one 0.5 took my average down a lot!
  22. you have just given blur 79p! had to download as I couldnt find the album, tune!
  23. yes, completely agree, its not professional however a lot of the public don't want to hire professionals, they hire the cheapest. cheers ciaran glyde
  24. IMO its quite a effective bit of advertising... well we have all recognised it, and i'm sure the public would notice that more than a professional looking tree surgery van. but thats just my opinion, I wouldn't choose to have my advertising like that mind! cheers ciaran glyde
  25. just wear a west brom shirt!
