  3. Well said. All we do every month is put higher octane petrol through our machines and on the two stroke machines use Stihl HP Super. Yes i know the higher octane petrol is more expensive than the normal stuff. But we dont pay £20+ for 5 litres.

  12. This mornings sighting. All the people with expensive cameras were in the wrong spot. It was just me and my little digital camera.
  13. Todays job. Install a new sleeper bridge as old one was very rotten and needed to be brought up to spec. Not a bad hour and halfs work just very very cold as wind was whistling through.
  14. I have thought about doing a blog just havent got round to doing it yet. Stile repairs/replacements, bridge repairs/replacements and sleeper bridge repairs/replacements are free to the landowner as is the way marking. If gates need to be installed then we ask the landowner to either cover the cost of the installment or the cost of the gates. If there is a bridleway or footpath which goes across a farmers land (i.e between two hedgerows) and the landowner doesnt keep it clear to the minimum width then generally we go and do the work quickly. But if the farmer is asked to do it numerous times as it is on his/hger land then we do the work but charge them the hourly rate and depending how long the job takes and how many people are there on the job depends on how much we charge.
  15. We've got a HS75 which we use for the really meaty stuff. We have put it through 2 inch stuff in the past. It takes a bit of wiggling but it goes through it in the end. It is 14 years old and has been abused a little bit.
  16. Got an FS480 with a worn fuel tank. Has anyone heard of a tank guard wearing through a fuel tank to the point of leaking?
  17. Cut down a Sycamore which was coming into leaf earlier. It was in a suntrap tho but the sap was like a fountain out of the stump.
  18. Had one of the tree teams stolen end of last month. Gas axed their way through the palisade fence, cut the padlock then drove off with a Jensen A540. We have CCTV of them doing it and reg numbers and faces but local police said it is difficult to prove the theives were there and they were the ones who stole the chipper
  19. We had HSE called out 4 times last winter. Once for not having appropriate signage for winching operations (we did, we had signs and banksmen by signs and hi-viz jackets tied to the tirfor cable), Twice for using a 4x4 in an "inappropriate manner" (hauling lengths of timber to a level surface so it is safer and easier to cut), and the best one of all "Burning tyres to get a fire going" (We already had a fire going 2 hours before the call came in, it was a farming contractor on top of the hill being "helpful" by burning old silage clamp tyres). The HSE officers which came out apologised for our down time which we usually replied "not a problem your only doing your job".
  20. Bit like nesting season from 1st March to 31st August. It is only a guide.
  21. Saw pigeon squabs this morning in trees, got the odd bluebell in flower but it is just a flower.Celandines are out in flower, Woke up early to listen to the dawn chorus of all the song birds. The robins and wrens were the noisiest by far and they were all set up by their boxes for the year.
  22. Usually early morning or late evening is the best time to find them but the pics ive been getting are from 9.30am to 2pm. Ours ones have got used to people and dogs and arent scared of coming up close.
  23. Time to restart this thread for 2013. I only took my camera with me down the river just incase i was anything interesting. Was a fantastic sight seeing them again. It was the same 3 as last year.
  24. Had a bad start to the morning as the BCS decided it didnt like the flail head and woulldnt engage, but at the same time it didnt move under its own power if the PTO was engaged. Spent the afternoon cutting and chipping on a town centre site. Got a fair bit done, back there on monday afternoon to knock out a large torn willow limb.
  25. We are getting about 250 miles out of a 60 litre tank. About 20-35 mpg depending on what we are doing or towing.
