  1. Had another beech tree on the our avenue drop a bough. About 12" across at the failure point, approximately 50ft long with a very heavy mast and leaf cover. The stub will be left alone this time as there is nothing hanging up above.
  2. Large elephant Hawkmoth Caterpillar tonight on my Cotoneaster.
  3. Our work load has doubled due to the hot weather but only getting half as much done as we would like as the heat is draining us. On average we are drinking between 2-5 litres of water/squash dependant on what the job is. Its a blessing in some places when a colleague fires up the leaf blower to cool us down.
  4. 26.5C with no breeze. Got a couple of fans on full pelt in the lounge. Not doing alot other than moving hot air around.
  5. Yup early Saturday morning. Thunder n lightning has hit the mendips. Cousin just sent a pic on facebook lol. Gonna be a rumbly old night.
  6. Looks like a 3 way. 1 - Inonotus dryadeus 2 - Honey fungus bootlaces 3 - Combination of honey fungus, dryadeus and another feeding off the scraps. Tree doesnt look very old either.
  7. Got a storm brewing in the west, wind dropped and humidity rocketed. Large cloud base rolling in. Wouldnt be surprise if we get a rumble or two later. The CLA game fair weather looks to be a tad fierce this weekend. Glad we are taking the red beast.
  8. Our 63 plate 2.2 ranger has developed a worrying gearbox problem. We can get reverse without lifting the collar on the gear stick up. It has only just crept past 7,000 miles so is not even worn in. Its booked in on Friday to be looked at on Saturday morning apparently a "stick could be wedged between the box and the bodywork". Only time will tell if it is a warranty job or not.
  9. Ass end of nowhere, limited/no phone signal, a mile from the van up a narrow, rough bridleway and get a ruddy puncture. No spare and its tubed too with a 2 inch thorn poking out the sidewall. Beer is required hauling that lump up the hill. Both tyres will now have ruberised foam in the tyres to be 100% puncture free. Currently have the old tyres of our old beast with foam filled tyres.
  10. Not alot to report other than another site hay cut. This site is our flagship site. Despite the site being 15.58 acres (only about 12 hectares is grass) we get a very poor yield off the hay crop but it has been done late in the past two years until now. We usually only get about 15 bales of the entire site but due to the public usage we are not allowed to spread organic muck on it.
  11. A few shots of a Comma snapped the other evening.
  12. Large Yellow Underwing. Very common at this time of year. We disturbed atleast a dozen on one verge this morning.
  13. Old man and i are taking the landy up as will be having alot of camping gear to take as there is four of us going.
  14. What day ya going up? XCWeather - Forecast for Blenheim Palace
  15. Who's going up there this weekend? Old man and i are camping up there this year for definate.
  16. Not yet m8. Was doing alot of the harvesting when the light was fading. Made it good fun when ya found a new badger hole or two.
  17. Got 3 on the go. One New Holland CX 8080 and two New Holland CX 6090 on the go, 3 tractors per combine but 6 of the tractors are subbed in from a local firm complete with drivers. The combines are the estates. The rape has been ready for about 2 weeks now and in places was going flat on top of the hills so got them done first. We had a Jag harvester doing the organic stuff. I arrived just as they finished the "small field".
  18. Bring it on. Been hauling ass since 7 this morning. Just stopped for a BBQ supper then back on it. So far we have hauled about 700 acres of wheat and rape. Two fields were "collected whole" due to them being organic fields which had pigs on last year so lots of Wild Oat, Poppies, Orache and lots of Bindweed. Been using a New Holland T8. 390 all day. Had just been run in so could her some beans with a full load of grain up the many hills of Crichel Estate.
  19. Who spotted the caterpillar in the Marbled White pictures?
  20. The pics ive taken today. Just the usual suspects Marbled Whites Small Skippers Large Skippers Meadow Browns and a Six-spot Burnet Moth
  21. Could possibly be a Midland Hawthorn? Leaves look big for nativeCrataegus monogyna could be camera angle though.
  22. I will be Stephen. Managed to make 8 benches with the timber easily accessible. They will be fit for purpose tomorrow. They are only made to provide a dry seat so people dont end up with wet backsides on the grass. As the pitches hadn't been mown for a month i said to the guys today about mowing and line marking them today ready for tomorrow. They weren't keen until i said a pint would be bought for them at the end of the day lol.
  23. We are running an FS480 with a 4 line Autocut head. It has red 2.8mm cord in it for a week and now has our 3mm yellow round. We are keeping tabs on how many "bops" we are doing a day in comparison to the standard two line with the same cord. This week we had 48 bops of the 2 line and 20 on the 4 line. We can run the 4 line into much heavier growth as well too.
  24. Grazon 90 if you want to keep the grass, Glyphosate 360 to kill all in a couple of hits. Timbrel if you want to kill all in one hit. Timbrel you need to wear a full face shield as its potent stuff.
  25. Got a second memorial tournament in memory of my close friend. This year i have decided to make signs up for people to find their way within half a mile of the site. We are having it in his home town as last year was a PITA with parking. I am also making benches for the event (12 or so). Very basic but will be donating them to the football club he played for. People have asked if i would like a donation but as i am not paying for the timber (recycling old timber stiles/etc) i don't think it is right as i am doing in my own time.
