I've seen merip on 3 old oaks this year, two of them had died in the last 2-3 years after heavy reductions. No Griffola about though...

Ditto that. I tend to specify braced heras type fencing on smaller/residential sites. Can be used with heavy feet on braces or plates with ground pins. Alongside large vehicle accesses simple scaffolding driven into the ground makes a good sturdy frame to attach heras fencing to. Weldmesh is expensive and not particularly reusable, whereas heras can be hired from any hire shop

Most likely I. hispidus, at least in the south east, it's rare to see a mature ash without it. Causes a hollowing in the stem/branches, which woodpeckers just adore. Rarely causes a problem, more so at over extended branch bases or the crown break. If every ash with hispidus was felled it would be mass extermination of yhe species!

Most certainly requesting '12, the LPAs round here are quite clued up. Which is nice for the trees as they won't accept bull poo reasoning, and are more often asking for arb site monitoring which is better than strict TPPs which are ignored without question...

100mm from the base of the tree would be shocking! Regarding the 20% offset, I think that went out the window with 5837:2005. Adjustments to the rpa must be based on judgement of the surrounding soil conditions. If it is 100mm from the base kerbs could 'bridge' over the roots. I'd be questioning the road surface, if the kerb is that close the road must surely be well in the rpa?

Thanks David for the contact details of Martyn Ainsworth. He put me on to a Mr Boniface who records finds in Essex, and I have been asked to write an article on the find/fungi for inclusion in the Essex Field Club Newsletter.
