  1. We have alot of them especially if there is long unmanaged grass with Knapweed near by. I counted 20 on one Black Knapweed plant a few weeks back.
  2. Yup. I love the work i am in. The main reason i have been volunteering for 5 years is because there is nothing going anywhere job wise. Only volunteering posts and very short seasonal contract posts.
  3. I've been volunteering full time for 5 years. Alot of people think i'm mad.
  4. Our local Environment Agency wanted to remove a sycamore which was across the river. We got them to cut it off at the base and anchor it to a massive clump of Salix cuprea to create another spot for them to feed and potentially breed. They agreed so now got a 8 ton Sycamore complete with branches on the bank anchored with a 10 ton breaking strain chain and D shackle. When i get an oportunity i shall get some pictures but it is very overgrown with brambles so will be unlikey for me to get pics.
  5. Heard this the other day on Radio 1. Watch a tune [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HLUX0y4EptA]‪Flobots - Handlebars‬‏ - YouTube[/ame] [ame] [/ame] [ame] [/ame]
  6. We put tins down to see what reptiles we get on the site. We had reports of all 6 species of reptile but only got 4 (Grass Snake, Slow Worm, Adder and Common Lizard). We saw the Adder last month but none of us were wearing gauntlets so didnt want to pick it up.
  7. Six-spot Burnet moth on Ragwort. And spot the Slow Worm.
  8. Our jobs today 1) Install 3 new anti-vehicle stobs 2) Move finger post and attach to bridge 3) Site checks.
  9. I'm gonna say that will weigh more like 10 ton with all that soil. The roots and stump on their own would weigh about 2 ton.
  10. Got back from camping yesterday afternoon and went for celebratory drinks at one of the many locals. The campsite we stayed at had its loos vandalised when we arrived but other than that it was a cracking site. My tent is the the one on the left. The lad with the beard is the man who has just walked the 630 mile South West Coast Path. He did it 7 weeks.
  11. Cheers.
  12. My boss is using the pictures in a powerpoint to show the local community groups that our management methods work. We have a local group which are trying to take over the ownership and management of the site. They want to plant more trees on the meadows, fence off large chunks for year round grazing and the bench/fence repairs done using the timber off the sites. We don't have enough big trees to do year round repairs on the picnic benches or the fencing.

    Otters

On one of the site i manage on Monday i saw some Otters. We had 3 adults and atleast 2 kits that we could see running along the bank. Glad i had my compact with me as got some good shots. They have a holt along the riverbank where i purposefully felled a splitting crack willow along the edge of the river. The willow is still growing and there is loads of shelter and hiding places along the stretch for the young otters to feed.
  14. Alot of those trees are infected with Kretz and about 20 had Dryad's Saddle growing from old cuts. They (national Trust) generally only fell 2 or 3 a year the rest are just tickled up here and there.
  15. We ran a 24 inch on our 440. Only used it a few times for felling bigger trees then swapped to the 20 inch for snedding the logs up.
  16. LOL. Was waiting for a comment like that. Most of the trauma kit that he has is in the ArbAid kit. Unfortunately he cant order loads of stuff in and disperse it at will. He has had to go to incidents involving tree surgeons from anything from a broken wrist to a laceration on the upper thigh.
  17. Just spotted a crack in the stump going from left to right too
  18. I'm gonna say Kretzchmaria deusta. Large fire scar n lots of open wood for it to feast off.
  19. Forgot to mention i used a syringe full of bbq lighter fluid and flushed the pipe back into the reservoir. the amount of crud that came out of the pump was scary.
  20. Pretty much ye. There is a household waste station about 1/2 mile away from the house but we think it may have been the landscapers doing it as the bushes still have root balls attached. Hence why we are hiring a shredder rather than a chipper. There is all of the off cuts thrown over and the old decking complete with bolts and screws over the fence too. I'm thinking they were using a mini digger with a grab to launch the stuff over as some of the stuff was massive.
  21. Two identical threads by the looks of it but this is the bigger one with the majority of the pics.
  22. Stripped both strimmers right down yesterday and found why there was spooge around the exhaust. Both exhaust gaskets had completely gone. Got two new ones and steam cleaned both strimmers. Will check for anymore spooge leakage over the next few weeks.
  23. Going to put some 3 week old grass clippings through as well as all of the veg peelings that have been launched over:thumbup:
  24. In a few weeks we are going down there with a tracked shredder and will be chipping the lot in a massive heap at the back of the property. going to start at 8.30 and finish at 5.30
  25. Hi m8. sorry i did respond to ya in chat i had to tow my mum back home as her car overheated
