  1. Hi- basically I have been using before I got a clinometer my Iphone to measure heights of trees by using trigonometry. and from a recent post a arb talk member was interested in a app dedicated to measuring tree heights. so ive been on the phone to a few app developers and submitted a rough idea to what I want, they have all quoted between 2-6k to make the app and then itunes takes 30%. so my idea was selling the app for £1.30 and making £1 per sale. this means im going to have to find atleast 4000 arborists with Iphone willing to pay for a app. so who would buy it? and no im not hoping for 4000 replys on here. also im wondering if anyone would be intrested in investing or sponsoring the app such as gusthards or jonsy's etc. all input would be appreciated. cheers ciaran glyde
  2. if you are good at trig you can download a spirit level app for free, and if your not bookmark this link on safari Trigonometry Calculator , this is what I used until I bought a clinometer as I got annoyed with the time it took me, If you borrow a friends clinometer and compare your finding with theres they should hopefully be pretty close, if not download a different spirit level app as some are better than others. defiantly room in the market for a clinometer app! hope this helps cheers ciaran glyde
  3. I started off my "tree career"<-- sorry dont know how else to word it! volunteering at cragside(one of the biggest national trust sites) I went round with the head forester doing piccus tests around the grounds and loved it, at the time I had very little knowledge but the head forester did all the work basically and I think what was meant by the article was that, (thats what I thought of it). basically all I did was tap in the nails and tap the hammer under his supervision and he would show me the results and ive never leant so much! cheers ciaran glyde
  4. wow!!!!! what a picture, my best picture like that is in Diagnosis of Ill-health in Trees, where its just a tree out growing its tree guard, but thats a amazing find!
  5. not a problem! thats my dislexia! thanks for your imput:001_tt2: cheers ciaran glyde
  6. thank you for the bid of confidance! hopefully I will be your known supplier you stick to in a couple of years time!:001_rolleyes: thank you for your imput. cheers ciaran glyde
  7. thank you for your imput, I think I know the supplier you are on about, I have bough a few things off them in the past, but by the looks of it they seem to specilise in domestic gardening products. I could be wrong, thanks for your help. cheers ciaran glyde
  8. 4% on each product I sell, then 3.5% paypal fees, then tax and soon vat!!! alot of fees! cheers ciaran glyde
  9. Hi thank you for your imput, fortunately that is not how fees work on ebay! basically domestic sellers pay 10% on any sale under £400, and say you sold a motor for 7K you would only pay about £200 which I personally think is a small amount for the exposure you get. basically for me as im a top rated seller and turn over a certain amount a month my fees are only 4% of turnover. dosent stop me paying them £250 a month though! cheers ciaran glyde
  10. hmmmm, thanks for your imput? basically If I do sell up my current business and sell arb gear I wont be one of the poeple selling "junk" I will be selling proper branded brand knew arb gear straight from the distributers. cheers ciaran glyde
  11. thank you very much for your imput, I will be selling products bought from the uk distributers, not the dodgey gear you still see. and I complety agree about the prices, I will have to have small proffit margins and pray on high selling figures! thanks for your imput. cheers ciaran glyde
  12. Yes completely agree on struggling competing on jonesys prices. and I had to google the micklegate run, and WOW!!!!!!! cant wait! cheers for your imput. cheers ciaran glyde
  13. thank you for your imput, out of intrest the ascender you bought, was it second hand, as all stuff Im anticipating in selling will be new. I know alot of people dont get on with paypal, but I know alot of people do. and its the last point which is really interesting, I think that alot of people use ebay for the ease of purchasing and paying, but as you have obvisly stated you dont! if I do sell up and move to arb you will get a significant discount on your first order! cheers ciaran glyde
  14. Thank you for your imput, I think I am going to contact the smaller distributers purely out of intrest now considering no one on arb talk wants a arb related ebay store! thanks for your imput. cheers ciaran glyde
  15. thank you for your imput, completely agree that the current ebay prices arent that cheap and completely agree about people going to shops so they can sort problems out. at present with my golf buissnes I tend to answer questions within 15 mins 8am-10pm and If i was to sell arboricultre equipment im going to target the small lower cost items, carabiners, pulleys, ropes etc. thanks for your imput. cheers ciaran glyde
  16. Im wanting to target brand new gear I reckon. cheers ciaran glyde
  17. completely agree matty, appreciate your imput, however from the amount of pepole on here people surely need to re-knew there carabiners etc and It looks like saw pods sell well etc. I really appreciate your imput. cheers ciaran glyde
  18. Hi all- basically im going to uni next month and currently own a successful golf retail business on ebay, and recently had a couple of offers to buy it out, which has got me thinking. Im getting a bit bored of selling the same old golf gear etc and want a knew challenge! so heres my questions! 1. do you at the moment look/buy climbing equipment on ebay- excluding chainsaws 2. if not why don't you? 3. do you buy climbing gear online at present? and heres a question for the retailers!?!- when selling golf gear I started out by buying clearance items from liquidated business or last years stock from golf shops then moved on to having accounts with the manufactures. so how hard do you think it would me to get a account with the manufactures? appreciate all imput. cheers ciaran glyde
  19. Ive said it before, and I will say it again, Tree tech is a great company to work for, really friendly staff, top notch equipment and high standard tree work. would totally recommend working for chris any day! cheers ciaran glyde
  20. firstly sorry for you loss. that sounds like a awful reason but thats insurance companys for you, might sound strange but have you thought of putting together a petition with other arb company owners basically stating that we would not be intrested in your insurance company if you refuse cases like that, I understand you probably shouldnt of left the door open but I dont think anyone would close and lock up if your away for a min. I may be way off but may be worth a try? cheers ciaran glyde
  21. yeah, when doing my tax return this may I was on there website for hours and wasnt much use, Im lucky as I live close ish to a hmrc centre and I would totally recommend popping in to talk face to face with a member of staff as from my experiance they are awful to contact via mail, email or telephone! cheers ciaran glyde
  22. completly agree! off to uni next year and sick of all my student mates complaining about the fees when they dont even know about when they start paying them back etc. hate to say it but the tories have done well on this one!<----- probably the only student who has said that! cheers ciaran glyde
